quote:They got production last year from the portal. This staff seems to be pretty good at talent evaluation. I think they probably missed on OL that they targeted. I personally don't think what we have are bad, but there's a LOT of knee injuries in our top 8 OL.
The problem is that outside of 1 or 2 players Harsin and company were unsuccessful in the portal. So he had to reach at QB, WR, DL, and LB, this team could win 8 games with an improved Calzada but I don’t want to suffer through watching Finley play 12 games.

Last year is a lot different from this year. DJ James, McDonald, and Jones were decent pick ups. Bragg, Worsham, Asante, Ashford, And Calzada are not near the level needed to upgrade the positions or even add quality depth. Hell even Koy Moore was in the portal for a long time so it was obvious several teams had conferences about him. I’m wasting my breath because I don’t believe Harsin will be here in a few months anyways, he does well I dont think he sticks around and if he does bad I think he’s fired.

None of the transfer pick ups have played any. How do you know if they are or are not quality depth?

Guys all this talk about transfer qbs beating out who we have....uh uh, all three of the qbs are, uh, transfers.

Auburn gives head football coaches a five year runway unless there's a major malfunction. That seemingly was manufactured this past offseason, but failed. If I'm desirous about anything, its to see people succeed and that includes Harsin. I want the guy to succeed. I'm not agnostic about it.

Hoke just posted the following initial tidbit on today's scrimmage that just concluded:
quote:
I am told that T.J. Finley and Robby Ashford received the majority of the snaps. Zach Calzada the least of the main three. That would be in line with the pecking order I posted the other day.

There were several here that thought Calzada would be clearly better than TJF. But there was nothing in his stats to support that.
Me.
Like others said, I was also at the Birmingham Bowl.

Alright. I haven't attended a practice since 2006.
I want Auburn and this coaching staff to be successful. I guess I was wrong on Calzada. I hope it is Ashford because he has wheels.

It really isn’t much of a grievance to think he was better than Finley even though they both had similarly shitty stats because he did beat Bama. It was the “we finally have a real QB” posts that were laughable.

From Stultz:
Stay tuned for more
quote:
We are speaking with offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau. Follow along for all updates, mmm'kay? Mmm'kay.
- On QB decision: "Quite honestly, I haven't watched the film yet. It's going to be a hard one. They have all played pretty well."
- On Robby Ashford: When he first got here, he was trying to throw everything so hard. Says we have to throw catchable balls and he's gotten a lot better over the past few weeks.
- On what he was hoping to get out of scrimmage: Tonight was very situational. Broke up scrimmage into different situations. Tried to put the QBs and offense in different looks. They started out a little slow but then got going.
- The offense has gotten into more detail this fall camp compared to last year.
- On receivers: "They are really coming along. They are still progressing and will continue to progress." He's excited about the group though.
- Says the offense is a pro-style system with some no huddle parts. (No huddle? NO HUDDLE!) Can have two tight ends and run the ball and then spread out with four wide.
- Rotated the QBs evenly with the 1s, 2s and 3s. TJ had really good command. Had good precision. Robby was flashy when he ran around, doing a better job at just maturing. He's starting to play the QB position. Zach, we need to keep bringing him along. Zach has good days and bad days.
- On TJ's camp: "He's kinda tabbed as the old player since he was here last year." Said it clicked when transfers were brought in. Said he was initially shocked at first but made him better.
Stay tuned for more

Bryan Matthews Schmedding notes:
quote:
Auburn DC Jeff Schmedding is speaking to the media following Friday afternoon's scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Click refresh, will continue to update...
** Been a good fall camp so far. Looking forward to next two weeks of prep.
** Wanted a clean operation in scrimmage today and operate well in tempo situations.
** Jayson Jones self evaluates and really cares about what he's doing. Has done a good job for us inside and the best is yet to come. Each day you see him correcting things.
** Eugene Asante brings good energy, fits with that LB unit. Adds competition to room.
** Donovan Kaufman is a film junkie. Can play multiple positions. You can hear him out there getting everyone lined up.
** Zac Etheridge doing a good job with safeties. Good competition and guys are helping each other out. Bridges has done a great job for us (answering question).
** Austin Ausberry had a nice pick in scrimmage. Cayden Bridges improved in this scrimmage. Cam Riley had a sack. Eku Leota was giving the offense problems.
** Caused a ton of fumbles last year, got to get more of them. Been working on that.
** Wesley Steiner has done a nice job not taking any steps back. He's taking step by step each day. He's more confident in what we're doing.
** The DL starters have taken big strides in the last few days. Some backups that have impressed and will be a part of the rotation: Morris Joseph, Jeffrey M'Ba and Marcus Bragg.
** Steiner and Riley gained good experience with all the first-team reps in the spring when Owen Pappoe was out. They're all very close and the group fits well together, balance their different skillsets well. Will use different combinations for different needs.
** Not many players at this level know how to prepare like Owen Pappoe does.
** Joseph can play Edge. Uses hands well and a good athlete. We can be versatile with him.
** Craig McDonald has been taken strides over the last week Picking up our defense and scheme.
** Robert Woodyard is progressing at LB. He loves playing in the box. There's a learning curve with young guys and he's starting to trend in the right direction. Has a smile on his face.
** The backup corners are coming along: DJ James and Keionte Scott. The whole DB room understands that they're competing. Good to see Ausberry make a big play today.
*****THAT'S ALL*****

I think we can safely say Calzada won’t be winning the job out of camp at this point.

Zach, we need to keep bringing him along.
This has to be meant as as wake up call to Calzada but, if he's far behind, it possible that the two ahead of him are improved.

If it's truly down to two. What's the best option with this talent?
A QB that can buy time is a valuable thing behind some lines.
And yet a ball manager can go a long way.

To finish off Stultz’s post:
quote:
On Holden Geriner: "He's doing good. He's just really young. He needs time to develop and get better, which he will."
- On Zach Calzada: He was limited in the spring. He wanted to jump in so fast and play like he did before he got hurt. Took some time to get acclimated.
- Who else stood out in the scrimmage? "It's hard to say because it was a short field."
- Says offensive line is starting to get into a groove. He really wouldn't point out one particular player but they are all doing well. Very pleased with where they are right now.
- Tank didn't go today but nothing bad. Just wanted to get other players reps.
- Damari has had a great camp. Kiesau says they will need him this season.
- Tate Johnson and Brandon Council rotated at center.
- Has to find creative ways to get Malcolm Johnson the ball.
- There is a chance that Nick Brahms could be back for the season. "We are still working through it."
That's it for Kiesau.

Both can work. I trust the coaches to determine who gives us the best chance.
Message board warriors pull for who they want but that's usually emotion based.

From JGT:
quote:
This scrimmage was held indoors and included very few spectators. This was done on purpose.
The quarterbacks were average (or worse) again. I’m told Calzada is just not performing right now. OC Eric Kiesau was diplomatic about this tonight by saying it’s about ”consistency“ with Calzada, but the bottom line is that Calzada is their third-best option right now.
Kiesau said Tank didn’t go. He then added some nebulous words about how it probably wasn’t injury-related, but it probably was. I honestly think Tank is going to be fine. I think he’ll play against Mercer and he’ll play the way you think he’d play against Mercer.
Brahms didn’t go again today. It was Tate Johnson and Brandon Council at center. Make of that what you will.
Sounds like the receivers weren’t a huge part of the scrimmage because there was so much emphasis on red zone and situations inside the 20. Receivers are important in those scenarios, too. They did a satisfactory job in a supporting role today. Let’s go with that.
DC Jeff Schmedding was damn near giddy about his group’s play today. They created turnovers, they notched a couple “sacks” (not actually hitting the QBs) and generally played really sound football. That’s a credit to him and the players. I think Auburn’s defense is going to be pretty good assuming the first-team defensive front stays healthy.
Keep in mind that Tank is the offense’s primary weapon and he didn’t play. Still, the defense won this day on its own merit.
IN SHORT: More of the same. I’m still intrigued with Robby Ashford and he may end up winning this thing. He will have a permanent, every-game role regardless. I sense that he’s making more progress day-to-day than Finley right now, but Finley had a head start. I sense that lead is narrowing.

If stories coming out of camp were that TJ had just dominated out of nowhere and taken a massive step forward I think people would be less hesitant. It doesn't really sound like that, it sounds like he's got mastery of the offense and attention to detail, but otherwise is the same guy and ZC has been poor
which is objectively not the outcome we wanted, I think
