Auburn HC Gus Malzahn said Harold Joiner has been playing "more slot receiver than H-back," along with his role at running back.

At the quarterback position Malik Willis, Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix all rotated in with the first offense during team drills with Nix getting the first reps today. Gatewood continues to look decisive in the passing game and has the ability to make plays with his legs.

Redshirt sophomore Alec Jackson rotated some with the second offense at left tackle on Saturday and looks like the move is a good one early on. He's got good feet and the strength to hold his ground against the pass rush.

As for the offensive line as a whole Malzahn said the group looks completely different than it did last year in fall camp. He said they're not making mistakes and are playing well early in the spring.

A player that continues to impress is sophomore linebacker Zakoby McClain. Working with the first team along with Kenny Britt at times on Saturday, the young linebacker has put himself in a position to help the Auburn defense.

Running back D.J. Williams has impressed early on with his ability to make plays and also hold onto the football.

From Rivals:

It was a quiet first season for Harold Joiner, playing in two games and rushing three times for nine yards and a touchdown against Alabama State. But the redshirt freshman is ready to make some noise at Auburn in year two. And is sounds like Gus Malzahn is ready to give him the opportunity.

“You know, Harold's got a great attitude and a great approach,” said Malzahn, Auburn’s seventh-year head coach. “We're asking a lot of him. He's kind of playing two positions. You know, him and Sal are the only two that we're asking to play two positions. “Harold's really shown some signs of some really good stuff. He can really run, he's a really good athlete, and he competes. As long as he'll keep working, there's no doubt in my mind he'll help our offense next year.”

Joiner has the potential to be a big part of Auburn's offense this fall. Joiner is playing both running back and slot receiver. His versatility is exactly what Malzahn wants to add to the offense this year to cut down on substitutions and increase tempo. “Harold Joiner is going to be special. Harold is going to be real big. He’s going to help us out a lot on offense,” senior running back Kam Martin said. “It’s going to help us a lot because you’re going to have two running backs on the field at the same time. I feel like that’s going to help us out a lot too so we don’t have to keep rotating guys in and out.”

Joiner is even drawing comparisons to former Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson, who was the SEC Player of the Year in 2017 and accounted for 854 yards and four touchdowns rushing and receiving as a rookie for the Detroit Lions last season. “He’s the type that can do a lot of different things — he runs the ball well, catches the ball well, so, he is a running back, but we’re going to utilize him in some different ways,” Malzahn explained. “Kerryon Johnson, when he was a true freshman, we utilized him some different ways, so that’s probably the best way to put that.”

The one limiting factor for Joiner might be his physicality. But Martin seemed more than confident in his young understudy when asked about Joiner’s blocking ability. “He’s going to be good. Harold is going to be real good,” Martin said. Auburn, which wrapped up its first week of spring drills Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium, will return to the practice field Monday afternoon. The A-Day game will be April 13 at 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

Need an update on the haters. It’s seemed like all rainbows and sunshine on Gatewood since the Purdue game. Do we have holdouts?

Just check the threads:

Gatewood can't pass, couldn't even be a full time starter in high school, move him to TE, etc.

Hadn’t seen any of that since the bowl game but leave it to our board to write players off they haven’t seen much of

Being a basketball school and all, it would be great if our grit and run this year rubs off on our other minor teams and coaches(sans Equestrian - great job as always!).

From the viewing window of Auburn football's 6th spring practice: - Joey Gatewood was 1st-team QB in the pace drill, Bo Nix was 2nd team. Both QBs rotated with 1st-2nd RBs in zone-read and protection drills. - Nick Coe was at 2nd-team DE some, T.D. Moultry was 1st-team Buck.

Watched some of bo’s highlights yesterday. Does he possess REAL speed? If he is faster than gatewood, gonna be a serious battle

I feel confident he is not faster that Joey, but he is mobile enough and has good instincts on the run. Way better than Stidham.

Are they going to eventually move him to LB?

I hate this time of year. It's when emotion starts to over ride logic, and then I'm sad in the fall.

But, frick it. 15-0 ship.
