More competition for Alabama when it comes to Emory Jones?

Recruiting changes what seems like every single day.

Last weekend 4-star quarterback Emory Jones, Alabama’s top target at the position, visited Auburn. It was the second time Jones visited Auburn this month. The Tigers weren’t viewed as a legitimate threat to pull him away from Ohio State, which is where he’s committed, but maybe it’s time to include them in the mix.

According to a source close to the Auburn program, the Tigers believe they have about a 50-50 chance to get Jones on board. That other 50 percent? Auburn feels like it’s in a two-team race with Alabama. The Tigers don’t believe Jones sticks with Ohio State. That mirrors what sources at Alabama have told me regarding Jones and the Buckeyes.

Alabama has felt confident that it can flip Jones from Ohio State for several months now, but if Auburn is now in the mix, would that change things? The Tigers’ quarterback room, depth-wise, is more appealing to any quarterback recruit. Auburn has Jarrett Stidham, who is draft-eligible, and freshman Malik Willis. I’ve heard that Stidham has been pegged as a potential 2nd- to 3rd-round pick in the draft this year. That could be good enough for him to leave.

Auburn also has a blue-chip quarterback already committed in the 2018 class. Joey Gatewood, a 4-star prospect from Bartram Trail High School (Jacksonville, Fla.), has been committed to the Tigers for almost 2 years. I’ve heard some talk that Gatewood hasn’t progressed how the Auburn staff thought he would. This is just my opinion now, but I have certainly thought that Gatewood would be better off playing a different position. If he sticks at quarterback, he will need time to develop.

When it comes to Alabama’s quarterback situation, the Tide will have Jalen Hurts, who will be a junior, Tua Tagovailoa, a sophomore, and Mac Jones, a redshirt freshman. It’s not the most appealing situation for a 2018 quarterback recruit, but Jones has told me on multiple occasions that he doesn’t mind redshirting at whichever school he attends.

I am planning on attending Jones’ high school playoff game this Friday, so I hope to have more information on where things stand at that point. But, right now, it’s looking like staff members at both Alabama and Auburn expect one of the nation’s top quarterbacks to end up in the SEC next year.

I have to agree with this. I think Gatewood has more potential as a TE than QB. If he stays at QB, I absolutely hope he proves me wrong. Regardless, of what position he plays, we definitely need a second QB this cycle.

There was a time I might have agreed but I do really think Gatewood has shown some real improvement this season. He's come a long way since early this summer since he's been allowed to focus on only playing a QB. If we can keep Lindsey around, I think Gatewood has a chance to be a really good football player.

But there's now way I see him ready next season. If Stidham leaves early it wouldn't hurt to have someone like Jones competing with Willis for that starting spot. Jones isn't a polished prospect either but he's probably further along than Gatewood

Plus I ain't gonna complain about signing two top 10 QBs

Without a doubt. His completion percentage this year was 70% which is really solid for HS.

So sounds like it will be open season on OM players. Stidham goes pro, we land Patterson who brings AJ Brown with him. Both go pro next season giving way to the Malik show

Landing Stidham for this year and then Patterson for next year would be the recruiting world equal to beating two #1 teams in a three week span. And honestly, if Stidham does leave, would there be a better place than Auburn to go to? All of our WRs are returning, most of our defense is coming back. Our biggest question mark is on the O line, but surely we can figure that out. There is no reason why our team next year can't be just as good as this year's team if we could find a way to land Patterson. We might even be more successful with Patterson than Stidham, because Patterson is a better runner and would thus be a better fit four our offense.

Unfortunately only upcoming seniors will be eligible to play immediately so Shea & AJ Brown aren't options

Some interesting names. No idea if these guys wanna leave or if AU would be interested but just names that stand out

WR Demarcus Lodge
OL Jordan Sims
OL Javon Patterson
DE Breeland Speaks

How good are the two OL players? Are either of them tackles?

They are definitely options. Patterson may need to sit out most of next year anyway with his knee recovery.

Brown may just play one more year and go pro I guess, but we'll see what happens.

Sims is the kid from Homewood who thought we was getting a bama offer... he’s a solid guard, but there could be some he’d feelings there.

Both are interior players I believe. No idea how good or not good they are just know both were guys AU recruited originally

Pretty sure Speaks goes pro. Lodge would be interesting but I think AU is fine at WR especially with class we are bringing in

Auburn hopes to add an elite linebacker beyond Michael Harris, Zakoby McClain (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn’s remaining plan at linebacker in 2018 class

With Zakoby McClain now committed, that finally makes two linebackers in Auburn’s 2018 class.

Michael Harris and McClain are a solid combination. During spring and fall assistant media days, linebackers coach Travis Williams said two was the number the Tigers would definitely get to at the position. He, of course, would like to have as many new, fresh bodies in his unit as possible, which is why Auburn will try to work to add at least one more down the stretch.

From what I’ve been told, Auburn doesn’t plan to step out of its comfort zone to look for the final piece.

There are three linebackers the Tigers have been recruiting all cycle that they will still try to add — Alabama commit Quay Walker, Channing Tindall and JJ Peterson. That’s also the order of confidence Auburn has in landing one of those three linebackers.

Auburn is said to be feeling better about Walker by the day, but a source close to Alabama’s side of the situation doesn’t expect to lose Walker as long as defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt is still there. That one could get interesting if Pruitt were to take a job elsewhere.

Tindall took his official visit for the Iron Bowl and has added Auburn back to his top group. Let’s say the Tigers have a lukewarm confidence level when it comes to stealing Tindall from South Carolina and Georgia.

The final one on the list is Peterson, who said recently that Auburn has backed off its communication. With the season winding down, don’t be surprised to see the Tigers continue their season-long push for Peterson, just in case.

Auburn makes in-home visit to see Luke Ford family

Remember the tweet offensive line coach Herb Hand sent at the beginning of the week? If not, Hand sent an open letter (tweet) to 2018 prospects to “apologize” for the coaching staff’s unavailability for in-home visits this week. Why? Auburn’s preparing for the SEC Championship Game.

Apparently, there are exceptions to every rule.

Auburn tight ends coach Larry Porter traveled to Illinois on Thursday for an in-home visit with the nation’s No. 2 tight end, Luke Ford, and his older brother Noah Ford, who has received a walk-on offer from Auburn as a fullback. This shows the priority of this duo to Auburn’s 2018 class.

Both prospects visited Auburn for the Iron Bowl. Luke Ford’s was an official visit.

Auburn and Georgia are the only two programs that have offered Noah as a walk-on fullback, which is why those two programs are believed to be in a late-cycle battle for one of the most athletic tight ends in the country

Really not a ton of info that hasn't been covered here over the past few days - If you've been following this thread I wouldn't even bother reading the below. KN has been all over this stuff and so has TigerPaw. Cliffs:

- Asa is not going to OV to Alabama. Will move to Auburn on Dec. 17th and room with Gatewood.

- Saivion Smith left his OV without doing interviews - which is the norm for him. AU believes they made up ground, but Bama still leads and Saban visited him on Tuesday.

- Auburn wants one of Quay Walker, Channing Tindall, or JJ Peterson to round out LB recruiting. Right now JLee believes we get Walker, Georgia gets Tindall, and Bama gets Peterson.

- AU made a big move for 4* OT Jerome Carvin, but so did Florida with hiring Mullen - Will visit them Dec. 15-17th.

- Dylan Wonnum will OV to AU, USCe, Florida, LSU, and TN after his season ends and make a decision after that. Pretty much a USCe and AU battle it seems like.

- AU made up a ton of ground on Richard Gouraige the past weekend. AU and Clemson are the biggest threats to the Florida commit - Which is shaky at best at the moment. Not an early enrolled so he'll take his recruitment to the wire.

- AU leads for Jalen Goss but will wait to see what the three above do before taking his commitment.

- Expect 4* DE Kayode Oladele to commit to Auburn on December 12th. Good friends with Richard Jibunor - Both Nigerian and very good friends.

- TE Michael Parker does have an offer from Bama, but that could change should JUCO TE Dominick Anderson commit to the Tide. Most likely would make Parker a gray shirt candidate.

- Justyn Ross believes he can be the next real deep threat for AU. We will have a spot for him no matter what. Will OV to both Bama and AU.

- AU leads for Schwartz and he will OV in January. Obviously Florida is biggest competition.

- 3* CD Daniels a CB from Homewood will be visited by Greg Brown next week. Currently committed to Memphis but an AU offer would likely change that - Good length at 6'2.

- Cameron Taylor who I believe we are recruiting at CB thinks he's close to getting an offer. We will visit him and his teammate Tank Jenkins next week, who is a backup plan for Trey Hill and JLee doesn't think he'll be a part of the class.

That's all. Honestly not as much sunshine as you usually see from JLee with all the winning AU has done recently. I would expect that to change quickly should AU win this weekend.
