8/11 From Brian Stultz and Rivals

quote:

Just got done watching the first five sessions of practice. Here are our thoughts:

First Team Offense

- Zach Calzada, Tank Bigsby (Jarquez Hunter rotating in), Kilian Zierer, Brandon Council, Nick Brahms, Cam Stutts, Austin Troxell, John Samuel Shenker, Shedrick Jackson, Tar'Varish Dawson, Malcolm Johnson Jr.

Second Team Offense

- TJ Finley, Brenden Coffey, Jalil Irvin, Tate Johnson, Alec Jackson, Colby Smith, Tyler Fromm, Ja'Varrius Johnson, Koy Moore, Camden Brown, Sean Jackson and Damari Alston rotating at RB

Offense Notes

- Harsin was constantly reminding the QBs to "Play the game in your head. See the coverage."

- QBs looked better with touch than yesterday

- Worked on ball security and physicality

- Option pitch from the QB was a drill

- WRs worked on high pointing the ball

- Ashford and Geriner had moments but inconsistent. Calzada looked the best out of the QBs today. TJ had a scramble for a good gain during live drills.

First Team Defense

- D-Line Derick Hall, Colby Wooden, Marcus Harris, Eku Leota,

- Linebacker: Cam Riley, Owen Pappoe

- Corners: Jaylin Simpson, Nehemiah Pritchett

- Safeties: Zion Puckett, Cayden Bridges, Donovan Kaufman

Second Team Defense

- D-Line: Marcus Bragg, Jayson Jones, Jeffrey M'ba, (and Morris Joseph, we think)

- Linebackers: Jake Levant, Wesley Steiner

- Cornerbacks: Keionte Scott, J.D. Rhym

- Safeties: Craig McDonald, Marquise Gilbert, A.D. Diamond

Defensive Notes

- Cayden Bridges had a good pass breakup during 1st team vs. 1st team

- A.D. Diamond had an interception off of Finley

- EDGEs were doing step-step punch to try and beat blockers

- Roc had some good things to say about Marcus Bragg, complimenting his habits.

- Secondary worked on rolling fumble and reading the ball drills (Schmedding working with secondary today). Cayden Bridges had a nice snag during drill.

- Colby Wooden and Jayson Jones were leading drills for D-line.

Special Teams

- Carlson made a 41-yard field goal. McPherson made 39-yard field goal with plenty of room to spare.

That's all from our viewing session. We are set to speak with four defensive assistants at 12:30. Until then...

Was anyone assuming he'd be in the 2-deep outside of situational stuff this season?

Also, who tf is Jake Levant at LB on the 2nd team?

You don't reveal your secret weapon this early in the pre-season, obviously.

He’s some walk-on linebacker. That’s all I know.

A white linebacker named Jake at that

Interesting that neither Asante or Tisdol have been in the 2-deep the past couple of days, but this kid has been for I think three days in a row.

Joko I think is going back and forth with Edge some, so maybe he is technically that guy if he is playing up, but kind of shocking neither of the other guys are in that spot.

Who cares his race or where he went to school.

It was a joke. Relax.

Harsin coached Vander Esch. I expect big things out of Jake from State Farm.

He must not remember the highly touted Jake Holland. This poster is a sensitive one.

Yes. Only 5 Stars can become stars, and only 1st rounders are successful in the NFL.

Everyone knows this.

So they hype up Capers and Brown and neither are starting?

I’m with you on Capers but Brown is still young and the coach said he still has to learn all the details. I expect bigger roles later on for him.

Too much is being read into who is practicing at one and two . I am sure the coaches, just like in basketball, are trying different combos right now.

Stultz- Roc Bellantoni notes- ST

quote:

If you want to get your daily step count in, follow Donovan Kaufman around during practice. The sophomore never sticks around in one position too long, serving as Auburn's do-it-all man on defense and special teams.

He's everywhere. At one moment, he's helping lead the first-team secondary at safety. If you flinch, you'll miss seeing him work on special teams in every possible way. It's a task to track him, and that's one of the things Roc Bellantoni loves about the player.

"Everything we ask him to do on special teams, whether it's returning a punt or a kickoff or blocking for the kickoff returner, or rushing a punt or covering a kickoff, whatever we ask him to do, he excels at," the special teams coordinator said. "He's just a really good football player."

It's part of Bellantoni's plan to play the best possible players on special teams, something he states is essential to success. As the coach puts it, it's not high school anymore where you put "the booster club president's son out there on kick return." No matter who you are and how valuable you are to the offense or defense, no one is too good to participate in special teams.

"Your best guys gotta go," Bellantoni said. "To me, special teams is all about personnel and effort. If guys are going hard and you get the right people out there, you can be pretty good on special teams."

This puts a lot on the plate of Kaufman and others asked to play special teams. Bellantoni pointed out that Heisman Trophy winners in the past, including Alabama's Devonta Smith, were utilized on that unit. The coach also mentioned Zion Puckett, who played a lot on special teams last season. For Bellantoni, it's about finding those willing to pay the sacrifice.

"You have to be a leader," the coach said. "You have to be organized. You have to be studying the game at all times."

Kaufman is doing that. So are Puckett, Tank Bigsby, Ja'Varrius Johnson, Tar'Varish and other skill players that will play a significant role on offense or defense. Bellantoni made clear his vision in his new role as coordinator.

"The best players have to play on these units," he said.
