I think this would be incorrect had the Falcons held their lead in Super Bowl 51.

But if the Falcons draw 10x the viewers for their games, have higher merchandise sales, how are they not the most important?

More people watch them (and I mean WAYYYYY), and they bring in more money. There is no other metric.

When we were kids in the 90s, the Braves were "it." The generation below us grew up on Michael Vick, Matt Ryan, and Julio.

A lot of it has to do with the fact baseball is far less popular with the youngest generation of kids. Hell, the NFL and MLB are losing market share to the NBA and video games now. Just because it was the big-time when we were growing up, doesn't mean it's the same now.

Impossible to compare viewership of MLB vs. NFL. NFL is a bigger deal these days and has been for a while, but the # of games and the nature of the television deals make it pretty useless even if you wanted to.

The Braves are the most successful team for the city. They're also the best connected to the City's history. That could change, in part because black Atlantans care about the Falcons and they're half the city, and in part because Blank has done a good job reincorporating the Falcons into the city fabric.

But for the time being, I think the Braves are the most integral. Some of that is probably just being romantic about baseball. A kid going to his first Braves game is pure Americana and any trip to Suntrust will show the family-baseball thing is still alive and well. But beyond that, I very rarely encounter natives who are diehard Falcons fans who will tell you about being at a given Falcons game, etc. It's always a fleeting, half hearted sort of thing. At neighborhood gatherings in Buckhead (and when we lived in midtown), there was just a more perpetual interest in discussing the Braves over the Falcons.

Admittedly, I think both fan bases are pretty casual. With the Braves, like other MLB, you have games close to daily for like 7 months so it's pretty natural that people rarely come off as diehard baseball fans. For the Falcons it's just sort of this endless waiting for the franchise to get over the hump and give you an excuse to be a serious fan.

I do wonder if they were told to "hold on" until the MBS negotiations were done.

Probably. Guess they were too impatient and really needed that taxpayer cash in a hurry.

quote:

The city chipped in a large chunk for the half a billion dollar State Farm renovation, so clearly there was cash to share.

That renovation was more like $200 million (city share was $150 mill). Still another screwing of taxpayers.

Same sources.

If you're referring to the GWCCA hotel-motel tax, state law prohibited that revenue (and still does) from being used on non-GWCCA facilities (which the Ted is). Even if the city and the Braves wanted to tap into it, that would've required the General Assembly to pass legislation authorizing it.

quote:

The city could have chosen both paths, but decided to just empty the pocketbook for one.

Empty what pocketbook? MBS had an existing funding source which didn't affect city residents.
