Do you think he meshes well with Morris' offense?
Defenses don't "mesh" with offenses. A good defense is a good defense. Every defense is going to have better stats when paired with a pro-style, hold-on-to-the-ball style of offense, though.

The rumor is that we’re essentially playing a game of chicken with A&M. If we hire him away then we have to pay a buyout, as I understand it, but if they fire him first then they have to pay it. Fisher is going to have to let him go at some point after the bowl game so we wait.
Someone else can possibly speak to the accuracy of that statement.

My only question is why have we waited this long? He knew he wasn't going to be retained?
Don't know the exact details/numbers but I'm pretty sure he has a buyout that drops after the year is over
I could be wrong though

Is Jimbo not interested in keeping him? Weren’t they at LSU together?
Nevermind they didn’t overlap

It looks like all of this was covered prior to the 2017 season. A "for cause" firing (vague on what this is) results in no buyout.

So, if this is true. Why have we waited for so long?

Under those circumstances, the defensive coordinator is still required to look for another job to offsets the remaining amount of the contract that A&M owes him. However, the new deal specifically states Chavis has agreed to make "reasonable and diligent efforts to obtain employment with compensation at market value." A&M also has the right to request evidence of Chavis' efforts to find another job, a stipulation that was mentioned in the original deal. Mediation to any potential disputes between both sides regarding a future buyout was also added.

Bad defense at A&M with recruits we'll never get. Hooray.

Agreed but I do think that you can argue a more aggressive defense is better paired with a up-tempo offense that is effective because in theory you are getting the ball back more often but also allowing quicker scores by the opposing offense.
Even in that situation, the defense is going to have mediocre/bad numbers but you are hoping for a high turnover rate.

Bad? What’s that make ours?

Best > good > average > bad > Arkansas

So an improvement, good deal

I've given this some more thought since last night.
I think it could be a good thing for a couple reasons.
1) Morris and Sumlin run different offenses. Sumlin is a run and gun / air raid guy while Morris seems to be more of a uptempo wishbone guy. Being uptempo doesn't necessarily mean quick strike. If Morris can produce 8 - 10 play drives Chavis' numbers will improve over what he had at A&M.
2) and maybe more importantly... How much of A&M's problems under Sumlin were cultural? See the pimp stick fiasco. See Johnny Manziel. See persistent rumors of head coach being a staggering drunk. Point is, Chavis may have been hamstrung by a number of things.
Let's hope he is able to get us closer to where he was at LSU than at Aggy.
ETA: The most important thing going forward for this team, no matter who the defensive coordinator is, is that the offense doesn't turn the ball over. The entire scheme' success, or lack thereof, is predicated on taking care of the ball.
If the defense can create turnovers, it will be huge.

I don't think he has to mesh with the offense. Just get three and outs.
The only issue with a 'score fast and often' offense (if that indeed happens) is the lack of recovery time between series for the defense, which increases the need for decent depth.

A&M's offense wasn't that great when Chavis was there. They had tons of quick three and outs.
What do you think we're going to have? Quick three and outs are a corollary of this type of offense.

I can't find data for this season, but in 2016 SMU went three and out more frequently than Texas A&M.
SMU went three and out on 23.84% of their possessions while Texas A&M went three and out on 22.28% of their possessions.

Not setting himself up well with this hire.
