I'm not sure we'll have the players to go man to man for most of the games for a year or two so I'd love to see a zone defense, but that comes with the assumption that the new coach would improve the current roster's ability to rotate defensively. They were definitely not always the most crisp part of our gameplay.

but when was the last time you saw a screen set properly against a zone to open up a three or mid range jumper?

You will see it when Syracuse goes against some of the better coaches in the ACC. Syracuse is 4-18 over the last 5 years against the best three coaches in the ACC. As stone said though, they can feast on teams that aren't prepared. Their average teams will make runs in the tournament because of it.

Syracuse gets brought up alot when zone defenses are mentioned and rightly so but Scott Drew also had some good runs at Baylor running the zone. He just recruited some of the longest players in Texas and made two Eight eights and two Sweet 16s in the last 10 years.

There isn't any reason why a coach can't have a team that can play man to man, match up zone, 2-3, 1-3-1, box and 1, triangle and 2, and 1-1-3 zone.

The only reason is a coach's refusal to do so, high school coaches all over the country are able to implement these defenses, it literally takes a couple practices to install and actually practicing it to implement.

Speaking of Drew, what about his brother who was supposedly recruiting his arse off this year leading many in the media to pick them as the dark horse in the SEC, for sure tourney team, then the team suffers an injury which leads to 0 and however many games played in the SEC?

Obviously any team that loses its best player is going to suffer a lot but I really lost some respect for Bryce in terms of coaching this year. No reason they should have been that bad.

I want to see less full court pressure. When I see full court pressure I want to see HARD traps at the baseline.

Mostly I want to see our defense fall back and mix up three looks; man, 2-3, 1-3-1. And I want to see a LOT of hard traps in the half court defense.

You can still generate a lot of turnovers just being more creative and disciplined on defense. At the end of the day, Mike is going to lose his job because he got comfortable.

The biggest problem with Mike has been recruiting and player retention. I agree he's not exactly an x's and o's guy. But when you have guys who can't hit a jump shot !!! There is NO excuse for that at this level or at a top 25 program. Which is what we are, we're just being dragged down by a crappy coach. I grew up dreaming of playing basketball. I was told I was too white and too short. But I got in the gym and worked my arse off. Shooting over and over and over. By the time I was a Jr I made the team. As a senior I made the all conference team. I was far from a natural talent. But had a coach who would take the time to help me. I could hit free throws with my eyes closed. Does it seem like Gabe is getting that kind of coaching ? Doesn't to me. If you aren't going to teach all of your kids to shoot the ball then you better be a damned good recruiter. Mike is neither.

I see it like he has failed in recruiting because he isn't focused on it enough. He's too comfortable. You gotta recruit like your job is at stake.

I think the dude is a hell of a good coach, but roster management has been poor.

I guess the answer to the dilemma is you gotta keep recruiting as if half the dudes on your team could leave at a moment's notice. May occasionally even have to gray shirt players. Seems ridiculous, but that's the only answer I can see. You shouldn't ever be in a position to be held hostage by a player or two eight years into your tenure.

I'm ready to see him go. Or at least put a plan in motion to address the recruiting issue in a significant way. Which would probably mean going out and hiring new assistants. Which he doesn't want to do. So he probably needs to go.

Honestly boar, I don't feel like he really is a hell of a coach. The guy has an NBA lottery pick and a record shooting three point shooter. To go along with Mason Jones !! He also had KES and Sills and lets not forget Chaney.. He squandered that much talent !!! Are you kidding me !! Gabe and Bailey should have only seen the floor when Gafford was in foul trouble or needed a breather. You teach your skill guys to play defense during games all year. Mike put experienced lesser skilled guys out there ahead of the ballers all season long... He's an idiot and needs to go. I can only imagine what a quality coach could have down with this rooster this year. What a waste.
