We don't know for sure. He either didn't get the development he needed or he simply wasn't any good. I don't know the history of Briles QB development but Hornsby could have benefited from Enos who has a better history of QB development.
Sam and Briles could have found a better alternative at the backup position in the portal before the season began.

The University of Arkansas, with assistance from The Razorback Foundation, has officially agreed to terms with its new offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, Dan Enos. The two parties agreed on a three-year contract that will pay him $1.1 million in 2023 with a $75,000 increase each of the following two years. Below are the full details of the contract, which will be in effect until February 28, 2026.
Enos' annual salary consists of $500,000 from the university each season. In addition, The Razorback Foundation will pay him $600,000 in 2023, $675,000 in 2024 and $750,000 in 2025. There are also annual non-cumulative performance incentives for both regular season achievement and postseason achievement for Enos as shown below:

Salary seems a bit rich for a middle of the road OC

A lot better bargain than the one who had red zone issues and got too cute.

I disagree but we'll see soon enough

That middle of the road OC had incredibly similar results to the former OC, while doing it in an offense designed to eat the clock.
There have been comparisons posted from both of their times here. If Enos is middle of the road, that puts Briles right on the yellow line with him. Enos will develop any college QB, and a competent backup. Most honest assessments include the fact that Enos has been superior in that aspect.
And while people want to say that Briles recruits better, I have to ask the question, if that is so, why are we about a mile up shite creek when KJ is hurt after 3 years with Briles?

There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell that Hornsby is less talented than Liberty’s third string guy
He ended up at Texas State because no one wanted him as a QB. That is after he tried to enter the portal last year and had no interest from anyone as a QB. I guess you believe the KJ talked him into coming back story

Their results aren't that similar. Enos has been an OC for 6 seasons and never finished in the top 25 in points per game. He's been outside of the top 50 more often than in.
But I agree about him being a better qb coach.

Enos’ 2015 ppg is higher than anyone not named Petrino in Arkansas football history.

That's great. He walked into a pretty stable situation at that point. Not exactly apples to apples.
Has he ever had a team that averaged over 40 ppg?

Still more talented in every way than Liberty’s third string QB. After 3 years with Briles, Liberty should have been cake for Hornsby, I don’t care if he’s retarded.

So we should have around $900,000 left over for Pittman’s automatic bonus for winning the bowl, staff raises (Jimmy) and for a new defensive coach. Not too bad all things considered. Really curious to see how big we try to go for this last coaching spot. I figured we’d just bring in a young guy as a recruiter.

Not sure if you’re aware, but we play in the SEC. Did Briles offense ever put up 40 ppg in the SEC?

He walked into a team that had won 2 SEC games the last 2 seasons combined.
Brandon Allen was a 56% passer under Jim Chaney in 2014. Enos raised his completion percentage 10 points in one year. And that receiving corps was hardly littered with stars.
He also lost Jonathan Williams right before the 2015 season kicked off.

Literally no one in Arkansas Football history has.

We averaged more offensive TD’s per game in 2015 than any of Petrino’s teams.

I’m telling you, if we could have had the 2015 offense with the 2014 defense, we could have had a shot at a title. We can’t have nice things here though so of course they were on opposite seasons back to back.

So, the conferences that the SEC has pretty much brutally dominated for the last 25 years?
