I forget where it was mentioned I think a podcast but Alabama coaches like Odom a lot. Said when he visits schools he acts like another guy and fits in really well. Arkansas D was decimated by injuries this year.

Scoring D is a poor judge of a DCs performance… a teams offense and ST heavily influences scoring. Would be much more curious about YPG and YPP, turnovers forced, and Sacks/TFLs.

Well CFB reference doesn’t make that as easily available so clearly it’s not as good of an indicator

As a DC:
Defensive efficiency; based on defense's contribution to scoring margin on per-play basis, adjusted for strength of opposing offenses faced:
2022 Arkansas: 74th
2021 Arkansas: 23rd
2020 Arkansas: 30th
2015 Missouri: 16th
2014 Memphis: 30th
Again, he is historically a top-end DC. Missouri was also in the ~20-30 range in defensive efficiency in two of his three seasons as the HC as well.
Rudimentary base stats (yards per game, PPG) are garbage.

Arkansas YPP was ranked 122nd last year. Auburn, 65th for reference.

Scrolling through the years, YPG looks pretty similar to my scoring defense numbers.
I know where to find YPG and the other metrics Jang
it’s just not as easy to go through and post the numbers for multiple years.

quote:Grantham being hired for DC would be puzzling. He's middling stat-wise, but mainly because he's known as a Rick Trickett-level prick who's difficult to be around. That doesn't seem to fit with this staff at all. Odom would be a great get IMO. He was great as DC at Mizzou, not a bad HC, and 2 of 3 years solid at Arky. AU folks would have to get used to odd fronts though like Mason and Schmedding (3-3-5, etc..).
This is why the only thing worth melting over at this point is the DC hire. Tuberville was lazy and wasted 2 years. Also why order of hires makes no difference. As long as the other staff members can recruit.
I don't think Tubs was lazy at all. He played for an SEC Championship his second year with his original coordinators. Lovett had a similar reputation as Ellis Johnson. He could draw it up on a chalkboard and impress everyone in the room. But he couldn't implement consistently what he drew up. Noel Mazzone was good too but his offense was always very dependent on his QB's cerebral execution. Lots of checks and reads and maybe a little too heady for college ball and having consistent success. I still laugh thinking about when they used to show close-ups of Tubs on the sideline saying, "Noel, what the frick are you doing?!?!" or "Noel, what in the hell was that?!?!"

Arkansas last year is a tough one to judge. Can’t disregard it, but at one point I believe they had a freshman walk-in WR playing DB because injuries had killed them.
Again, can’t disregard their performance, but it was a pretty bizarre year for them from an injury standpoint.

I'm not surprised you like the advanced analytics but any advanced stat that gives me a headache trying to intrepret the metric being scrutinized is garbage in my book. Did Arkansas give up 6.2 yards per play on average last year? If so, that is garbage. K.I.S.S

I agree injuries def did play a role in their performance last year. Mainly sharing in juxtaposition of our season as we all can visualize how our defense did.

Odom sounds like a stability hire. Does Arkansas want to keep him? And does he normally play aggressive, forcing turnovers and/ or creating big plays or does he coach to keep the ball in front?
