Nix certainly isn’t scrawny. Just not a pain train.

Nix is as ready as Peyton Manning was as a college frosh. Not comparing the two as QB’s - just saying that Nix has been running complicated passing offenses for the last 6 years and he is a football junkie.

If you guys think that Gatewood having a year of Gus coaching gives him a leg up on Nix, you are mistaken.

I don't give a damn who the starter is. I just know Gus. He changed the entire game plan, that had been practiced for two weeks, two nights before our opener with Clemson a few years ago. Gus will never show his hand before it is needed. In fact, Gus will go out of his way to show subterfuge.

I see the writing on the wall very clearly if it is Nix.

-Gus Malzahn calling the offense again
- More or less a pocket passer throwing to elementary routes and being just as under-utilized as Stidham was last year.
- Very shaky depth and chemistry at receiver.

15-0 ship!

I'd be ok with Nix starting and Joey spelling relief with a couple of caveats..

A) Nix shouldn't throw the ball more than 15 times against Oregon given the fall camp our oline and receivers have had. We have plenty of RB depth and two QBs that can run. Let's use them.

B) Don't send Joey out there only to be used like JF3 or Willis. Let him run the playbook, otherwise keep him on the bench.

This should be true for any backup QB. Getting game experience isn't just handing off the ball.

If its mop-up garbage time, sure hand it off every snap.

If it's a random down in the 2nd quarter of a tie game, yeah have him run the whole gameplan. Dont guarantee a run for the defense to key on.

I dont trust Gus to not do that though.

I started expecting Bo Nix to be the starter about the time i learned he was committed to us. It seemed sealed deal the moment he inked his name on the LOI. He is the best prospect we have had in years. Joey is a freak Athlete but Bo knows QBing. I don't get the Gatewood train. Based on what everybody is saying I guarantee the first mistake Bo makes, and he will make mistakes, people are yelling for the bench.

To me it's about knowing the type of offense Gus has run with a similar sized QB.

I like that offense infinitely better than the Stidham offense.

Oh, idk. It may have to do with all of his teammates saying how freakishly close to Cam he is.

Why wouldn’t they? The QB race is razor thin. If one QB comes out and pulls a JJ or Stidham, why would you not want to try the other QB?

None of whom were remotely close to ever playing with Cam.

I get why they say that, but that means very little

Disagree strongly.

If you have a backup QB, he needs to go full speed every time you are presented an opportunity. All it takes for him to be the starter is one bad step in practice.

I would think this would be obvious, but based on how Joey was used last year it doesn't appear that our staff agrees with me.

I think this is about Gus realizing what type of offense make his teams the most successful. He wants to run a balanced HUNH but, he's at his best as a play caller with a run heavy read-option offense. For the latter, you don't need a great passer, but you do need a great athlete who's capable of taking it to the house with his feet or dropping a 60 yard bomb over a DB in one on one coverage down the field.. Hence my heartburn with starting Nix over Gatewood.

Only if that Qb can connect on the deep ball and doesnt tuck the ball and take off instead of keeping eyes downfield

Nick Marshall missed quite a few deep balls, and still took Auburn to the NC game.

It means more than all these reporters, etc. that only see about 5 minutes of practice, if that.
