It's really damning on Malzahn that a true freshman qb is our best option 7 years into his tenure.

Clemson also has superior coaching and a superior supporting cast for Trevor Lawrence. That, along with the fact (or opinion, like some will argue) that Bo Nix isn’t as good as Trevor Lawrence.
I hope he proves me wrong. It’ll be tough, though.

It would be one thing if Nix was a high 3-star/low 4-star and he was beating out Gatewood.

Lawrence is one of the best QB prospects of all time. Fromm, however, was rated lower than Nix and did quite well.

Clemson seemed to do ok with one last year
He had a quality Oline, great coaching, and a similar set of weapons surrounding him
So we will see how that comparison holds up.

And played almost nobody for the majority of the season. By the end of the season, he was ready to face real competition.

The thing is, Jake Fromm was thrown into the fire because Jacob Eason got injured. He originally lost the QB competition.
Tua took over for Jalen Hurts in his sophomore season, but got experience during his freshman year.
Trevor Lawrence took over for Kelly Bryant, but not until later in the year. It didn’t happen week 1.
Our competition is different than all of the above.

quote:Yeah, Tua had previous experience, but I’m pretty sure the year or 2 prior, Hurts won the starting spot as a true freshman vs Blake Barnet? in their season opener. Now I’m not going to argue that we have the same level of talent as Bama, but Saban was in a similar situation regarding QBs as we are now.

Historically, not many true freshman start at QB at this level but that’s changing. Incoming freshman have never had as much specialized training and coaching as they do nowadays.

I'm just not feeling the same concern about Nix being a true freshman as others I guess.
Particularly not in the context of Nix vs. Gatewood (I like Joey btw and I'm perfectly happy to see him win the starting role if that happens). Gatewood and Nix will both have trial by fire starts to the season regardless, and Nix probably has the pedigree for learning quickly on the job.
While this isn't customary for Gus, it shouldn't be surprising considering how little he puts into the hands of backup QBs and how reliant he's been on transfers.

OT: But a RS Freshman beat out Tate Martell and his immediate eligibility at Miami.

Needs its own thread. Great choice

My biggest concern with a Nix led offense in his freshman year is durability. Unless Gus is going to run a more Stidham-like offense, his wants his QBs to run the ball a good bit. Nix wasn't sacked in like his last 2 years of high school and he's only been in a college weight training program for a little while. Now our OL may be more suited to pass protect and not run blocking so maybe this is part of the plan but I'm a bit nervous.
I love the idea of either QB.I lean towards Gatewood but I am hoping Nix is our version of Baker Mayfield... passionate, edgy, high energy, extreme competitor with a chip on his shoulder. Either way I ready to find out.

I'm slightly pro-Gatewood too, but for no legitimate reason.
For some reason I have in my head that Nix is more likely to lead to a vanilla/safe offense, but I have no real reason to think that's true.

System has a lot to do with success. Look what Stidham did at Baylor and look what qbs have done at Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, and tOSU. With a good system you do not have to be elite to be successful. Jalen Hurts was a damn RB and almost won the Heisman in Bama's system

If you cherry pick games at Auburn when he played similar defenses to his Baylor snaps his stats were almost identical. His problem at Auburn was he didn't always play bad defenses.
