Quality Thread #188

Instead of Spamming the board with several topics about the basketball team. I will keep it to one thread. This Thread will be different from hawgeyes yearly basketball thread.

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas held its annual Red-White Basketball Game Friday night in Bud Walton Arena. The Red Team, led by Isaiah Joe and Daniel Gafford, defeated the White Team, 105-82, before a crowd of 7,500. Joe, a freshman from Fort Smith, made 9-of-14 from 3-point range and scored a game-high 31 points. Gafford recorded a double-double, scoring 24 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Jalen Harris, who sat out last season per NCAA transfer regulations, also posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists. Gabe Osabuohien just missed a double-double, scoring 20 points and getting eight rebounds.

For the White Team, Mason Jones and Adrio Bailey each scored 22 points while Desi Sills added 16 points and eight assists. The teams combined for 187 points in the game. However, midway through the second half, the scrimmage had a running clock but the teams still combined to score 88 points, compared to 99 in the first half playing with a conventional clock. In addition to the game, festivities for the evening included a slam dunk competition by the Razorbacks as well as assorted Homecoming activities, highlighted by a halftime pep rally.

It was no surprise that Gafford, who had a school-record 75 dunks last season, won the slam dunk contest with freshman Ethan Henderson giving a good run for his title. In the game, Gafford finished with six dunks. The Red Team jumped out early as Gafford controlled the tip to Harris, who hit a wide-open Joe for a layup just seconds into the game. It was one of Harris’ seven, first-half assists.

Red led White 15-8 at the first media timeout behind five points from Joe. The White made a run behind Mason Jones, cutting its deficit to four, 22-18, at the second break. In the first eight minutes, Jones, a junior college transfer, was the first to double digits with 11 points. A pair of 3’s from Joe and one from Jonathan Holmes helped the Red open up an eight-point lead at the 8-minute timeout, 34-26. The White worked its way back into the game and trailed just four, 40-36, coming out of the 4-minute timeout after a basket by Adrio Bailey. The Red Team once again answered as the first half drew to a close and took a 55-43 lead at the break. True to form in the head coach Mike Anderson’s #FASTEST40 style, both teams had 10 fast-break points in the first half and both teams shot over 46 percent from the field. Joe led the way with 17 points in the first 20 minutes, draining 5-of-8 from long range. Jones poured in 17 to lead the White team in the first half, making 7-of-11 shots from the field.

quote:

o open the second half, the Red Team quickly raced out to a 71-54 lead as Joe hit a coupe of treys and Gafford put an exclamation on the lead with a dunk before the first media timeout. Despite a 3-pointer by the White’s Sills midway through the second half, the Red maintained a 20-point lead the rest of the way. Arkansas will play the first of its two home exhibition games next Friday (Oct. 26) when the Razorbacks host Tusculum. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.

Also, named the Pioneers and I have no affiliation with them.

Playing a Really Really Bad Tusculum team Friday night. We may beat this team by 100+ They have 24 players on their roster with the biggest being 7'1 245 and the smallest being 5'7 160.

3 takeaways from red/white game

1)Isaiah Joe Can Fill It Up

There’s going to be a big scoring hole left from Jaylen Barford and Daryl Macon’s graduations. The first person who looked up to filling that role was Isaiah Joe, who was the most recent Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Arkansas. He led all scorers with 31 while shooting 10-17 and 9-14 from deep. They will certainly need his scoring touch this season with a team losing almost 90% of their scoring from a year ago.

2) Length, Length, Length

The one thing this team has way more of than last season is length. Especially at the wings. Barford and Macon could do a lot of things, but they weren’t the longest defenders and it hurt the Hogs at times. Both were listed (pretty generously) at 6’3” and more often that not one was forced to guard a small forward when both were on the court with the 6’0” Anton Beard.

Fast forward to this year and you have Isaiah Joe and Mason Jones both listed at 6’5”, as is Khalil Garland if he gets healthy. Adrio Bailey should get minutes at the 3 and when Jordan Phillips recovers from his surgery that is another option who is 6’7”. Mike Anderson has said he wants to get after teams defensively, and with this group of players he can do that without being at a physical disadvantage like last season.

3)Jalen Harris Leads at Point Guard

Last year Macon and Barford took turns taking the lead as combo guards. This year the Hogs have Jalen Harris on the court, and he will be a much more traditional point guard, setting up opportunities for others, most often Joe and Gafford. He finished the scrimmage with 16 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. The six turnovers is a concern and will need to be reduced throughout the year. But having a player with the potential to clear last year’s leader of 3.9 assists per game should benefit the other scorers.

Would be interesting to see what people expect the starting line up to be. I know it will be changed quite a bit throughout the first few games but I would expect something like this when it gets settled.

Jalen Harris
Isaiah Joe
Mason Jones
Reggie Chaney
Daniel Gafford

That lineup shouldn't be too bad but I worry about how we will score if Gafford and Joe are both out at the same time. Depth may be an issue

That is one reason why I think it would be nice to have the other two veterans come off the bench. I certainly don't want that if they prove themselves. Which you could argue Bailey already has to some extent, will just depend on if the players behind him push him out of a starting role.

I think depth will most likely be an issue either way just because of all the youth. Hopefully the energy and effort will balance some of that out.

Has Mike ever had a team this long? There shouldn't be to many times when we have more than one player on the court that is shorter than 6'5''. Should help with the type of style Mike wants to establish.

This will be the one team he will be able to play his style but I worry about the depth on this team.

It will be an issue for sure. If it isn't any issue that means we have have a bunch of very good freshman that play way above their experience level.....not very likely
