Seeing people on social media say they witnessed it and others with friends in White Hall that confirmed it.

Sad day

Terrible news.

I'll never forget him hiding the ball behind his back before throwing strikes.

As a guy who came of age to the Citadel and getting our heads kicked in by Miami in Little Rock, RM provided me with the great sliver of hope I’d never had.

I still think we probably play for a National Title if he’s able to lead the comeback against Bama in 2010.

Such a tragic loss for a guy who was just hitting the upslope of his coaching career.

Update: We have confirmation of next of kin notification. The victim is identified as 35-year old Ryan Mallett of Arkansas. We send our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones in his tragic passing.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent drowning that claimed the life of a tourist in the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon.
First responders were called to the beach behind 775 Gulf Shore Drive in Destin around 2:12 p.m.
A group of people in the water near the second sandbar had reportedly been struggling to make their way back to shore.
One of the individuals, an adult male, went under and lifeguards say he was not breathing when pulled out.
Lifesaving measures were immediately undertaken but the man was pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room.
We do not have confirmation at this time of next of kin notification.

Terrible news. Ryan was always one of my favorite Razorbacks. Prayers for his family, friends, and his players and staff at White Hall.

The Rip currents along the Gulf coast the last couple of weeks have been worse than I can remember. If you, family, or friends are heading down please obey the Flags and instructions from Beach Patrol and lifeguards. As many people have drowned trying to save swimmers in distress as those in trouble. Red or Double Red Flag means stay out of the water. This is not just a suggestion......

I was doing okay until Bobby's tweet. That got me choked up.

I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of one of the greatest competitors I’ve had the privilege of coaching. Not only was Ryan a great leader and teammate on the field, he was a thoughtful and generous person off the field as well.

Personally, I know how much he loved being a hog. I along with thousands of others will always remember 4th and 3 in Little Rock against LSU when he made the perfect pass to Joe to seal the win!

My heart goes out to his family and to all of Hog nation tonight. Gone but never forgotten. May you rest in peace buddy. Love you!

Mallett makes the 10th person to drown in the last month along the Florida panhandle, due to the abnormally bad rip currents.

There were 2 fathers that drowned on father's day alone in the Destin area, trying to save their kids.

Crazy stuff.

We beat Auburn if he didn't go down. Tyler Wilson did well but those two costly interceptions late in the fourth quarter were rookie mistakes that Mallett wouldn't have made.

Auburn had the best player in the nation that year but Arkansas had the best team in the SEC with such a versatile offense.

What a sad day. Prayers for his family. I've never seen anyone with that much arm talent, but it was the little things that he did so well that helped the Razorback offense to be as potent as it has ever been. The way he stretched out to the running back on play action roll outs. The way he hid the ball on play action. The way he looked off defenders. And of course the way he could both throw with touch, or leave a smoke trail behind the ball, depending on what the situation called for.

Rest in peace young man. You were taken from us way too soon.
