That picture reminds me of Butch Jones at UTk and the brick by brick.

It's basically Gus's 2013 offense with some updates. Back in 2013 people called it a spread option. Today they have come up with "veer and shoot" and "wide choice" as the names you will hear.
If you will recall, Gus ran the ball a ton, even though it was still sort of a "spread" offense. Heupel and Golesh do the same thing. Lots of zone runs with blocking H-backs and what not. It's like the old veer offenses from the 70's but with more wideouts.
As Gus used to say "We are a run first, play-action passing team." That's what veer and shoot is. Most of the throws are off play-action fakes. Not a lot of true "drop back and read" types of throws. (That's the one "ding" some people have with it. It is not good for prepping guys for NFL where you have to learn progressions).
"Wide choice" comes from the fact that the receivers run their "choice" of routes based on how the defense lines up. I am not sure if Gus did this back in 2013 (he might have, I don't know), but I know Freeze incorporated it at AU.

So does he evolve and adjust to the players ability especially the QB unlike Gus? Seems once the defense coordinators figured out Gus he went into a shell.

Does he utilize a modern passing attack? i.e. use the middle of the field, use athletic, competent Tight Ends? that right there would separate him from Gus enough for me.

From Wikipedia on Golesh: "In the season before Golesh came to Ames, Iowa State tight ends caught a combined five passes. In 2019, Cyclone tight ends caught 75 passes under his direction and played a pivotal role in the team's success. Golesh mentored all-conference performers at tight end in 2017, 2018 and 2019, as the Cyclones recorded a pair of 8–5 seasons and back-to-back bowl berths in 2017 and 2018."

Good question. Flexibility is crucial. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Positions must not have NFL limitations.
My liking of the hire assumes an exact copy of the UT offense can get us back to 8-4, 7-5 with no huge drop offs year over year (also assume DJ like defense).
Hopefully he is smart enough to make adaptions and vary tempo in order to go to the next level.

Did you watch his presser today? He was pretty cool and edgy

I have not yet. I’m cautiously optimistic. He appears like he’s short in stature, so hopefully he’s an overachiever with little man syndrome like wee man Saban.

Drawback: Low time of possession: The rapid pace can result in the defense spending more time on the field, as seen by the low average time of possession for USF.
Hope we can keep Durkin, his D's are well practiced at spending a lot of time on the field. The announcers said a few times over the season that he played 30 player to keep everyone on the D fresh and give them a chance to prove themselves. Given Freeze's offense stuck in neutral, that's was a lot of practice.

Looked to me like Gus got fat and lazy on the O-line and other components of the team. Getting all of the money ever needed can have an effect on a coach.
