Clint was Gus's recruit
do you actually remember Clint's recruitment?... he was being recruited by Tuberville's staff and didn't have an offer from them... he was a last minute pick up for Chizik and the new staff.
He did not have an offer from Tulsa, where Gus was OC... he was not being actively recruited by Gus until after he was hired, two months before NSD.
To use clint mosely against is laughable and reeks of an agenda.

Gus could have helped him in a lot of ways Season 2011. He did not.
Kid has been playing football for over a decade (most likely) before Gus ever had a day to coach him.
And you're telling us that Malzahn was supposed to fix all his mental problems in less than 5 months of coaching?

Gus recruited Clint. Clint was recruited by Gus. It is what it is.

Not an overly difficult job when the QB in question is Cam Newton. C'mon.

Yeah, people forget Cam was not special the first 3-4 games of that season. The MSU game was hard to watch.

But the fact is, Clint was Gus's recruit.mbut he was Gus's boy
Stop being a moron. He was not Gus' boy, he wasn't even Gus' #1 QB for hsi own signing class

Point is, he wasn't fixed.
When you have a guy like Nick Marshall, you usually don't try and fix the rusty 1984 clunker in your cray uncle's garage.
Whether or not Keihl was ever fixable is not the point, Nick Marshall took over so we never got to see if he was.

my advice to mockbee is to quit reading bama message boards or listening to finebaum. What Gus has done in relatively short times with both Cam and Marshall is nothing short of a minor miracle. Did both guys have the physical tools?... of course. Were both guys put in an incredible system that maximized their talents?... yes.
i'll buy the -- not enough information yet -- argument on Gus's QB development (though I think it's pretty weak given the circumstances)... but failure is fuking laughable.

Y'all want to have both ways. The QBs that have done well, Cam and Nick (and Todd, some) is because of Gus; but the one's that suck, Gus had nothing to do with, they were defective to begin with, etc whatever.
I stand behind one simple proposition: let's see what Gus does with Nick. This is fair, is it not? To have a returning starter who was, to put it mildly, a suspect thrower?
Nick's doing well so far this Spring. Is that Nick, or is that Gus? Gus/Rhett?

we could say the same about your flimsy argument... also look at the QBs outside of his time at Auburn... the guys at Tulsa or Aplin at Ark State.
bottom line is gus has had varying degrees of successful QBs everywhere he's been... Yes, clint and frazier were busts... any OC who's been at the D1 level a decade is going to have a couple.

In the 8 years he has been in college football he has had only one season that went poorly at the QB position. You are using that one season to judge his whole body of work. And now your argument is we should just wait and see what happens next year and that will tell us how good Gus is with QBs. Which is ridiculous even if Nick wins the Heisman. One year does not define a coach but looking at his body of work let's you know something. I would say going 7/8 on QBs is a pretty telling stat

What all of your arguments boil down to is this: Gus is a great OFFENSIVE Coach. He has not yet shown he is a great QB coach. My point is, and it goes back to the beginning of this shite, is that he hasn't had the chance yet. He will get that chance beginning with Nick. And then JJ, and then Sean, etc. It's really pretty simple.

What doesn't make sense to me is how he has not shown he is a great QB coach when you look at all the improvements QBs under him have had from their previous seasons. But I think we are just arguing ourselves into circles which is pretty common in the offseason

He literally had a QB win the Heisman and was chosen #1 in the draft. Not to mention said QBs greatest year of football was under Gus. You can't just throw that info out the window.

You said 'failed', which made no sense... if you would've just stuck with the above from the beginning, this probably doesn't make you look dumb.

Gus has been at AU for 4 years and in 4 years he had 3 good QB years. Even 2011 wasn't horrible considering our OL problems (4 new OL)
Additionally, the only year he struggled (2011) was when he didn't have any of his #1 QB recruits that weren't FR

But! To your point: Gus has a great system, a great offense. He's job-hopped and, consequently, hasn't had a whole lot of time with any of his QBs. Hopefully he will here at Auburn.

Thanks for stopping by Mock, everybody completely missed my "Reminder" of how good Cass/Frost look.
Just forward me the address to send the check. Will you be available the next time I step in it?
I am sure I won't need you but...

As crazy as the Evans/Radio things were I don't see Gus being ready to sever ties that quickly. It's just not a prudent move.

Auburn High will always be pro Auburn. This is just probably a warning shot to let the coaches at AU it won't be tolerated. It isn't really severing ties
