I'm not necessarily disagreeing but it wasn't all that long ago that we used the same logic with running backs. it was believed that if you constantly rotate running backs you're not allowing them to get into a rhythm or groove.

That would be a first in Gus' career.

I'm not sure that Gus has ever been in the situation, or perhaps opportunity, that he finds himself in right now.

With ellitors' last post we may be looking at 2 quarterbacks in a one or more games. Just from my point of view, if I'm trying to settle on a quarterback why not also make it an opportunity to try and confuse the hell out of our opponents defenses.

You have to admit, Gus and a few others are redefining how football is played.

I won't bring it up again.

You mean the Wildcat. I wouldn't call that a 2 QB system either but let's not do the rotating series crap we've seen before.

Johnson is good enough as a runner and Marshall is good enough as a passer that we won't need the 2 QB system. Whoever starts will be our only QB. No sense in telling the defense what your going to do and breaking our QBs rhythm when they are both skilled at running and passing.

Gus seems to like to get the #2 guy a few reps each game.

“The effort was good. The tackling was a lot better,” he said. “We chart loafs or lack of finish, missed tackles, missed assignments and any pre-snap or after-the-whistle penalties, and all of that went down, so in that respect it was improved from the previous scrimmage.

Quote from EJ over the weekend. I have no idea if this kind of thing is normal at this level, but I think the attention to detail, the edge, the thoroughness of our defensive staff will pay dividends this season.

There was a certain messiness to BVG's D that hopefully is being cleaned up.

Notre Dame used a 2-QB system last year and made the NCG. Golson started but the more polished passer, Tommy Rees, threw passes in 9/13 games. It worked for them reasonably well.

Fwiw I talked to a walkons dad today and he said his son said no way JJ redshirts this year. He expects that he will become the starter at some point during the season and if we ever fall behind and have to pass JJ will come in. This is all one walkons opinion but he does play an offensive skill position. I also asked him about Kiehl and he pretty much said what others have been saying and I didn't want to believe. He looked great the 1st couple of practices but when they really started doing a lot of the 11 on 11 he went back to his 2012 ways and looked totally lost. The 1st scrimmage was the nail in the coffin.

His stats from last year say the opposite of this.

Excellent argument for single QB system

Well I think that was the theory behind using him as a "closer". So far as I know Kelly never gave a better explanation. The impression I had was just that they trusted him to make better decisions than Golson. Whether that trust is backed up by stats or not idk.

Or I could be wrong.

Not a 2 QB system. Golson was the guy once they found out what he could do.

Golson 318 pass attempts
Rees 59 attempts

Compare this to Texas AM:
Manziel 434 attempts
Showers 44 attempts

mirrors what i've heard on KF.

JJ may be too talented to not play at some point, but if NM is as well, what do we do?

Its good to hear that the two new guys are better than the two from last year. We obviously needed something better than what we had from last year. JJ or NM, either one starting will be fine by me.

Easy solution. You play the guy that gives you the best opportunity to win every Saturday.

I think it depends on how strong the running game is without the QB. If we can still effectively run the ball with JJ then it would make sense to me to play the better passer.

Also heard the RT job was between Young and Coleman with Young having the edge right now. Coleman would be the backup at both OT's and Danzey at both guard positions.
