Yeah, and Justin Fuente was recruiting Willis as a DB to Virginia Tech. Your point?

Possibly some validation he will be Marshall 2.0, although I don't agree that was the case. VT turned to J.Evans to come in and start, so Willis bailed.. right?

KN says that AU will get 4* CB Olaijah Griffin's last OV. AU was trying to get him on campus this weekend so they can jump more into the race but big to just get a visit. Michigan & Tennessee are considered the top 2 teams right now

Personally I think USC will end up being the pick. He OVs there this weekend

It's like people forget that Marshall torched bama in 2014 and it was almost entirely through the air.

27/43
456 yards passing
3 TD's

Marshall was bigger and faster than Willis

Faster maybe, but I will say about Willis that he's got an incredibly quick first few steps off that read. Marshall was quick, but I'm not sure as quick as Willis. Willis does seem to get up to speed and then kinda die out about 30-40 yards down field. Marshall was 100% all the way. That TD run he had against bama was a thing of beauty.

Willis will probably be about the same size as Marshall in the end. He's listed at 6'2" and Marshall at 6'1", so they're probably right at 6'1", and they have pretty similar body types.

Overall, Gatewood is the most gifted athlete out of the three. A guy with his size that can move like he can is rare. Nix is the best passer(as of now). Willis is the quickest. Should be interesting to see where they all are in 2019.

It's baffling to me why any Auburn fan would argue what qb who has never started a game is better. Do we remember JJ?

Right now, I am team Willis.

I'm excited about Willis and the thought of reestablishing the 2013 offense. But is anybody else concerned that a strict read option 70% run attack just isn't going to work like it did in 2013. I just Bama and UGA are more prepared to stop that offense now, than the were 4 years ago.

Obviously the key to Willis or Gatewood being effective will be their ability to be accurate throwing the ball and keep the defense honest. We don't know if either of them could that effectively yet.

ETA: The 2014 Bama Auburn game is a good example of my point. The second time we played Bama with Marshall they had adjusted their game plan to stop the read option. Need an accurate QB to take advantage of right man to man coverage and torch them through the air.

Gonna work on catching up on some SECCountry articles. The Paw house has been hit hard by the flu this week...

After standout Under Armour performance, Matthew Hill updates upcoming Auburn-Clemson battle (SECCountry)
quote:

Matthew Hill must decide whether he wants to play offense or defense

One thing is certain: Matthew Hill will be a Tiger.

Now, the question lingers: Which one?

Hill, Auburn wide receiver commit, wrapped up a standout Under Armour All-America Game week and will now turn his full attention to recruiting in January. He has been committed to Auburn since the last week of the summer and has never come close to backing off that stance.

As it currently stands, this is how Hill describes his Auburn commitment:

“I’d say it’s pretty strong. Clemson’s going to have to show me a lot of things. And I’d really have to see how I fit into the defense to make me flip. The commitment is pretty strong,” Hill said this week. “Those are the only two schools [Auburn and Clemson] I’m really considering.”

Here are the options laid before Hill:

Auburn wants him as a wide receiver. The Tigers want him to join a group of Anthony Schwartz, Seth Williams and Shedrick Jackson. Clemson likes Hill as a safety, which he is fully capable of playing at a high level in college. Auburn hasn’t had many conversations with Hill about playing safety, but it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out if this becomes an offense-versus-defense decision.

That could be where it’s headed.

“At Clemson, I know I fit into the culture. At Clemson, it’s just like the school I play for now at Brookwood. They’re all about family. They love each other. I feel like I fit in with Clemson regardless,” Hill said. “It’s just I need to figure out if I want to play offense or defense.”

Hill visited Clemson for two games during the 2017 season. That’s the same number of times he went to games in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Coming into the season, the main edge Clemson held was its championship pedigree. But Hill thinks Auburn made major strides this season that he feels will lay a foundation for years to come.

“I also want to go to a school that’s going to play for national championships and just play for championships in general,” Hill said. “Auburn’s coming up there. The defense has been outstanding. But Auburn’s really changed the program around the last couple years. They came from the bottom to the top. They beat two No. 1 teams in one year. That’s a lot to think about.”

For now, multiple sources around this recruitment remain confident Hill sticks with Auburn. In fact, confidence has grown throughout this week as Hill has spent time with Auburn signees/commits Schwartz, Joey Gatewood and Quindarious Monday, who have made him feel much more comfortable about his commitment.

Still, Hill had enough doubts prior to the early signing period to prevent him from signing — despite Auburn’s wishes.

“They wanted me to sign, but I kept telling them I wanted to enjoy the last few weeks of the recruitment process,” Hill said. “Just take my official visits and finish it out. That signing period was when we were in the playoffs, so I wasn’t thinking about that.”

Hill hasn’t set specific dates yet, but he plans to go to Auburn and Clemson in January. He expects he’ll shut down his recruitment once and for all soon after those trips
.

KN believes Hill will visit this weekend & AU will attempt to lock him in for good. We will see. Again the finish to the season was incredibly important for recruiting. Seen a few mention that AU proved to them this year that playing here will give em a chance to win a title

Auburn commits shine in Under Armour Game

Few teams, if any, had a better showing at the Under Armour All-America Game than Auburn.

The Tigers started off well when they landed a commitment from 4-star speedster Schwartz, one of the top wide receivers in the nation. From then on, several Auburn commits put on impressive showings throughout the game.

Here are the top Auburn commit stat lines from the contest.

Gatewood: 52 rushing yards and 1 touchdown; 8-of-16 passing for 79 yards and 1 touchdown; Team Spotlight MVP
Hill: 3 receptions for 23 yards; 1 punt return for 56 yards; 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery
Schwartz: 2 receptions for 49 yards
Coynis Miller: 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack
Monday: 1 tackle

Was a good last week for AU commits in Orlando

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Surprises for Auburn leading up to signing day? (SECCountry)
quote:

Well, I’d like to think you won’t be surprised by much in the recruiting world — assuming you read SEC Country Auburn regularly.

With that said, there are a few key targets leading up to National Signing Day who seem much more likely to land at other schools than Auburn. At this point in the recruiting cycle, the Tigers know the primary prospects they’ll go after in January. But some of those prospects, whether they were to visit or commit, could fall into the “surprise” category.

Here are the names to watch — with more details on each to follow.

5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell
5-star offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere
4-star defensive back Kelvin Joseph

That list doesn’t include Alabama commit Quay Walker or recent UCLA de-commit Olaijah Griffin. It doesn’t have Florida commit Richard Gouraige or offensive tackle William Barnes. Not because I don’t think those signings will happen, but because I wouldn’t classify them as surprises if they ended up at Auburn. Those four seem much more realistic to me that the bullet-pointed trio.

Let’s break down the Auburn connections for Campbell, Petit-Frere and Joseph.

SEC Country first reported earlier this week that Auburn could pick up an official visit from Campbell. The 5-star cornerback has been one of the most impressive prospects at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl this week. Alabama, Georgia and Miami are the front-runners. Clemson and Ohio State fall into the second-tier group.

But Campbell said he’s been in contact with Auburn recruiting coordinator Larry Porter since his state championship game and has contemplated an official visit to the Plains. For now, place Campbell in the surprise visitor category and in the major surprise commitment category. It just doesn’t seem realistic at this time.

As for Petit-Frere, it’s hard to know since he doesn’t reveal much in interviews. The 5-star offensive tackle took the politically correct approach to all questions at the Under Armour All-America Game this week, so it’s unknown where he’ll take official visits in the coming weeks. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him officially visit the Plains, but for now consider that a potential surprise commitment addition to the class.

Finally, there’s Joseph, who has an official visit set for Feb. 2. LSU is the clear team to beat for Joseph and Alabama also is a threat. Auburn is running third right now, so it’ll take a major splash on his official visit to pull in his commitment.

Can mark Petit-Frere off this list as he won't take an OV. Would be shocked if we landed any of these 3 but oddly I think Joseph would be AU's best shot if he were to take his OV in Feb

Auburn early enrollee cornerback Christian Tutt calls Peach Bowl practices an ‘eye-opener’ (SECCountry)
quote:

Early enrollee corner calls bowl practice an ‘eye-opener’

Christian Tutt is known for his speed.

The 4-star cornerback flashes lightning-fast quickness as a defensive back and punt returner. In high school, he flashed that speed as a wide receiver, as well. Tutt expects that speed to translate well to early collegiate playing time.

But even Tutt marveled at the speed of the college game, which he received a small dose of during Auburn’s Peach Bowl practices.

“Bowl practice was turnt. We all got better. Monday and Tuesday was really fast-paced. The speed gets you. But it was really just more of an acclimation period. We weren’t hitting much. Me and Smoke [Quindarious Monday] just went out there and did our thing, went through the drills, were learning the plays,” Tutt said at the U.S. Army Bowl. “It was an eye-opener, especially the receivers. They’re really, really fast, ain’t going to lie to you.”

As Tutt said, most of his role was acclimation-based.

But he matched up a few times with Auburn’s receivers, mostly the freshmen or sophomores. There was one wide receiver, in particular, who caught Tutt’s eye — and exemplifies the epitome of speed among college wide receivers.

“Noah [Igbinoghene], man,” Tutt sad. “We only went up against some of the young guys, but Noah, that boy is stupid fast. Straight up. That was an eye-opener.”

Carlton Davis’ NFL departure has immediate meaning for Tutt.

For starters, he’s going to be called upon to fight for the starting job. That’s a big reason why the Tigers’ defensive coaches wanted Tutt and safety Quindarious Monday on campus some during bowl practices, so they could get acquainted. It also affects Tutt’s number selection. He’ll take on Davis’ No. 6 reputation and try to keep that killer corner mentality on the defense.

“I’ve got to be more physical. I’m physical some already, but I want to be that Carlton physical where you throw a receiver out of bounds. I’ve got to get faster, get stronger,” Tutt said. “Both of us, me and Smoke, [defensive backs] coach [Greg] Brown pulled us to the side and told us our future looked mighty bright. We came in early at a great time. He said we were looking good, learned some more of the concepts. He said we should be ready before spring ball to make pushes for the starting job.”

Tutt moved into his dorm in Auburn on Sunday night. He’ll room with Monday during the spring, but he plans to live with Anthony Schwartz once the newest wide receiver commit enrolls in the summer.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: How many more signees will Tigers take in 2018? (SECCountry)
quote:

Here are the important numbers from the early signing period — and slightly after:

Signed (15): Joey Gatewood, Asa Martin, Shaun Shivers, Kam Stutts, Jalil Irvin, Seth Williams, Shedrick Jackson, Josh Marsh, Zakoby McClain, Michael Harris, Quindarious Monday, Christian Tutt, Jamien Sherwood, Daquan Newkirk and Kayode Oladele.
Committed (6): Matthew Hill, Coynis Miller, Richard Jibunor, Anthony Schwartz, Arryn Siposs and Kolbi Fuqua.

Auburn plans to take 25, so those numbers suggest the Tigers have room for four more.

But that operates under the assumption that all six of the committed (but unsigned) players would sign with Auburn. Jibunor, Schwartz and Siposs — for now, at least — fall into the “confirmed yes” category. Hill and Miller are in wait-and-see mode as they take a few visits elsewhere in January, but for now, I fully expect them to ink with the Tigers on National Signing Day.

Fuqua is the question mark. He didn’t sign during the early signing period despite his initial wish to do so, which indicates Auburn requested he be patient. It’s possible he classifies as a grayshirt candidate if Fuqua is willing to wait. Those are conversations that will be had in January and will be dependent on what other prospects commit to the Tigers.

For now, let’s say Auburn plans to take five more prospects in the Class of 2018. That number could be reduced to four if Fuqua sticks in the class with a 2018 scholarship spot.

5-star DBs give review of prep teammate and Auburn WR commit Anthony Schwartz (SECCountry)
quote:

5-star DBs review WR teammate committed to Auburn

The American Heritage High School football team in Plantation, Fla., has the makings of a Power 5 squad.

It cruised to a state championship in Florida this season. Many of its former players excel at the college level, including the College Football Playoff. The current team has multiple players going to the Division-I level.

Most interesting to Auburn fans: Anthony Schwartz.

The 4-star wide receiver committed to the Tigers on Jan. 4. He’s known for his 10.15-second 100-meter track speed. But if people want to keep questioning whether Schwartz is just a track guy versus a football guy, two of his American Heritage teammates know the answer.

American Heritage has two 5-star defensive backs — Tyson Campbell and Patrick Surtain Jr. — who stood out among the rest at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl last week. Schwartz has matched up regularly with Campbell and Surtain in practices in the last year.

Sure, when Surtain thinks of Schwartz, the first thing he’s conscious of is “that speed,” but he knows how dangerous Schwartz can be in other ways.

“They’re not just getting a speedster; they’re getting a competitor,” Surtain Jr. said. “They’re really getting a good one.”

Campbell, as teammates do, joked at the end of an interview that, of course, he’d win his reps against Schwartz in practice. But his response to the prior question shows how American Heritage uses an iron-sharpens-iron approach with its receivers and cornerbacks.

Schwartz and Campbell had their fair share of head-to-head matchups.

“In practice, we go at it, make each other better better,” Campbell said. “He improves my speed, and I improve his speed. He’s smart, so he makes me improve my patience. We just get each other better each and every time.”

Campbell has considered an Auburn official visit after late-season communications with tight ends coach Larry Porter. Schwartz is already doing his part to encourage that decision. That’s a long shot at this point, but Campbell’s talent is well worth the attempt.

Either way, Campbell knows Auburn is already winning a recruiting battle with a wide receiver steal in Schwartz.

“They’re getting a smart receiver that can pretty much do everything. He can run routes well. He can block. He’s really just an overall team player. He’s going to excel in everything — on the field, in class and in track, as well,” Campbell said. “They’re getting an all-around player.”
