Recruiting obviously isn't going as well as we'd like.

It seems like the coaches are focused on winning on the field rather than on recruiting trail. Perhaps it's not a bad philosophy. If AU finishes strong and gets as far as the Sugar Bowl, I think that will bring kids in.

Fixing shite on the field was priority #1 for them, and rightfully so. I'm sure the staff is doing everything behind the scenes for recruiting...I just wanted to hear some interest from new high-profile recruits at this point. Getting a win against UGA would probably help out a great deal.

where would you like it?...
I'd like some more high school talent particularly OL, WR, DL, and S.
My main point though is when people start throwing out the "filling needs" and "diamonds in the rough" crap it's a sure sign things aren't great.
Also, not sure how you can say this class is better (on paper) than Gene's first full class.

You think "filling needs" is crap?

It's now "frivolous" to sign as many good players as possible? That's a good one.
Recruiting obviously isn't going as well as we'd like.

As of Oct 31st of 2009 (chizik's first year) we had 16 commits (two were kickers)... Malzahn's current class is well ahead (based on player ranking) than Chizik's first class.
So yes... it is better and is going to be better.

It may end up being better on the field, since a lot of the guys from that class were befallen by tragedy, didn't pan out, or ended up in jail, but on paper it won't be nearly as solid as that class was unless some guys start coming out of nowhere.

this year is going better than Chiz's first year (started off slow, closed strong),
this was the original point I was making... I am fully aware of where that class finished (and subsequently where it started).
The chicken little mentality based on where we are right now in recruiting is stupid, imo. A first year coach starting "slow" but still ending with a very good class isn't unprecedented at Auburn.

No but when it is the first thing used to describe a recruiting class it's basicalyly a nice way of saying it's average.

Look at the dates of the commitments... in October of Chizik's first year we were in worse shape than we are now, while having a worse season...

I haven't seen any chicken littles. Just some people who realize our recruiting class, as it currently stands, is not good enough to get us back to the elite in this conference.
Doesn't mean it can't change over the next 3 months or that one average class is going to ruin us but if we're being honest I think we all would have expected/hoped for a little more given our staff.

But who are we even still in on that we have a really good shot for that is going to get this class to that level? Evans maybe?
I can't think of any other big time recruit left that we have a better than 50% for as it stands today.

Our biggest recruiting weekends are in front of us... both the UGA and Bama weekends are gonna be huge. Also, this staff showed last year that it can close the deal in January.
From an overall talent and roster standpoint, we a in significantly better shape than when either Tuberville or Chizik took over... there's no reason for us to go out and take 30+ commitments... we will get ours, I have no doubts... some guys that no one is even talking about right now (like an elijah daniel).

I actually think we are in a very similar position to when Chizik took over roster wise. Extremely strong junior class that just lacked direction and a QB.
We saw what happened when we got that direction and QB in 2010 and while Marshall is no Cam based on what we have coming back next year and the fact most every other SEC contender will be losing their QB we could do big things next year.

First: Articles have been put out saying that a number of recruits are starting to pick up interest in Auburn after our start. We may not be in the thick of it right now but that comes with time. Still a few months till NSD and our biggest recruiting weekends are ahead of us
Second: With the senior season wrapping up, new players (see Chris Jones last year) will pop up once new highlight film comes out. We will be a trendy team as mentioned above

It's similar, but we're still in much better shape... in 2009, we had absolutely no depth on either the OL or DL... the spring game was embarrassing with out 2nd string lines. We're also much better off at the QB position. The roster is much more balanced among all positions than it was in 2009. We also haven't had the same high number of attrition that many first year coaches have.
Malzahn inherited a good bit of talent... we're in much better shape to not have a drop off similar to what we experienced in 2011, imo.
