Have we discussed Steele's 3-3-5 defense?

Seemed like a good plan given our lack of DL players, but overall it did not work effectively. We were gashed in the run game especially by the QB run. It might work better coming up against Leach and co in a few weeks.

It worked well last year against LSU but we also had a monstrous DL and played a team that didn’t run the ball well. OM was still committed to getting yards on the ground, especially with QB. I suspect we will see the same defense against MSU and make him throw into smaller windows.

kinda seemed like the gameplan was to let them hit us with the run even if they were successful, just so they wouldn't play us like Bama and hit 50 yard bombs every other play

held Moore to 5/16 and Corral to 60% (was 75% vs Bama), and 28 is their lowest scoring output of the season

It was a 3-2-6. I only saw it on the first 2 drives. They had 1 yard on the first drive and went down the field running it up the middle on the second, until they got to the 6 or 7 and the middle run was stopped twice in a row, then Corrall through the pick.

To start the game it was:
DL: Bryant, Newkirk, Wooden
LB: Pappoe, McClain
DB: Truitt, Monday, Peters, Pritchett, McCreary, Sherwood.

After that they went in to a 4-2-5, with one or both ends playing in the up stance.

Unless you just out talent everyone on defense now you have to be as multiple on D as you are on O

I was starting to get annoyed with how easily they were running it on us in the second half l, but as others have said I think it was definitely our game plan to make them beat us on the ground because if anything that at least slows the game down some. Clearly after Coral threw 6 int’s the week before and that one in the end zone early, Kiffen appeared content with running every play we were in that formation. It did become an issue, towards the end of the game especially, where they would could go fast without substituting and it felt like we could do anything to stop it. I believe we had to call a timeout just get a fourth lineman out there and mix it up.

I am interested to see if we use any of this game plan next week against LSU. Not quite as dynamic as last year, but they are running a lot of the same offense and it is very much pass first. Would much rather slow them down, not let Finley get in rhythm, and try to take Marshall out of the game.

not saying they did it the entire time but I’m rewatching the 4Q right now and we’ve been in 3-2 a whole lot

I personally do not like us running the 3 man front. We dont have the skill up front to run it. It gets gashed and our linebackers do not fill those holes fast enough

Stick to a 4 man front.

Yep, you are right. I rewatched their last scoring drive and it was 3-2 until a stop in play around the red zone then 4-2.

Looks like Justin Ferg has an article/film room about it on his new platform The Auburn Observer. I haven’t subscribed so I don’t know what is says but from seeing his stuff before he probably has a breakdown on it.

I think Steele will run it a high % of the time the rest of the year because we're not generating a pass rush. If you can't pressure the QB with four, you may as well drop another back in coverage. Only my opinion of course, but Steele has been multiple his entire career, from Okieand Bear fronts to the 3-4. He's like our own Dom Capers.
