It was part of a failed expansion into the US by the CFL. There was like 7 different American CFL teams between 93-95.

LINK

quote:

The first American team, the Sacramento Gold Miners, joined in 1993. The league added three more American teams in 1994, after which two more teams joined, one re-located and one folded to bring the total to five in 1995. In the latter year, the teams were aligned into a new South Division. The three years saw numerous ownership debacles on both sides of the U.S.–Canada border. The Baltimore Stallions became the only American-based team to win the Grey Cupchampionship, in 1995.

With the exception of Baltimore, all of the American teams consistently lost money. CFL games in the United States by its American teams averaged 10,000 to 15,000 in paid attendance, while the Stallions ranged from 30,000 to 37,000. (At the time, the CFL was a gate-driven league.) Tension also arose between the American and Canadian contingents over rule changes, scheduling, import rules, and even the name of the league itself. Facing these difficulties, the league returned to be an exclusively Canadian one beginning with the 1996 season.

To me this is the most interesting attempt at pro football in Birmingham because all the others I can think of were with start-up leagues where the league itself folded, but this was with an established league. Makes you wonder if it could've stuck if given the chance.

And he just got suspended by the NFL for 3 games too after he got arrested with about 5 grams of weed. Vikings probably didn't want to deal with that for a 3rd string guy. I'm not sure what team would, this could be the end of his NFL career

But the AAFL proved there is a market for minor league football
No it didn’t. The attendance in Birmingham was among the worst it had ever been for any professional football team in the city. I have no confidence that the attendance situation would’ve improved the longer the Iron were here either.

Birmingham Stallions: > 30,000 per game
Birmingham Americans: 43,000 per game
Birmingham Thunderbolts: 17,000 per game
Birmingham Barracudas: 16,800 per game

Birmingham Iron weekly attendance
17,039
17,319
6,539
13,310
17,338

Tre Williams got suspended for two games by the NFL. Anyone know why? Read article on SDS and it did not have a reason

Grant reunites with his former OC. That’s a good spot for him to be in

Corey Coleman tore his ACL with the Giants. Should help Darius Slayton get on the field.

Ha. Oops

I was going to say that the stars are aligning for Darius, but apparently he has a hamstring issue himself.
