Just like last year we when struck out. And it will be down next year too. And the year after that. Then it will be up when we finally sign 3 DTs in a class.

Was genuinely curious about this so made productive use of my lunch time
So using 247 composite rankings and looking only at high school kids, here's a breakdown of 4/5* DL every year since Garner came to AU. I also included AU's top 3 states they target guys in AL/GA/FL. Here's what I got. Remember only looking at guys rated a 4 or 5*
2013 - 58 4/5* DL | 8 GA | 2 AL | 7 FL | 3 sign with AU (Montravius Adams (GA), Carl Lawson (GA), Elijah Daniel (IN))
2014 - 56 4/5* DL | 5 GA | 1 AL | 8 FL | 3 sign with AU (Dontavius Russell (GA), Justin Thornton (AL), Andrew Williams (GA))
2015 - 53 4/5* DL | 9 GA | 3 AL | 4 FL | 2 sign with AU (Byron Cowart (FL), Prince Tega Wanogho (AL))
2016 - 75 4/5* DL | 9 GA | 2 AL | 8 FL | 5 sign with AU (Derrick Brown (GA), Marlon Davidson (AL), Antwuan Jackson (GA), Prince Sammons (OH), Nick Coe (NC))
2017 - 58 4/5* DL | 7 GA | 2 AL | 5 FL | 1 signs with AU (Markaviest Bryant (GA))
2018 - 58 4/5* DL | 5 GA | 2 AL | 5 FL | 0 committed at this time
Thoughts
- Two guys listed as DEs (Tega, Sammons) have switched to OT. Sammons was targeted as an OT
- 2016 was a big year and we took advantage
- This year is down when it comes to DL prospects in our top areas. Last year was a bit down as well in our top areas
- The emergence of Clemson, Smart taking over UGA & FSU's rise has really hurt us in GA
I think saying this crop of DL is down is a fair complaint. 2015 jumps out as the biggest failure to me. 16 kids in our top 3 states and we signed 2 with one turning into a bust and the other moving to OT. We have work to do in this class but Coynis Miller would qualify to make this list if he here to commit.
No idea if these numbers tell us anything or helpful but I found it interesting. Speculate away

FYI According to PM Woody Barrett went 4/13 75 yds with 24 yds rushing and a TD in his JUCO debut

You are forgetting guys like Newkirk who was signed I think, but anyway, he has stayed committed.
Still 5-1/2 months until NSD. If someone wants to complain about Rodney Garner's DL recruiting, then they are either a miserable SOB, or named Brannigan!!
Dear God, you can make a case for every position group out there, but DL would be last.
Yes, we need to sign another large, talented class. We have Newkirk, like I said. Jibunor is there, as is Miller.
Plus, I will bet Garner signs at least one kid we haven't heard of yet, that kills it this year.

Not a 4* which is why he's not above and is now a JUCO which I didn't include in this. Focus was on high school players rated 4/5* or higher which seems to be the main complaint

4-13 for 73 yards passing
19 carries for 24 yards and 1 TD

Given that Herb Hand brought Sammons into the fold specifically as an OT, we shouldn't count him as a DE but a 4* OT
Tega can be included since we seem to have been open to him staying along the DL

That's fair but then I would have to figure out if any other DEs in all of those listed were also moved elsewhere to make the numbers fair. I just threw this together and went by what 247 has listed. Good chance there are some guys that committed elsewhere that ended up not qualifying or moving to a different position. It's far from an exact study but gives an idea of the talent pools for the time Garner has coached here

KN says depending on the weather AU might send 1-2 coaches to the Tucker/Colquitt County game tonight. AU commit Michael Harris plays for Tucker as done AU OT target Dylan Wonnum. JJ Peterson plays for Colquitt and their QB is a possible backup option. Also some 2019 and 2020 guys out there as well
Also coaches can talk to 2019 guys now. Seen a few retweet edits from AU

Lame, you want to recruit like a top dog you can't be afraid of a little weather.

Have no fear, T-WILL apparently isn't scared of rain and visited Tucker today home of Michael Harris and Dylan Wonnum. Expected to be at game tonight. All according to KN

Finally got a chance to talk to Justin tonight, be surprised if he didn't commit by morning.
