Did anyone else observe we were running a noticeable number of wide plays to the short side of the field? Outside handoffs, tosses, screens. I know you have to consider matchups and predictability and what not. But there were multiple times where we ran plays to the short side where our guys would’ve greatly benefited from more wiggle room. Seems pretty obvious to me.

I guess add it to the list of “weird but not concerning... yet” list of coaching decisions.

I noticed it and hated it too. I've never been a fan of attacking the perimeter to the short side of the field. It only helps the defense out. Make them defend more space and your chance at success goes up.

Fowler and Herbstreit brought up what the Penn St OC said in their meetings with him. He said he always tries to make a defense defend the full 53 & 1/3 yards the width of the field as well as everything behind them. Running into the boundary has always seemed like you're limiting the options of your offense.

Just my opinion, but I've always hated it.

It's a numbers thing and blocking. Sometimes the numbers favor the short side of the field.

Actually the hash marks should be like the NFL in my opinion especially with the size of players in todays game

I agree. The Hash marks need to be NFL like, bc of how the college game has evolved with bigger faster players.

And I agree too, that if the short side is less defended a coach will many times call the play there bc of better blocking and better success.

How many times do we see a play run to the wide side bc we feel we have the speed, to see a safety who is on that side more often than not, and slips in and causing a loss of yardage...A lot.

^this.

Often schemes skew to the wide side on defense because it is so Much field to defend.
I heard Tubbs say one time, that in many situations you have to dedicate an extra guy to the field to protect against big play.

They probably count the box, and then pick a side to run.
