A guy like Patterson would MAYBE be near his level. Patterson has yet to prove that he is anything more than a mid-major star. This is TCU's first season in the Big 12 and so far they are a 5-2 team that has played a very favorable schedule, having lost to the only two "good" teams they have played. Their remaining 5 games are all against name-programs in the Big 12, we'll see how he handles this run because he's never seen anything like it at TCU before. Could be anywhere from a 4 loss, to a 6 loss season for them (not counting a Bowl game).

In Patterson's defense, he did lose his QB this year and this is really his youngest team that he has had at TCU. Very young team.

True, but he has what, two BCS bowl wins to his name?

You have to think what someone like Patterson... or Petrino or Butch D. or Charlie Strong... could do with AU's resources.

We have a lot of good players and a lot of attractive things to get more. If we have a HC that recruits have confidence in, he/we could get things on track quickly.

Chizik, by most accounts, is not the answer. He might actually have the capabilities to right the ship, but no one believes in him at this point. Not the fans and not the player. Ultimately, that is the reason for the need in a change. We have to show the players and fans that this is unacceptable.

One other thing that I have been thinking...

For whatever reason, every time that we have made a coaching change in recent history, we see a dramatic turnaround.

Barfield - 1980: 5-6 -> Dye - 1981: 5-6; 1982: 9-3; 1983: 11-1
Dye - 1992: 5-5-1 -> T. Bowden - 1993: 11-0; 1994: 9-1-1
Bowden - 1998: 3-8 -> Tuberville - 1999: 5-6; 2000: 9-4
Tuberville - 2008: 5-7-> Chizik - 2009: 8-5; 2010: 14-0

I don't think that this is completely due to the newly hired coach, but equally due to the spark/optimism that is creates among the players.

Bottom line, a coaching change of any kind is most likely going to elicit a positive effect on the field. A GOOD coaching change will allow us to get things back on track quickly and have us enjoying AU football again for years to come.

Even a bad hire will probably produce a better result than this current abomination that we are witnessing this year.

Doing nothing will sink AU further into the abyss and will only take longer to eventually get it back to a top-tier SEC program.

Hallelujah.... holy shite... where's the Tylenol.

I don't care that he's a dick. Hell, Saban is a dick and he's a damn good football coach. But when Saban left LSU there was no fire to be put out there, Les walked into a program firing on all cylinders.

You think Kraigthorpe felt that way after walking into Louisville behind Petrino? He couldn't fix what Petrino left him and Strong is really just now putting that program to rights.

You think whatever coach walks into the Arkansas dumpster fire that Petrino left behind him has a chance to fix it? They already tossed John L into that buzzsaw (not that he's a good coach or anything, just convenient) and I feel sorry for the next guy they hire at Arky. It's going to take one hell of a coach to fix the mess Petrino left behind him.

Remember this. Petrino left 2 college programs when they were at their peaks. Both of those programs went from historic best teams to total, absolute raging dumpster fires. Petrino didn't get tossed out of either place because his teams were losing. Saban didn't either. But the difference between the coaches (other than Petrino's 0-4 record vs Saban) is one of them leaves programs better than he found them, and the other one leaves dumpster fires in his wake.

We hire Petrino, yeah sure we'll win some games. But in a few years we'll just be another dumpster fire. The guy is always looking for the next best thing (what do you think ole Jessica was?). Always. And when he leaves for his new next best thing he'll leave another dumpster fire behind him. And everyone will be on here crying "Fire the AD" "Get Dye out of the program" "We just want wins".

Bookmark this thread, and if Petrino is still our coach in 5 or 10 years, or if he leaves and we just swim along no problem then I'll eat plenty of crow. But there are so many other options that don't have his history of ruining programs.

Hire Jimbo, hire Strong, hire BVG, whatever. Find someone to replace Chizik. But stop hoping and praying that we hire a guy we're just going to be replacing after a few seasons.

Well, I guess all the great inside information about Chizik being fired on Sunday and kicked out is just BS. As usual.

People should just stop making shite up or coping shite from other boards that is made up.

Yea and I thought I read here by one of the new posters that his inside info said Sunday.

Chiz needs to be replaced now for the betterment of the team. But I still dont think anything will happen until December. If then.

Reading tea leaves, Chizik knows he will be removed at season's end. You could hear it in his voice, also his words that HE will be evaluated at the end of the year. Negotiations are underway.

I really hope this isn't the case. We need a competent AD to make this hire and Jay Jacobs has proven he is anything but competent. Get rid of Jacobs and all his underlings along with Dye and start all over.

Excellent point...one of the reasons I'm not high on Petrino.

Where does this line of thinking come from and why is it always used in such a negative connotation? Aren't all coaches 'always looking for the next best thing' ? How many coaches can you think of that are content with their current gig to the point of refusing to entertain other offers? Maybe less than half a dozen in all of college football? Are we so insecure at Auburn we are concerned that a coach would take our head coaching position as a stepping stone to something else?

I don't recall many (if any) Arkansas fans being worried about Petrino jumping ship going into his 5th season there (pretty sure his $18 million buyout nullified those worries).

Two things would make me happiest today. One would be winning the $1000 Lowe's giftcard from the Parade of Homes I'm in the running for and the other would be hiring Petrino TODAY.

I wish something would happen soon but dont see it. I say if anything happens, its after the season and I wont believe the Petrino talk until I see it. People constantly keep spewing bullshite because of the current situation we are in right now. No one knows shite right now IMO.

I would agree. If we do make a move, it better be a damn good one. If you factor in Chiz's buyout, assistant's buyouts, contract for a new coach and his crew, you're pushing 20 million. I still think there's a ~10% chance Chiz will be back.

This. I have to believe that folks who fear bobby would just up and leave have to be using it as a smoke screen for other issues with him.
