Hello, Rebel fans, it's game day…and it feels like
someone has thrown a wet towel on it. The Lane
Kiffin to Auburn rumors (and concern) have grown
stronger. Sources on the Auburn side of the fence
seem to think the Tigers have made Kiffin an offer. We
know Ole Miss has made one. One source on Friday
said the numbers and perks in the Ole Miss offer were
described as "ridiculous,"
when asked about them.
We hear the Auburn offer might be even better.
So, what happens now? We expect there will be
counter offers back and forth. We'll see where the
final chips fall. Kiffin has the world's most astute
sports agent representing him, so we kind of know
that is coming.
I want to be perfectly clear, we do not know how this
all will play out...still. Behind the scenes, we are
already preparing a hot list, as we should be doing.
The bottom line, though, is really no one fits the bill.
No one has the gravitas of Lane Kiffin. If he's out
there, we haven't found the "next guy" that moves
the meter like he does.

Again, we do not know how this thing that has turned
into a saga will end. It's serious, though. Instead of
leaking it had presented Kiffin with a contract
extension, Ole Miss would have been happy to
announce he signed one or at least expressed his
intent to sign it. That has not happened. Not by Ole
Miss. Not by Kiffin.
Not by anyone.
Some Auburn sources believe this morning that Kiffin
will be announced as its next head coach on Friday. I
don't know that to be true, but it sure fits the time
line. The day after Ole Miss plays its last regular-
season game and they day before Auburn does. It
feels like we've been through this scenario once
before.
Warning: There is a lot of supposition out there.
These words I'm writing today.…I suppose.…also have a
lot of supposition. But as the old saying goes,
"Where
there's smoke, there's fire." And that's usually the
case. In this case, there is simply too much smoke to
not say anything. I reckon there's some more
supposition.
I see it.
You see it.
The players see it.
We all see it.
And nobody is giving up on Lane Kiffin staying in
Oxford. Keith Carter and Dr. Glenn Boyce will do their
very best.
No one is giving up.
But as the sun rises on this Saturday and Ole Miss is
about to play the Arkansas Razorbacks in
Fayetteville, this is the most demanding…and
admitedly irritating..situation at hand. This is what
everyone is talking about.
This is what I chose to first write about this morning.
In almost 30 years of covering sports, I know these
situations can change very quickly. Everything I said
above could be wrongly washed as wrong in a nano
second. With a change of heart or mind.…or the
analytics. But this is how I believe it to be as of this
writing.
It's not over yet.
