Talking with a Miami assistant today while I was visiting Hoover High School and we were talking about the corners from the Miami area. This assistant said the Miami staff considered Carlton Davis the best cornerback in Miami this year.

Legit 6-foot-2. If Auburn can flip him, it sounds like Davis would jump near the top of the list in terms of impact players.

Size-Strength-Speed

Davis is a physical run/pass defender with the size, strength and top end speed/range for the defensive safety position at the power conference level of play; his frame appears capable of supporting additional bulk over time.

Instincts/Recognition

This is a defensive back with outstanding instincts who isn't fooled by trick plays; his key and diagnosis reaction skills get him in position to make plays vs. the run and pass; we see a disciplined football player who takes correct pursuit angles to the football.

Coverage Skills

Shows the athleticism and playing speed to play both man and zone coverage; is very effective covering deep and to the outside from a middle third alignment; has range to the sideline along with very good break on balls thrown underneath. We like his man coverage athleticism; press, mirror and disrupt receivers releasing off the line; opens his hips to turn and run with outside speed while showing the burst needed to make up ground. Possesses high intercept and pass break up ball skills.

Run Support

This guy is a tough customer who attacks downhill when defending against the run from a deep alignment; is a hitter who needs to clean up his tackling technique. Although we applaud his attempt to make big hits, we see too much roll and low effort which allows for cheap yards after contact. This is an aggressive run support prospect who has the frame and toughness needed to play close to the line of scrimmage.
