Gus being employed by Auburn in 2019 is a reflection of these things IMO, either one or both:

- We can’t afford the buyout
-Leath doesn’t want egg on his face

It should come down to:
A) No Confidence Gus can lead this program.
B) You believe Gus can right the ship.

The buyout should not influence this decision. It is not any cheaper to pay Gus a couple of years and then make a decision.

To me, he has already lost the fan base. Bite the bullet and rip the bandaid off.

The problem is there isn't any light at the end of the tunnel, and while I'm not one who thinks Gus is going to lead us to anything worse than this, 2 more years of this sounds absolutely miserable.

We’ve seen this play out at Auburn before though, yet we all act like it’s the worst disaster in Auburn football history when we fall well short of expectations. There is a reason Auburn has the perception that our best years are when people expect the least from us, because that is how it has always been.

Auburn still has a lot of young talent on this team. It’s not difficult to see a scenario where Auburn gets a Kelly Bryant at QB, the oline gels in their second year playing together, Boobie takes a huge step forward in his second season starting, and we exceed everyone’s expectations next year.

Sure I would like Auburn to find the next big time coach who can consistently win 10 games a year. But the number of coaches that can do that, especially in the SEC west with our schedule, is just pretty small imo. I think that’s just the reality of the situation.

And then I see names like Mike Gundy tossed out there for Auburn and I just laugh. You think Oklahoma State fans aren’t having the same conversation right now, about moving on from their coach who hasn’t won the conference in like 7 years and is staring down a 6-6 season?

Could be, although I don't think Bryant is necessarily an answer and we have talent holes on the roster that are significant.

Plus, when you manage to lose 4 games even in an "up" year, you start to question whether there are any additional 2013s ahead for Gus. I would not be shocked to see Auburn go 9-4 or something next year, but it'll surely come with some inexplicable decisions/losses. We'll hit our stride per usual and then probably fall off when it matters. And we'll be sitting there with a 7, 8, 9 win coach pondering whether we're stupid to pay the buyout when "he wasn't that bad" this year.

We'll keep him, get a bit excited for 2020, then fall on our face.

That’s not PAM is it?

I thought the same thing. Especially in light of the article that Marshall just posted yesterday or the day before

Can anyone remember what Van Gorder said in that interview that made PM make that face?

The 03 team would never have lost to this year's UT or MSU, and probably not LSU either.

The 03 team actually beat a top ten Tennessee team at home and a top ten Arkansas team on the road.

But the similarities are there. That was a massively disappointing season and Tubs may have been justifiably fired after it. Biggest difference though is that the 2003 team had a slew of talented guys that were coming back with lots of experience. The 2018 Auburn team is already struggling with talent and will lose a lot of experience in key areas next year.

If Gus is back next year expect the return of 4 Game Gus at the beginning of the season, 7-8 wins, and cap the season off with losses to our rivals and a bowl game loss. Rinse and repeat every year until he's gone!!!!
