We have immediate needs on offense. Not a couple of years to develop talent. We need to utilize both. No one is coming here through the portal. Not even a punter with Dr. Pepper.

I think we had 9 through the portal last season and we’ll probably finish with 5-6 this season.

I’d expect us to have around 5 every year just to plug gaps from guys leaving.

I am all for utilizing the portal. We just need to actually do it.

We have a thread if you guys want to talk about basketball. This thread has done fine for a decade without people feeling like they need to stop by and be choades for their own entertainment

We are — it’s just not what you guys wanted. And it doesn’t bother me one bit if we’re being critical about the level of talent coming in through the portal but I’d ask you guys to reconsider what the portal actually offers a roster. Rarely are we (and most teams) going to pull in season changing players through the portal. There might be 5 each year that can do that for you.

What the portal does is help you fill the gaps that are caused by your own castoff’s leaving.

You lose 3rd stringers and replace them with other program’s 3rd stringers. That’s 99% of what programs are doing right now

That’s quite dramatic. But that’s what y’all love to do so whatever

We talked about (in this thread) supplementing the OL and WR through the portal. On D, we have been fine. The additions have worked. Can't say that for the OL and WR groups. Doesn't help Harsin ran off Kobe. Calzada is average at best, too.

Right but I think that’s what the portal does best — provide stopgaps and bridge years. Folks that think we can solve major positional group problems with the portal are mistaken. Unfortunately the pursuit of guys like Caleb Williams does a bad job at illustrating that.

OL and WR need to be fixed through recruiting at the HS level. We’ve been patching our OL for what feels like a decade now through transfers via JUCO, defensive line castoffs, and now the portal. It’s all about the same.

If we truly offer Robby Ashford we might as well just be burning a scholarship. There is no point in bringing guys in just to bring them in.. I've seen enough of the Sandberg and Loy's of the world (I realize he's a little different situation than them, but the talent is the same level)

Completely agree. It has been years since the guy has played a full season at QB.

Amen. I’ve taken a lot of shite for saying that on the rivals board. They think that route is alright. It’s not. Mississippi State has been doing that for years and they’ll continue being trash.

We should sign somewhere around 3 P5 portals and maximum 2 jucos a year. Whenever we have a decent roster at least.

Ashford wasn’t very good in HS either. Not sure anything has changed since he has been at Oregon

Unfortunately it’s going to take a few seasons for people to get the allusion out of their minds that the portal can solve our problems. Best case scenarios are guys like Jayson Jones or DJ James that have some upside and can start. Most will be depth chart replacements for the guys that just left.

Anyway, we should still pursue that top tier of guys that can really impact a season but it’s just not going to be common that we swing them. And we certainly can’t rely on them as some Auburn fans seem to be doing.
