Bryan Harsin on SI.com

Pretty neat inside the whole move of Coach Harsin and the why and how. They talk about his frustration with not getting selected as a 12-1 team, and I feel like we as a system, should have a better way to include group of 5 schools. I mean a 16 team playoff wouldn't be too much extra, the lower divisions have been doing it for years. Why can't we have December madness with cindarella schools like in basketball?

good article, I have said all along the playoffs should be 8 with all P5 champs getting an automatic berth, the top G5 school, and then the next 2 highest rank no matter what their conference is. This way it matters if you when your conference and also there is always a G5 school. Then to keep the committee from putting G5 vs #1 each year seeding should be by random draw.

Thatd be awful. Just keep it 4, we see the two best teams play. No reason to throw a shitty pac 12 team in there

No thanks to a 16 team playoff.

The article itself is well written. Ross Dellenger used to cover LSU.

Has the best team in the country not won every year since the playoffs began? Don’t dilute the regular season.

I took that Harsin was an alpha coming from a strong lineage of coaches from that article. Who wants to talk about boring playoff debates? At Boise and 12-1 simply isn’t good enough.

No.

bama won without winning the Division. The regular season has to mean something.

It's the same beauty contest it has always been. There are just fewer voters now.

I hate this attitude. Every other collegiate sport has a playoff. All of them. D1 college football is the only one that doesn’t. It’s designed to reward a select number of teams.

It would make it a little more exciting as you would have teams fighting for those 2 at large spots and then you could also have upsets in the conference champ games.

In what world does the 16th best team with 3+ losses ever deserve a chance to win a National title?

8 max. 16 in football is absurd.

ETA: also, that’s an opinion not an attitude.

Is the 16th best team with 3 losses really the 16th best team?

Maybe... perhaps... possibly...however it's often their name. Nice article BTW.

Listen a lot of us are living in wonderland, is on the SEC with a 12-1 record will always be in the playoffs, you can be awesome and not even be given the chance to show how awesome you are because of things out of your control.

We are talking the same division, not college to pro. No one can tell how these games would go because they don't get the chance. The BCS actually eat giving these teams more of a chance than the playoffs, and Boise st. in particular was moderately successful

I’m getting a headache just trying to figure out why you wrote this the way you did.

How did this get 6 upvotes? D1 college football has a playoff...and the quarterfinals aren’t usually that close of games.

sorry, my phone does weird things sometimes, when I'm on an actual keyboard sentences work a lot better.

The system as it is currently doesn't allow for any of the lower conferences even a chance to get in, due to the heavy weighting of the big 4 or 3.5 usually. I'm not saying a huge playoff, but at least 8 teams I still think 16, but apparently Div I schools can't handle the extra games, while Div II has no problem with it.

If anything the regular season becomes more important.

Right now once you've lost 2 your season is over

I’d disagree. Not going to happen this year, but if we lost to Pedo State and say LSU. Beating Bama, Georgia, A&M and winning the sec championship would certainly put us into the top four based on our conference’s ridiculous strength of schedule.

My diluted comment was more directed at the 16 proposal, I could possibly get onboard with an 8 team system.

I am fine with the 4 team playoff as it is now and I am completely against anything diluting the regular season. However, I think an 8 team playoff that includes P-5 conference champions, 1 G5, and 2 at large bids is the only form of expansion I could get behind. It does not dilute the regular season, as you still have to win your conference championship to make it. It would make other conferences (i.e. the BIG12, PAC12, and G5) feel relevant, and shut them up when they lose in the first round. The SEC would still be almost guaranteed to get 2 teams in every year under this format.
