At Boise, you have to go where the talent is and there’s simply not much major CFB talent within 250 miles of the city.
He was smart to recruit CA and TX as much as he did. It paid off for them.
I believe it was more of a cultural clash and lack of understanding at Auburn that resulted in his recruiting woes.

Yeah I get what he had to do at Boise. But saying that Oregon gets whoever they want in the PNW and Boise gets all the other guys basically ignores who’s actually in their classes - kids from southern California and Texas
Though I do think that his lack of needing (or not being able to) recruit locally was a major issue for him when he got to Auburn. He didn’t have to drive across the state to visit high schools at Boise because he might only get one or two guys from a 100-200 mile radius per class anyway. Ultimately, he just didn’t understand the assignment at Auburn and he didn’t have the interest in learning it and that’s maybe the biggest reason why he was out so fast
