Dennis Johnson (not that one) rumored to be coming if Roberts is the hire. D-line coach at Baylor now, was at LSU with Orgeron.

I’m too lazy to look tonight but what style of defense does Roberts run? I saw some blurb on Twitter that said a bunch of Saban’s guys came through his coaching tree. That seemed pretty impressive on paper at least.

What about this guy in the portal… former 4 star Alabama guy who transferred to Utah State after getting buried by depth.

No shot. Ya'll need to look at production for these transfer targets.

Had 3 catches for 24 yards in 2020.

Didn't play all 2021 because of a medical issue.

Williams had 1 catch for 7 yards at Utah State in 2022 and was dismissed from the team.

I haven't dug into his scheme but LSU fans say he's a good coach.

Certainly has history in this region and he was the mentor of a lot of good defensive coaches.

I did not look into it.

Roberts is actually a halfway decent coach, but us hiring a guy who just got fired is an extremely bad look.

I don't think is long for this job now. Hell, even south Carolina pulled the Loggains offer once their fans went nuts. I feel like that won't happen at Arkansas and Sam will just make passive aggressive comments about the fans not liking his DC hire throughout the season.

This will be the end of him.

I don't care how it looks. There may be more to the story.

His backstory looks really good, this is but one mark on a decent career.

Give him a chance at least, what do we have to lose at this point?

Going back to 2000, our defensive coordinators:

John Thompson - 2 years
Dave Wommack - 3 years
Reggie Herring - 3 years
Willy Robinson - 4 years
Paul Haynes - 1 year
Chris Ash - 1 year
Robb Smith - 3 years
Paul Rhoads - 1 year
John Chavis - 2 years
Barry Odom - 3 years

It's fairly obvious coordinators and assistants at top programs aren't coming here to sabotage their career trajectory in the profession.

IMO we could do worse and have done a lot worse than Roberts.

So many of y'all wanted Odom gone and got your wish but then bitch about all the potential likely replacements because these are the people who will actually take the DC job here.

Exactly.

If he comes here and puts together a good scheme, staff and production on the field why does it matter what the look is?

I'm good with Roberts.

Guys, I'm fast reaching a point where I'm beginning to think we should put everything in to running a high powered offense and just get in to shootouts every week.

That's not easy for me to say as I've always enjoyed defense more than offense, but it's been almost 20 years since we consistently fielded a decent defense.

there are reasons for this...

THe only incredible defenses in the SEC are teams who can recruit the best available talent and then coaching with this.

With the concurrent rise of quick scoring offenses, well... You need those jimmys and joes. We just can't, it seems.

Sounds like Dowell is gone for good to SCAR. Really hope we don't lose Hasz due to it

It'll cost us a few top recruits in the class because of relationships.

Pittman will have lost two top recruiters on the staff so good luck.

Loggains being OC helps him progress because he wants his next job to be HC at Arkansas. Him leaving Pittman might speed up that process especially after Kentucky had interest last offseason and South Carolina pursuing him this offseason.

Those Hog fans on social media, other messageboards and here get what they wanted this offseason. Odom gone (Scherer too), no Loggains at OC with Briles back but can only imagine the vitriol they spew when Loggains wants the HC job when that time comes.

John Thompson, Dave Wommack and Reggie Herring were good DCs. Those were good defenses but I remember after the 04 season Wommack was let go but yet it was the offensive staff that should have went out the door.

Arkansas fans bitched about Willy Robinson even though the rumors were that Petrino made defensive changes during games. Those were good defenses compared to the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The rest were bad except for a few seasons.

I didn't want Odom gone because Sam isn't going to find a better replacement. The blame was on him for not be a good recruiter but maybe that is an Arkansas problem and not an Odom problem?
