Surely Long already knows all this though, right?
I'm not suggesting you're wrong, but it seems to be preaching the choir a bit telling the guy who just hired an NFL head coach and a back-to-back-to-back Big10 champion here that we can attract big name coaches.

I just realized that this line of thinking makes me feel like fuente could be in play.
I had written him off saying he wouldn't leave because va tech is a better place right now, but in reality we could sell ourselves as better if done right. We are very close to home for him as well. I would call him a big time hire as well.

Paging RazorBroncs and Rev...
Any truth to the rumor that there's a possibility we keep Bert with injuries as the excuse/rationale? I heard from a sauce who passes along scant info here and there, but it sounded almost more like opinion. Any truth to that?
The main worry is that as injuries are piling up to our best players at seemingly every position (QB, RBx2, WR, OL, CB), that card may be played.

From what Ive been told, if Long doesn't do something his contract renewal this summer will not go so well.
This is the leverage that is had with Long and this is why there will be a change.

In my opinion injuries are one of the reasons dude needs to go. Didn't Chase Hayden break his foot like the other 30 some odd dudes we have had break a foot? No matter what coach wants to say, I think it's pretty clear that the strength and conditioning program is to blame for a lot of this nonsense. The strength and conditioning program seems to be pretty bad for other reasons too.
I'm not as plugged in as either of the two folks you paged with your post here, but I sometimes get tidbita from an administrative standpoint and I heard weeks ago now that this is a foregone conclusion. At some point keeping this guy on after it's clear he can't get the job done is going to be detrimental to the program in a lot of ways and I'm sure we have left that line in sand awhile back at blazing speed.

I am sure there are some with that thought Feral.. I have left the "All options on the table" crowd, he needs to be gone regardless.
It is a problem he has created with his recruiting, lack of depth at some areas, and unwillingness to play some players.
Here is the kicker. Several of the big money crowd were tired of Petrino prior to the Harlot and a Harley episode. His demeanor of how he treated so many people wore thin very quick. So they are reticent to accept anything close to that behavior once again. CBB treats anyone well, he JUST CANT COACH!
I think, from what I am hearing... he is gone.

I don't think there's justification for keeping him. Ineptitude has been overwhelming. Strength and conditioning has been an issue. KA has regressed with the OL, made worse by some big time misses in recruiting. We never rebounded from losing Kirkland early to the draft. It's like we had no clue that could happen and had no plan moving forward. Seemed pretty insignificant at the time but that was the beginning of the downward spiral up front.
At the end of the day BB has to answer for all of this.
not to mention that they seem to have no idea how to utilize TJ Hammonds and De'vion Warren.... or Brandon Martin for that matter.

Even before these last 2 rash of injuries I think it has been apparent he has lost the fan base. He gone.
Now we just have to make the right hire and hope he can recruit, and develop talent.

yep.... fan base is tired of crappy product. misuse of talent is just baffling.

and yet, there is talent on this team. I see it at several places.
There is a core to work with for sure. The right coach could have us back in a bowl game and possibly 8-9 wins immediately.
This goober just hasn't utilized what we do have correctly, that perhaps makes me madder than anything else.

The worst part about hiring Gus would be the job security he's demanding, it pales into comparison of Bert's reported and Nutt's actual golden parachutes. Gus's will have him easing into a nice retirement money wise.
If this is true then we should stop all talks with Gus. You never go into a negotiation in a position of weakness. This is why I believe we go with an up-and-comer and we are in a position of strength.

There's absolutely a possibility, see my post a few pages back about him sticking it out another year if we can't pin down a certain tier replacement. I'm not sure what this constitutes or how expansive/limited this "top tier" list is, it could be 20 names of all different calibers or 5 "must gets" that they consider the cream of the crop.
If the team completely gives up, ie clearly ZERO fight left in them at the end of the season, then the best available will be taken. They plan on, or have already, making it clear to the coaches and players that jobs are on the line and the performance the rest of the way determines what happens. If theres clear fight left in the players and changes made with coaching to save their jobs then they'll consider another year if the top level of coaches aren't available. If the team/coaches clearly give up after this ultimatum then they'll proceed and take the best available regardless.
I asked him to clarify on Stoops - he pointed out that UA was a sleeping giant and had the facilities and money to match anybody, and might have to pay more but there's no reason a top 10 coach can't be had here. He said OU didn't have anything that UA doesn't have (recruiting territory, demographics, facilities, $$$, academic prestige, conference, leadership, etc) other than football history, but that history had to start somewhere with the right coach at the right time - zero reason UA couldn't have similar success.
He also pointed out how pivotal this time/hire is because the rest of the SEC is looking beatable and the wrong hire could sink UA football for decade(s). He said he would talk up UA any chance he could or would gladly give advice and thoughts if needed, but it may have been an empty gesture to be nice.

Regardless of what rumors come out....I just don't see anyway possible Bert will be retained. Interest is at an all time low and Hog fans will go nuclear if he's retained. I see a victory over Coastal Carolina....that's it.
The coaching staff and team are done.

You are absolutely right. Aside from the young offensive talent, let’s not forget that Cornelius is eligible to play again next year as well. WR play has been a real weakness this season with so many young guys, but it could turn into a real strength for us next year. We have enough skill position talent coming back to potentially have a great offense.

Is it possible we try for chip Kelly?
I've heard he doesn't like recruiting though, but he did pull a ton of guys out of Texas. I also think he had the ncaa following him at oregon

I think you've answered your own question.
Think Subelt, Mac, CUSA and you'll be closer to the hire JL will give us.

Mountain West and Nutt are close enough Dale.

I know this is off topic but a guy on tardville posted about him being behind our bench and what he observed on our sidelines.
Part of the post he mentioned a defensive players mother bawling and said she didn't send her son here to be embarrassed. That her son was considering transferring if a change wasn't made. I pm'd him and asked who it was. He said he sat by krich's family. Johnny Gibson's family, and Santos family. They all were very negative about our staff. Said it was Santos who was considering it. He would probably be eligible to be a grad transfer. I guess unless the new coach can convince him to stay he will probably leave.
