What I think Auburn should do: What I think Auburn will do lines up closely with what I think the Tigers should do.
There is a clear need at tight end. Joiner won’t ever be tied to a specific position — running back or tight end — so it’s tough to classify him as a safe bet at tight end in the future. That’s why adding two tight ends is so important.
This is a position group that hasn’t assembled desirable personnel the last two seasons. Most tight end recruits in this cycle have verbalized to me that Auburn has made its need at tight end clear. Two is the number most of them have heard from coaches, and that’s what I expect to happen.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Appreciate WR signee Matthew Hill (SECCountry)
Honestly Hill is a better fit & more likely to be used correctly by our staff than Ross. Ross meanwhile is a perfect fit at Clemson who love to throw those 50/50 jump balls. Hill will get a chance to do a little of everything for AU. I'm cool with the result
Tho I am still pissed at JLee for getting my hopes up on signing day....

Before I dive deeper into those two prospects — one Auburn missed on and one it signed — let’s take a look at their receiver production in the 2017 seasons. Both prospects played in the highest classification in their respective states. Both were the top receiving option on the squad. From games I saw each play in 2017, Ross had more useful quarterback play. Hill had more other offensive weapons around him.
The results show Hill with more catches and yards. Ross had nearly twice as many touchdowns, though it’s worth noting Hill — who had to play serve several roles for his team — added 5 more touchdowns as a running back and kick returner.
Player Receptions Yards Touchdowns
Matthew Hill 52 879 7
Justyn Ross 37 730 13
Those numbers, to an extent, help describe the types of players they are.
Hill stands 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds. He was a high-volume receiver for his high school, which resulted in the 15 more catches and 149 more yards than Ross. At 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, Ross presents a bigger target in red-zone situations. That helps explain the increased touchdown count for Ross despite less total catches and yards.
In short, the two have different enough skill sets that it’s tough to compare from a strict X’s and O’s standpoint.
Robert’s question and commentary above, however, points more to perception than production — and there’s some merit there.
The general reaction I’ve gotten from Auburn fans on Twitter, Facebook Live and around town is that the Tigers limped to the finish on National Signing Day. Justyn Ross’ decision to sign with Clemson is usually the first conversation point in that discussion. Yes, Auburn would’ve loved to land Ross, the state’s No. 1 prospect. That’s why coaches told other un-offered targets they’d have to wait to see his announcement before a potential offer.
But the miss of Ross shouldn’t overshadow the star power of a guy like Hill who didn’t really make his final decision to sign with Auburn over Clemson until the weekend before Signing Day.
Ross was the No. 7-ranked receiver in the country. Hill came in at No. 17. Ross ranked as the No. 45 overall prospect. Hill was No. 92.
Perhaps the most interesting rankings metric is what Robert mentioned above, that Hill was the top-ranked wide receiver in Georgia for the 2018 class — ahead of Bulldogs’ signee Kearis Jackson. So Hill and Ross were both the best receivers (by rankings, at least) in their respective states, and Georgia is generally thought to be a more competitive high school football state than Alabama.
What makes Hill most appealing is his versatility. As mentioned earlier, he played running back and kick returner for his high school. He also played some safety, which is the position Clemson was recruiting him to play. When he chose Auburn last summer, Alabama was also actively recruiting Hill to play receiver or safety, whichever he preferred.
This was always a highly-coveted prospect. It just took the in-state school a little longer than everyone else to realize it. Georgia didn’t offer Hill until midway through his senior season, around the same time as Clemson. By that time, it was too late for the Bulldogs.
Auburn fans may worry about missing on Ross, who left Alabama altogether. When it’s all said and done, I expect Georgia to be the program that most regrets watching a top wide receiver go out-of-state.
Honestly Hill is a better fit & more likely to be used correctly by our staff than Ross. Ross meanwhile is a perfect fit at Clemson who love to throw those 50/50 jump balls. Hill will get a chance to do a little of everything for AU. I'm cool with the result

In-state defensive tackle DJ Dale draws Derrick Brown comparison from Auburn coaches (SECCountry)
Bama is gonna make DT a priority this cycle (like they did with CB last one) so I'm not optimistic on Dale as he's near top of their board but you know Garner will make this a battle

In-state DT draws Derrick Brown comparison
In most Iron Bowl recruiting battles, the prospect generally has some form of allegiance to either Alabama or Auburn. Both sides have learned that those allegiances — typically based on childhood fandom — don’t dictate the college decisions those prospects make. Those choices are about business, it’s often said.
As for DJ Dale, well, he brings a different perspective to the recruiting rivalry, which he’ll become a centerpiece of in the coming months.
“When I was younger, I actually grew up a Texas fan because of Vince Young,” Dale said, laughing. “That isn’t going to be a factor in my decision.
Alabama and Auburn will both be factors in Dale’s college decision.
The Clay-Chalkville (Ala.) defensive tackle holds offers from the Crimson Tide and Tigers. Both programs offered him in mid-January. Dale also picked up spring offers from Florida State, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Louisville. So this isn’t exclusively an Auburn-Alabama battle. But, as is the case most of the time (unless you’re Justyn Ross), one of the in-state schools tends to win that battle when they actively pursue a prospect.
Auburn tried to get ahead of the curve with Dale by hosting him on a visit in February.
Dale is listed at 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds on his Hudl page, as well as some recruiting service profiles. That shows the progress Dale made physically over the course of his junior season and in the last few months. Dale told SEC Country he weighed in at 320 pounds at Auburn junior day.
That drew a specific complimentary comparison from Auburn coaches.
“Coach Garner said I reminded him of Derrick Brown,” Dale said. “He really likes my film and stuff. He said I remind him of players he has now. He thinks I have a chance to play early.”
That’s high praise, but the strength is there.
Those interactions with Garner and other members of the coaching staff helped Dale recognize all the positives the Tigers bring. He doesn’t have any top schools yet. That’ll come via a top-5 list in March, he said.
The Tigers are likely to crack that group.
“I like how much coaches like to get involved off the field, make you become a better man, things like that,” Dale said. “It meant a lot. It’s a great university. … Right now, they’re in the conversation.”

Taking a look at recent Auburn offers
Auburn sent out two 2019 offers in the last 48 hours worth mentioning.
4-star RB Deondrick Glass, Katy, Texas
4-star DE Brandon Smith, Mineral, Va.
Glass wasn’t included in my 2019 running back primer Tuesday because he hadn’t been offered yet. Now that he has, he’ll come to the forefront of the running back conversation for this class. Auburn dipped into Texas to find its feature running back. Glass is a 4-star prospect who ranks as the No. 16 running back in the class. He’s the No. 196 overall prospect. Glass also holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and others.
Smith is the newest defensive line offer for the Tigers. With offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Florida and others already in hand, Smith picked up his most recent offer from Auburn courtesy of linebackers coach Travis Williams. Smith will be one of the highest-rated recruits Auburn goes after in 2019. He’s the No. 4 weakside defensive end in the nation and the 36th-ranked overall prospect nationally.

So Auburn offered 3* S Kyle Hamilton this week & holy crap I want this kid badly now. Reminds me a lot of Quindarious Monday. He's picked up offers from a ton of schools this week including UGA, CLEM & OHST. Check out his tape

That first play was impressive. He bites hard on the run fake but his recovery was picture perfect. Got beat so he played his man and put his hand right between the receiver's.

I'm half kidding but 83 and especially 80 are really low. I doubt very few kids with that ranking at this time end up 4 star prospects.
Posted on 2/24/18 at 10:38 am to ellitor
Personally I'm more than ready for some 3stars that play like 5stars, than these 5stars that end up like 3stars.

A few 3* fine, more than that and we are Arky or A Mississippi school..

It happens. I believe Sammie Coates was ranked similarly at this point. He ended up a 4 star

I thought Sammy stayed a 3 star.
