I appreciate the time you and the others have put into the recruiting threads over the past few years.

It’s getting too chummy in here. Jones, you suck and am glad you’re quitting.

A lot of 2022 offers are going out this week. I’m not going to list those out as they tend to be mostly meaningless. One thing to track, however, is the offense offers to Texas versus Georgia.

Speaking of Texas, Auburn appears to be out for 4* RB LJ Johnson. At this time, I do not believe Auburn will pursue another top tier RB unless it falls into their lap or they happen to be a late riser. Keeping Goodwin is a priority and I think we’ll see them grab someone on signing day or just stick with Goodwin this cycle.

1 Fr (Tank)
1 RsFR (MAR)
2 SO (Williams, Joiner)
1 JR Shivers

These guys should all stick around for 2021.

NTY, but on the OL and Gooch. Great name by the way. I was told that Bicknell likes the guys he has on the roster and currently has committed and he gave up an allocated scholarship to be used elsewhere. Gooch is huge, like that kid from Wisky from a few years back but he's not particularly athletic or aggressive. No idea of the validity of this speculation, but I can say with my own untrained eye Gooch is fairly meh in his highlights other than him being double the size of everyone on the field. Regardless its obvious that Bicknell likes big frames.

Remember when Tricketts liked big tubs of goo at MSU, AU and FSU? Hopefully this is not similar.

I’d say Johnson and Langlo are athletic. They’re the kind of OL that’s going to need to eat 5000 calories a day to make weight. Roberts is another story. He’s just a mammoth individual all around

Like I said before, not concerned about losing the talent Gooch brings to the table. More of a depth concern considering how things have gone the past few years.

I agree Jones. Gooch is one of those kids that can maybe be on the FG unit. Or possibly provide depth as a junior or senior but as top 10ish recruiting team our goals should be much higher. No need in spending time using scholly's on kids like that you can find them everywhere and we have an entire 2nd and 3rd team full of players just like him on the OL. Still hoping Mims takes a look at the rosters of each team and sees we need high school OT's in a serious way.

You dont find players that size just anywhere. We have had enough of Gus just finding bodies when he actually decides to recruit OL. That how we ended up with Kaleb Kim and needed OL transfer the last few years

Actually we haven't even done that. Arguably the biggest problem in previous classes was not taking enough guys on the OL.

Incorrect. He committed to AU in April before his SR year. Staff's don't reach or take fliers on recruits that early in a cycle. Our staff thought he was a real talent. Obviously it was an evaluation miss.

Again that has more to do with not taking enough OL i each class in most of the classes in Gus's tenure.

Kim was a 4 star recruit. Just wasn't and never developed into a strong kid. Some guys just aren't strong no matter how much training they do. It's a genetic thing. He had the athleticism but never had to the strength to play inside.

I couldn't agree more. He was an early take for alot of programs but just never developed physically and wasn't crafty enough as a C to overcome it on the OL. We had multipe SEC teams scheme against Kim. Without Brahms broken leg we're not talking about this issue.

Our OL recruiting defies logic. You'll go crazy before you figure out what the issue is. We can recruit inside guys with no issues, but we haven't really got the production out of them. We struggle recruiting OTs, but have had guys drafted in the first round. You would think our OT recruiting would be good and out OG/C would struggle.

jt33 I said the same thing on this thread just a couple days ago. Makes zero sense other then we have had what 3-4 OL coaches over Gus' tenure. That's all I can guess. Hopefully coach Bicknell falls in love with AU and wants to stay until the end of Gus' run. We need 4 years of coach Bicknell at least.

I know hence

I was saying when he took OL they were really not good players. He is a poor evaluator of OL talents. Gus cant scout, its that simple.

Well, it doesn’t help when NFL people come out and say Gus’ offense is trash for developing OL.

Gus has the right idea on OL scouting. Especially OTs. The downfall is that our scheme is simple and that works against us in recruiting. It’s why a guy like Tega can come in and be pretty dominant despite no OL experience. It’s also why we’re a great transfer destination.

Works against us on the high school level, though. Some of it is bullshite but there’s a common fear among NFL teams that Auburn OL need a lot of work getting up to speed on NFL playbooks. Hopefully Tega and Driscoll help change that. Bicknell may help too since he’s got an NFL background

It's not the blocking schemes it's the run/pass ratio that the NFL doesn't like for our linemen.

We have been to predictable on passing downs putting the OL in bad situations when a blitz could come or not. Plus down and distance plays a big factor into how long you have to hold your block. In the end it isn't scheme it's not enough opportunities. When we have a lead we just run and run and run. Not even the backups get to operate the entire offense up 41-10 with 8 minutes to go.

In fact I would say Gus' offense is one of the most difficult for OL. As generic as the route tree is the OL for the most part is very diverse and mixed with multiple blocking schemes just never get to throw it 30+ times a game unless we just can't stop the other offense.

Just going with what NFL guys say.
Braden Smith cited the run-heavy attack as being a minus but he also said it was just generally simple.

Which goes back to my point. It’s just a simple position to play in Gus’s offense. The little experience Gus requires during recruitment kinda lays that clear. Two point stances, plays on boards, everything decided from the moment you’re set to the end of the play. Some years we see a little more but it’s basic as it get most snaps.

Auburn rarely huddles. Offensive linemen operate mostly out of a two-point stance. Play calls are a picture on a board, rather than a long list of words, and Auburn rarely makes checks or audibles at the line of scrimmage, a staple of NFL offensive line play.

quote:

“It’s two different styles,” Smith said. “At Auburn, all we did was run the ball. It’s a pretty simple offense. It’s not too complex, which is the point of it, so we could go fast.”

quote:

Indianapolis believed Smith’s spread-offense background would not limit him as it has limited Robinson and Coleman. When the Colts finished evaluating Smith, the team felt confident that his skills were not “scheme-dependent,” according to director of college scouting Morocco Brown.

The article isn’t totally accurate. Tempo isn’t as big of a part of Gus’s offense nowadays as it used to be. Defenses typically are able to adjust and sub most snaps. The article also makes an important note that this is a broader issue that’s not necessarily unique to Auburn. And whether it’s all true and fair or not — it’s the perception. It’s been a while since Auburn linemen stuck in the league for a bit despite having guys drafted here and there.
