How did we manage to get Pat Dye in 1980? What has changed since then that we can't attract an up-and-comer?

Don't let any donors help decide who to hire. I think that would fix the problem. Maybe have an independent group research metrics such as assistant hire strength, player development, win percentage, liability, etc. They present 3-5 candidates based on their scores and the AD chooses. I think they've been choosing coaches based on feelings or prior connections and not actually productivity.

I won't even pretend to know. But I think it's pretty obvious from our last few hires that we can't exactly pull an A-lister. Tubs was the last solid hire we had, imo. I was not mad with the Freeze hire because I knew it could have been much worse. He wasn't my choice but it was so much better than many other names I was hearing. I think that Freeze has to be given next year. At the very least, I think he'd leave the program in much better shape (talent wise) than it was when he got here.

Auburn is 0-16 in games against ranked opponents…. which pre-dates the arrival of Freeze.

The root cause is a lack of talent in the starters and depth. And you can thank Malzahn/Harsin for that

I honestly don’t remember a single person saying he was a slam dunk hire. I think most were mildly disappointed, but willing to give him a chance.

There were a few, I don't dig for receipts, but maybe greygoose and beachbum?

Most of the anti-freeze fans had a moral issue than anything.

I wasn't a fan of his morals, but could get past it. Mainly, I thought he was a dumbass for that whole scandal.

I mostly thought Freeze was an 8-3 type coach at best.

I would also venture to say lack of fundamentals as well. They don't look like a well coached team. Poor blocking, tackling, loafing on routes, etc. That may tie into talent some but there's a lot less talented teams doing better than auburn right now.

He ain’t getting fired this season so I don’t see a reason to discuss this yet. If he keeps this class together he has to put together proof of concept next year.

This team is better than the record and with PT at the helm.

I agree. I think we legit should go 7-5 this year with this team. Now, that could still happen, but I think 4-8 or 5-7 is where we end up. I think we could possibly beat one we are not supposed to in the last 5, but the problem is, teams not supposed to beat looks very different from what you would have said they were prior to the season,

I agree with you that this team is better with PT at the helm …. but no objective observer would believe this team is “better than the record”

4-8 best case … and let’s hope CHF closes this strong recruiting class … because we sure as hell need it

Caddillac, I think we have two extra wins if only our FG kicker would do his damn job.

With that said, games are not won or lost by one play, but our 14 point leads being given up when 17 mightve been fine is starting to irk. At least get the field goal. Why in the world did we have to such a lousy kicker while everything else is a trainwreck. We have been kickerU since at least Damon Duval FCOL

Ole Miss was 2-10 the year prior to Freeze being hired. He gave them one of their few 10 wins seasons in their entire football history 4 years later.

Apparently we are not allowed to talk about that part of Hugh's Ole Miss days. If we were, we wouldnt have to compare his recruiting here to Jimbo, an irrelevant coach considering Hugh recruited well in Ole Miss, finishing number 6 in recruiting one year, and then going to the Sugar Bowl later on.

Talking about Hughey’s Ole Miss days are just as relevant as talking about Gus’ 2013 season.

But carry on if you may…

Hugh's recruiting and eventual on field success at Ole Miss as compared to Hugh's recruiting here is more relevant than irrelevant Jimbo.

Jimbo is relevant to you only because there was that guy, that one time. That's it.

I don’t remember ever mentioning Jimbo

But carry on…
