Be nice to talk more basketball... someday

Not much really to talk about a few before summer team practice begins but I’ll try to give my best starting lineups and what I think their roles will be.

PG - Pettiford/Magwood ( w/ Hall playing some point forward)
SG - Overton/Bashir/Walker
SF - Freeman/Bashir/Hall
PF - Hall/williams/Murphy
C - Murphy/Opurum

Totally different team from last season. Probably still need another big. Everything changes if Pettiford get a mid round 1st round grade. I expect him to be back but all it takes is one team to love you. But I’m gonna speak as if he’s back.

Last season the 2 and 3 were essentially interchangeable. I could see that from the 3 and 4 this season. Murphy will probably be our most important player with Hall being our best. Pettiford if he finds consistency each game and handles the pressure of being the “man” could find himself being the best.

Anyway I think Hall plays the most minutes averaging around 30 minutes a game and probably expands to 34 a game in mist win situations. Followed by Pettiford at 28, and Murphy at 25. The others will all get around 14-22 minutess a game with the exceptions of Williams and Magwood. All depends on them to earn 10 minutes or so in the summer. Walker I expect to be an in case of emergency guy. He’s a lot stronger than he looks so if he can learn to play good defense he can find his way on the court earlier. He can shoot it but is inconsistent.

Outside of our starting 5 and running our base flex cut offense there are so many options if Murphy is off the court. Could play Hall as a point forward role much like we did when the offense would run through CBM but Hall is much better at the rim. Could look similar to an aTm offense or even the Miami team that bounced us out of the NCAA a couple years ago. Huge 4 guard lineup with a shot blocker parked down low on defense.

Roles -
Pettiford - primary ball handler/iso/late shot clock
Magwood - learn the system/improve each week/ volume shoot when on the court
Overton - defender/slash to the basket/3 and D some
Bashir - hardest for me to see how he handles not being the primary offensive guy on his team/needs to shoot it around 38-42% from 3/ needs to prove he can bang with physical guards
Walker - work on foot quickness and ball handling/become good defender/work on shot consistency/ won’t play much
Freeman - 3 and D guy/ can bang for rebounds, CMo type that can score/needs to try to get garbage points on backside rebounding
Hall - I’m my opinion if he can be a 16/8 guy will go a long way to see if we are a contender or pretender. Has all the skills but is a volume guy needs to take better shots and cut out the bad ones/will be your secondary late shot clock guy/ will go to the FT line a lot so getting above 80 % there would help the team greatly.
Williams - we need Williams to be ready to go by the time the season starts/ he is very talented but very inexperienced/hope he plays like redshirt CWill a few years ago no fear and just plays hard and not scared of the moment like CWill seemed to be his last couple seasons
Murphy - gotta have him be the man/might need to be the real team leader/ rebound his arse off/ play elite interior defense/he can be a better scorer then 8 per game depending on how well our drives to the basket are from he could get dump offs, lobs, rebound put backs, and does have decent dribbling skills
Opurum - block shots/rebound/ play with leverage on defense and don’t pick up dumb fouls/lob guy on offense/ has good hands so like a mini Walker Kessler can play well in the air

Opurum

There's zero way to know if he'll even be playable in the high major college level.

That’s why is primary role is purely defense. Block shots, rebound, play defense with leverage (meaning study film make opposing player go offensively to their weaknesses)

But we could say the same about all the players. How are they going to handle the athleticism of the SEC, the physical nature of it, and the grind game after game. Murphy and Overton are the only ones to really play in that. Hall some at UCF but shot so much no clue if he can play in a system that is so defined. May see a lot of “open” offense meaning no plays called this coming year when last season I think Burgo was calling 90-95% of play calls

Nice. Only thing I would change is Bashir starting at the 2 in front of Overton

When we take this many guys, we’ll likely have a dud. Happened last year

Opurum is intriguing but certainly within the group that’s less certain of a deal

Until I see some of these guys play together I’m sticking to my prediction that on paper if everything works out and they play together like a first year group of guys play together then around a 7/8 seed in the NCAA.

Thats no diss on Bruce or any of the players. We went out and got a couple guys that could possibly make an nba team if they play above what they have.

But I’m open to everything gelling and working our way toward a 5ish seed if we win some big games. Top 20 team for this season would be an incredible accomplishment.

I agree, too many new faces that have to learn to play together. On the high side maybe a 4 seed in the NCAA tourney.

The good news is that this same scenario applies to almost every top team in the SEC.

The reality of the current era in college basketball particularly is that no one has any real bearing on how a given team will pan out. Remember, Kansas was pre-season #1 coming into this past season based on its roster. Kansas State and Indiana both had highly thought of rosters, too, and Arkansas was another. Of those only Arkansas was able to pull it together down the stretch.

Many programs are going to be able to recruit talent and put a roster together. What will continue to separate teams is how those rosters gel and how the locker room comes together. The roster has to make sense on the court and the pieces have to fit off the court. Chemistry has to be developed anew every season with minimal continuity. The truth is, given the constricted timeframe coaches now work within, that chemistry aspect is much more of a crapshoot than anyone wants to admit.

Some very good coaches of some very good programs are going to inevitably miss on roster construction for no other reason than that is just how it is now. Fans are going to have to develop a different kind of patience in this new world.

its entirely too early to guess what seed this team is going to be when the roster hasnt even been finalized and they havent played a single game together

I think we get another 1 or 2 seed next year

BP is a legend and we still have Petty! Plus we scooped up some really, really talented players.

Exactly. I normally would be hesitant to get excited about a mostly brand new roster but this was another record breaking transfer portal year. Who in the SEC is returning more than 2-3 rotation guys?
