Anxious to see what kind of reviews Ashley gets at Under armour this week. His HS competition is trash. Will be interesting to see how he fairs this week against some of the best pass rushers in the land

False. It's not great but his team played #8 DeMatha, MD twice (barely lost both; he did well), IMG Academy, goes against Texas A&M DE commit Tyree Johnson and a Maryland DE commit on his team in practice every week.

But yes it'll be good to see him against elite comp. He's athletic for his size, has gotten his hips down and footwork better this year but needs some college S&C before he hits the field.

Screw that. We need him to play next year. We have signed all these flex guys the last few years who all ended up being guards. We need at least one tackle next year.

Saw him in person, his lower body is there, his upper is what needs some gym time. He could add another 20 of muscle with his frame. If he follows the conditioning plan AU sends him after NSD, I could see him pushing for time.

Under Armour All-America Game preview (247)
quote:

TARGETS

-BUCK, Markaviest Bryant: The 4-star pass rusher is Auburn’s top prospect at that spot. Right now, Auburn and Georgia stand out from the pack. The Tigers will have him on campus Jan. 20 for his official. Bryant had 13 sacks in 2016 — not bad considering he’s still fairly new to playing on the edge. Bryant is extremely quick and athletic, but still a little raw. This should be a good challenge for him, not to mention a good chance to go home with some knowledge. Look for him to improve throughout the week as he gets his feet a little wet.

-CB/S Deangelo Gibbs: The 4-star defensive back from Georgia recently made an official visit to Auburn but the Tigers seem to be running third at best with Georgia as the favorite and Alabama possibly close behind.

-OT, Kai-Leon Herbert: The 4-star Michigan commit from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage plans to officially visit Auburn the weekend of Jan. 13. His commitment doesn’t seem solid, but Auburn probably is sitting in fourth behind the Wolverines, Florida and Miami.

-CB, Chris Henderson: The Miami, Fla., product officially visited Auburn during the season, but was always a long shot. Now that secondary coach Wesley McGriff is leaving to be defensive coordinator at Ole Miss, one would think Auburn’s chances are below 5 percent. Florida appears to be the team to beat.

-DE, Ryan Johnson: A standout from Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul’s Episcopal, Johnson probably is one of Auburn’s top two or three overall targets. Not only is he talented, but he can play multiple positions. That gives him added value. Auburn is battling Alabama, Stanford and Texas, among others, and it will be a dogfight. But the Tigers are recruiting Johnson as hard as anyone —and he grew up a Tigers fan. The 6-feet-3, 240-pound Johnson is listed on the Under Armour Roster at end. He’ll be facing some truly elite tackles, including Alabama 5-star commit Alex Leatherwood in practice — and Ashley, the Auburn commit, in the game.

-DE, Tyree Johnson: The Texas A&M commit is a high school teammate of Ashley’s. Auburn recently offered and visited him during the contact period. He’ll officially visit Jan. 13.

KN also had a VIP slideshow on who AU's next commit could be. Here's summary

1.) 3* FB Chase Lasater - Plans to visit January 20th and it would be a shock if he didn't commit after it. Former Michigan commit

2.) 3* OT Jordan Tucker - Former Tennessee commit that is getting a hard eval from the staff. Sounding likely he will get an offer and if he does we become the favorite to land him

3.) 4* DE Ryan Johnson - AU/BAMA/STAN battle however it's probably more of an AU/STAN battle as Bama has guys ahead of him they expect to land like LaBryan Ray. If he gets admitted to Stanford this will be a 50/50 race but he grew up AU fan (kiss of death) and Garner is recruiting him hard

4.) 3* WR Tamorrion Terry - FSU is current leader however they still haven't offered while AU has. He's very close with Kodi Burns and Jarrett Stidham's commitment helps. Still waiting on recent ACT score

5.) 4* LB Tyler Taylor - Still not certain we will push for him after dead period but if we do we have a great chance as he loves Travis Williams. Oklahoma & LSU are also after him

6.) 4* S Devon Hunter - Apparently we had become the favorite to land Hunter before McGriff left to be DC at Ole Miss. Now things are murky but AU is still in the hunt especially if he likes our new DB coach. Plans to officially visit AU on Jan 20th which is our big recruiting weekend

Scout Takes a Look at Some of the Top Regional Storylines Heading in to the Under Armour Game (Scout)
quote:

Southeast

DeAngelo Gibbs will enter the Under Armour All-America game week uncommitted and enrolling at a school just a week after the game. Gibbs only took three official visits — Alabama, Auburn and Georgia. Auburn appears to be on the outside looking in, and Tennessee, a school at one time considered a favorite has faded, and it appears to be down to Alabama and Georgia. The Crimson Tide have made a big push, so can they steal him out of Georgia's backyard? He never gives anything away in interviews, he has kept some guessing, so when his announcement on January 1, 2017 is the biggest storyline out of the South.

quote:

East

What happens with five-star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley, who committed to Auburn in May when he was at Orlando Dr. Philips, but now is at Washington (D.C.) St. John's and giving Maryland a very hard look? Ashley has a pair of teammates committed to Maryland, he is really listening the Terps' pitch of the DMV (D.C, Maryland, Virginia) to Maryland in keeping the talent home. There are three Auburn commits in the game, and each will have a chance to grab Ashley's ear and make sure he is solid with the Tigers.

What defensive tackle Alec Jackson's commitment means for Auburn (AL.com)
quote:

How it happened: Even though Jackson raved about his USC official visit, this was more about when and not if.

Jackson is a big Auburn fan. His mother, Carter said, is a bigger Auburn fan. He wasn't wearing the Auburn apparel as much at the beginning of the season, but that changed as Auburn picked up the pace in its recruitment of Jackson at the beginning of the month.

"He was always around with an Auburn sweatshirt on," Carter said. "Early in the year, you didn't see him with it on as much (at one point, Auburn wasn't in his top five). When they came back around, (assistants) Coach (Rodney) Garner and Coach (Kevin) Steele came by the school and had an in-home visit with him, that pretty much sewed everything up.

"During the thick of the season, sometimes the schools and coaching staffs have so much going on with themselves. It's hard with the game planning and recruiting all these players. They never wavered."

Jackson planned to take three visits in January before making his decision, but gave his mother a Christmas present with his commitment.

Carter said that Jackson being around five Auburn commitments during practice for the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game also influenced Jackson to commit sooner. At one point, cornerback Malcolm Askew was in Jackson's ear before an interview with a TV station.

With some gym time wouldn't it be nice if he developed a nice little Tyron Smith frame???

UGA bud of mine said that it's looking good for Auburn with Bryant. With Bellamy and Lorenzo Carter coming back for their Senior years, along w/ Chubb and Michel, they now can only take 25 guys in this class where they originally planned on taking 29 if they could. They have 20 commits and 5 spots left so this might not be a guy they have room for. Even w/o that, he said Bryant was worried about how stable the DC/DL coach situation was at Auburn and now that we're over that hurdle he's really starting to like the idea of being at Auburn.

This would be a major close if we somehow picked him up and maybe Aubrey Solomon.

Confidence seems to be rising however his teammate and 2018 prospect 4* LB Quay Walker basically said the other day he's going to UGA. I think that final official visit will be huge. If we can nail that we got a shot but I would still project him to UGA right now

I just don't see how we get both of those guys. No one would be allowed to complain ever again about Garner's recruiting if he did that

I am optimistic on both but right now we have some work to do to pull it off. The good news is on the Solomon front I am already seeing Bama guys started to mention AU as a contender. Hoping this is Derrick Brown part 2

Ryan Johnson, Markaviest Bryant, Aubrey Solomon and Devon Hunter could make this class elite. I would be shocked if we landed all 4, my hope is we can at least get 2 of the 4 and finish in the top 10. January 20th is gonna be a big weekend for us
