RIVALS' REACTION
"Alabama is right on the heels of Oklahoma for the top class in 2019. Alabama has made a big surge this spring and it will likely stay hot into the summer. Look for the Crimson Tide to take over that No. 1 spot in the near future. Auburn is looking to jump into the top 10 before the 2018 season kicks off and the odds of the Tigers doing that look good at this time. Alabama and Auburn are the favorites to land some of the top talent in the country, so both are expected to continue the momentum they have on the recruiting trail in the coming months." – Chad Simmons, Southeast Recruiting Analyst

“I think y’all probably know me well enough that I don’t like to go out and recruit overweight guys,” Grimes said. “I’m more of a guy that likes athleticism. We’ve got a good-looking group. When we jog on the field, we look good. We don’t have a bunch of fat guys, and I like that. It’s kind of funny, but it’s true. We’ve got a good-looking group.”
I like JBs style but there's a thin line. Remember 2008 when Tony Franklin made all the linemen lose a ton of weight for his system. Our tackles played well under 300lbs and we got our shite pushed in on the reg.

QB commit Bo Nix excited about Auburn’s recruiting class (247)
quote:
PINSON VALLEY, Ala., — Auburn fans were not the only ones excited last week when 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe of Grayson (Ga.) committed to the Tigers. Quarterback commit Bo Nix was equally pumped.
“I thought it was really big for Auburn,” Nix said. “He’s obviously a great player. He’s a freak as they say. He can just do it all. He can run sideline to sideline. He can make tackles. And he’s just a leader on defense.”
Nix, a 4-star recruit from Pinson Valley High who committed to Auburn in January, has been the leader of the class up to now when it comes to targeting and recruiting other prospects. With the recent additions of Pappoe and center Jakai Clark, he now has some help — and lots of it. That's particularly true with Pappoe, a national recruit other players have known about for years because of his large profile.
“We’re just trying to reach out to guys that Auburn coaches tell us to go get,” Nix said. “We try our best to go out and make relationships with them and try to put together a really good class”
What is the significance of adding a 5-star recruit to the class?
“I think it’s huge,” Nix said. “Getting one of the best players in the class is going to be huge because everybody wants to play with the best. So if you get the best, everyone’s going to attract.”
According to Nix, other recruits have taken notice of the Tigers, especially after the addition of Pappoe.
“For sure,” Nix said. “We’ve had a lot of guys that we’ve hooked up with that say they’re interested and they want to learn more about it.”
Right now, Auburn has seven 2019 commitments and the No. 16 recruiting class in the country. The Tigers have room for about 15 more recruits.
The class includes one 5-star and three 4-stars. Pappoe is the highest-rated member of the class in the industry generated 247Sports Composite, checking in as the No. 8 recruit in the country. Nix is next highest at No. 66.
Who are Nix’s biggest targets he’d like to join him on the commit list? A few players come to mind, including 5-star Georgia receiver commit Jadon Haselwood and 4-star running back Noah Cain.
“Obviously all the bigger recruits out there,” Nix said. “Really, anybody that Coach (Gus) Malzahn and Coach (Chip) Lindsey and Coach (Tim) Horton tell us to talk to and get up with.”
Overall, he said the response has been “very good.”

Don't think he goes to that extreme but agreed there's a balance. Really interested to see after evaluation period who he targets. I fully expect AU to land some 1-2 OL that might not even have an offer right now

KN has had a bunch of updates on MS kids recently. Here's quick notes on different articles
- AU is sitting #2 for OM commit 3* DE Jamond Gordon. Said if he were to decommit AU would be a top contender. Garner & Woodson lead his recruitment. Wants to play early & that's what AU is selling. Plans to attend BCW
- 4* Buck Derick Hall plans to make decision in June or July. Currently has a top 2 of AU/MSST. Cites both schools engineering programs as a big reason for them being so high on his list. Like Gordon, Garner & Woodson are leading his recruitment. Tigers want him at Buck while MSST want him as a true linebacker. Hall mentions coaching stability & fact knows Gus will be there after new deal being big for AU. Plans to be at BCW. Hall says closer with Gus than any other coach recruiting him right now
- Another MS kid AU is hard after is 4* DE Charles Moore who is committed to MSST. He's currently committed to MSST & says he's been to Starkville somewhere between 30-40 times. However, he's visited AU twice this year & plans to return for BCW. Also says it will be close to the end & named AU as a clear #2 school right now. Cites Garner's experience & track record as a big draw
- Right now if 4* LB Vonta Bentley had to make a commitment Clemson would probably be the choice. However, he plans to take time with his recruitment & says AU is starting to make a push. T-WILL told Bentley wants to talk with him at least two times a week. Bentley says he will "probably" attend BCW
- KN believes that 4* WR Ramel Keyton is a firm take now, that wasn't always the case apparently. Tigers now are ok with taking 3 WRs in this class. KN says decision could still go either way interestingly
- AU is a major threat for 4* DL Jaren Handy. He has Bama at #2 but won't name his leader saying it isn't either instate school (MSST/OM). Sounds like chances are very good AU is team in lead as KN says Handy talked a lot more about AU than any other team. Handy also said he got a "different" feel at AU. Plans to be back for BCW
- Seems like AU is down the list for 5* LB Nakobe Dean. KN says he's VERY close with LSU staff & giving Bama/UGA hard looks as well. Also can't count out Stanford. The good news for AU is that Woodson is close with Dean's mom who is a big voice in his recruitment
- Flipping 4* CB Brandon Turnage from Bama looks like a longshot right now. However, he does plan to visit AU a 2nd time this year this summer

If you look at the weights of our OL, we don't have that problem!!!
We've got 300-320 pound guys that have very little fat, relatively speaking. That's what I like!

Yea, most of them all gained weight vs last year. I think he is more talking about he isn't going to recruit a kid that is just big. Someone like Andre Harris back in 2009. Kid was talented, but had a weight problem for sure.

Yeah I'm not worried about it with Grimes but we played some 285lb OTs with Franklin and their splits were ridiculous. There were 2 -3 feet between each lineman it seemed. Good times

Former 4 star backup Center Brandon Kennedy out of Bama is transfering and able to play immediately as a grad transfer, is there any chance Auburn takes a look at him? He played in 15 games and has 2 years left to play.

It's possible. The grad transfer we just picked up from UMass has 2 years left of eligibility

No idea if AU will pursue him but I imagine that if Grimes is concerned about options at center AU might at least reach out

Hallmark of Air Raid offenses. Mike Leach sometimes has 5 or 6 foot spreads on the O-line.

quote:I know Gus has hinted otherwise but I don't think we have room to add any more initial scholarship counters til next January under the revised recruiting rules passed last June by the NCAA. Under the old rules we could have added him in June & have him count to the 2019 IC list. Not sure that's an option anymore.
is there any chance Auburn takes a look at him?

Wouldn't Grimes have recruited Kennedy? I remember AU showing interest. If he's good enough for Cristobal he's good enough for me

Apparently at some point 4* S Nick Cross plans to take an OV to AU. That's according to Wiltfong
Looks like Bama/FSU battle right now tho

The kid we signed that's already a Center, is he projected to move to another position?
