So far I think you can say the same for us. We just have to clean up the simple things although that's kind of a double edge sword.
Yep. Just throwing out the almost comical amount of interceptions the first 5 games, we’ve shown a lot of good things. We’ve got to find a way offensively to get the ball out efficiently. Running game is doing well for the most part. Passing game I don’t know if it is Thorne being slow to make reads or receivers not getting open. Common sense would be combo of both and I think a lot Thorne just hanging onto his primary receiver too long and not checking down.
Defense is playing mostly sound. We can all complain about our use of rushing 3 guys, but overall they have been a serviceable enough. Clean up some of the dumb penalties and offensively be more efficient and we really can compete. We were outmatched out there today, but could have been a much closer game.
All still falls on the coach’s heads ultimately. It’s hard to see signs of life, but they are there.

On one hand, it seems like it should be easier to correct the mistakes. On the other hand it's worrisome that we can't get them corrected.
Body language is worrisome to me. Hugh doesn't look great. Payton looks like he is worn out and plays tight. The players talk about needing to play a perfect game to win, and that isn't going to happen. Nobody is playing loose. They are projecting a 2012 season, but so far I don't hear real talk of quitting or losing recruits.
Hugh isnt the same guy doing this dance on the sidelines.

That’s my biggest concern as well. Everyone is pressing way too much, which makes mistakes just multiply.

I love how you popularly trash Thornes passing today but say the defense is sound.
I have been saying since the Cal game our defense is giving wayyyyy too much cushion. It's easy to play sound when you are playing so far back that you tackle the receiver as soon as the play is made.
Beck was 20 for 20 on passes less than 15 yards. That's absurd.

Cal was not a bad loss on the big stage. They are a solid bowl team. It was bad because we lost by so many turnovers, but that effect is felt locally.

Yeah today was the defenses worst game. Still played pretty well considering the talent Georgia has on offense. The scheme is doing this defense no favors though. Our linebacker are just not good in coverage and they're in coverage way more than they should be. I'm with you on the cushion our corners are giving too.

When did I do this?
And so far this season I’d say our defense has played mostly sound. Scoring defense has been good. They’ve given up yards for sure, but have been put in bad situations all year. Today as probably their worst day.

1. I was talking about the season as a whole to this point, not just one game.
2. I would say that is a pretty fair critique of Thorne overall, wouldn’t you? That is something he struggles with.
3. In that very post I also lay blame on wide receivers.
At no point is that trashing his passing today, but a very fair assessment of something he struggles with. The only comment I made about Thorne’a passing all game was one play where I begged him to dump it off to the running back. I’ve been very fair to Thorne to this point. Don’t carry over other arguments you’ve had with others to me.
As for the defense, do you not agree with this ending part of the quote that is vital to the overall statement?

quote:We are getting attacked, and not attacking. The last quarter we were getting pushed back flat footed. The game was fading away then, so I realize we are not usually that passive, but we need to force the issue more often. The passing defense gives too much, the rush defense is decent, but more often than not, the opponent is reaching the line to gain. I was actually impressed we stopped Georgia for a 1 yard gain when they needed only a foot because they managed to give up the yard to gain and not much more.

Agree with all that. If we are sticking with the 3-4 scheme then I think we need to be blitzing much more than we do. Along with playing a lot more man on the back end. They seem to lose receivers in zone way too much. The DL has played better than I expected before the season. It's just hard to get consistent pressure rushing only 3 or 4 with 5 or 6 to block them in the passing game. QBs are sitting back there all day just waiting for a receiver to beat his man or clear into the open spot in zone. No one can cover for as long as they're being asked to a lot of the time.
Gotta be way more aggressive for this scheme to work imo.

I've heard people say he locks into receivers, but I dont see it. I dont know what he is coached to see.

I guess, but this defense forces the issue less than Derek Mason. Hugh Freeze's Liberty career promised a ton of sacks and turnovers. I am not seeing that opportunity to force turnovers minus the occasional overthrow interception.

Most of the national commentators (and many on this board) only look at rankings and final scores.

And then let Miami come back and beat them in their own house. Plus, Florida State has but one win this season. You wanna know who that is, Cal.

Cal was a terrible loss for the Auburn Tigers in JHS and it always will be baw.
Posted on 10/6/24 at 7:42 am to LanierSpots
Yep. Cal isn’t the worst but we shouldn’t lose to them at home, even if they have Marshawn Lynch.

Ward brought his team back…something trash PT has never done. Miami is no better than Auburn as a team. They just actually have a QB.

I earned that lashing but I disagree. Miami is by far the better program and have a better coach and talent.
Cam Ward was unranked in HS and because of that, he doesn't even help Miami's raw blue chip talent score. Yet they are still ranked ahead.
