It would be very difficult for Arkansas to hold the Ole Miss offense in check the rest of the second half.
The bigger issue was the 42-6 lead wasn't good enough to make them quit. Slowing it down and chewing up the clock would be what good coaches would do. However Arkansas struggles offensively sometimes in the second half and a vulnerable defense gives teams a chance to get back into games.

I don't remember the last time Arkansas had such a tremendous lead that the backups played the second half.

I know a quote from Bobby Knight that said that coaches that listen to people from the stands will end up sitting with them.

Up 42-6, the problem is their D knew KJ wasn't running anymore. Allows the D to focus on the RB. Briles can't seem to figure out how to add a 3rd option for the D to read. Why not bring AJ across the formation and show a jet sweep off the off tackle run.
I don’t think it was that. I think it was Green and Dubinion aren’t the power back Rocket is. And Rocket was on the bench. Because when Rocket did come in for a few plays he moved the sticks. Which to me, seems like you put Rocket in and keep getting first downs just so you can keep the clock rolling at the very least.

one 3 & out running the ball all three times burns 2 minutes or more (minus the hypothetical of the opponent calling a timeout)
throw in a first down or two and you've got conceivably 4 to 6 minutes burned up
on one possession
all head coaches know these percentages as they've all known them for decades
fans squealing that the head coach doesn't know what he's doing is just fans who love embarrassing themselves

Listen, I get that you spaz out when anyone says something mildly negative about the team. But the defense absolutely stopped playing hard. It is in fact possible to see out a game where you have a big lead and not give up 700 yards.

I mean, anyone saying we needed to air it out or go balls out up 42-6 entering the 4th quarter is just looking for message board style points.
Y’all forget when A&M blew a similar huge lead against UCLA in 2017. They were up 44-10 with 4 minutes left in the 3rd, yet Sumlin kept stupidly throwing it and going tempo, and they kept giving the ball back to UCLA and Josh Rosen who proceeded to score 5 straight TDs. If they’d have kept it on the ground, or not gone tempo, they’d have held on and UCLA wouldn’t have had enough clock.
Every coach worth a damn does what Sam did, especially when he’s got an injury riddled QB and needs to get to bowl eligibility.
Does it make the win count for more if we’d have won 49-14 or 52-20? Still counts as 1 in the W column, which is all I care about.

The difference is, they at least try to get first downs. It didn’t seem like we were even trying to do that. We ran what looked like to be the same play 3 times in a row then would punt.

I guess I’m not as worried about the rushing yards and points as most people. We were up 36 points going into the 4th. If lane wants to run it that’s fine, I’m sure our coaching staff had no problems letting them do that. they weren’t coming back from the deficit running the ball and chewing clock. Lane did us a favor all for some stat padding, that game was never in doubt.

But that’s not really true.
On our second to last drive in the 3rd quarter, we threw the out route to Knox on 3rd and short instead of simply trying to pound it up the middle. Problem was it was read well by OM and wasn’t a good throw by KJ.
On our last drive in the 3rd quarter, we threw it several times. We threw the long pass attempt to Landers where we drew a PI call, and KJ threw a wheel route to AJ Green on 3rd down where Green didn’t look back for the ball. We also had a 3rd and 1 on that drive where we ran the Tebow play with KJ that was stuffed but ultimately didn’t matter because OM committed the dumb personal foul. I’d say running our injured QB into the line of an SEC opponent is going for it, wouldn’t you?
It’s not like we just went belly dive x3 trying to simply burn clock. We ran our typical offense in the 3rd quarter, the only difference being that we sat Sanders after his long TD.

That’s not what bothers me, what bothers me was not being able to get first downs so we could ice the game. If we are going to run, why not put two backs out there, so they don’t have it zeroed in on one. Rocket was still getting 5-9 a run when they did put him in. I know you don’t want to get him hurt but both Green and Dubinion with two tight ends would have been better than still spreading them out and running it up the middle. KJ wasn’t going to run it being hurt off and on.

That happens when you are a rhythm team and you have stopped everything just to eat clock, which they should have, I guess I’m just more concerned we couldn’t just get a couple more first downs to eat more clock.

I guess it just comes back to the line has been pretty disappointing since Sam got here. Got worked in a few games, and when we need to salt the game away, we can’t really.

We actually did get a first down at the end of one of those drives (believe it was the second) via a Dubinion run but got called for illegal motion or formation. That backed us up out of FG range, and when we punted it was the one that Fletcher backspun at the 2.
If that Dubinion first down holds, we likely net at least a FG and even potentially wipe out one of OM’s garbage time touchdowns because of the clock we’d have eaten.

If he would’ve gotten hurt in a 30 point game this board would’ve been calling for Pittman’s job. I know we have a lot of battered fan syndrome fans but that game never in doubt after going up 42-6.

It didn't help that Ole Miss didn't quit.

Exactly.
I was ready to have Pittman and Briles not just fired but arrested when KJ was in the game late against BYU when we were up 3 scores and he took the nasty tumble that gave him a stinger and/or worsened his clavicle issue.
If we lose a game with a 42-6 lead heading into the 4th quarter, just shut the program down and host tractor pulls and monster truck rallies at DWRRS from now on.
