Add Greg Schiano to the list.

If he claims he's going to hire the best DC in the country, it won't be a good look if he hired a college or NFL DL coach.

Is there any reason he would make a lateral move like that?

Just answered my own question. Dude made 700K at Ohio State this year, and has a 30K buyout for a move to a non head coaching job.

Great recruiter, killer defense. I like it. Double his pay, and bring him in... if you can't get Venables.

I also like Alex Grinch from Wazzu. The guy is used to having a high powered offense on the other side.

Do either of them have any recruiting inroads to the south? Would certainly be a plus.

No way Schiano would happen, mostly due to the PTB on our end. No way a brand new coach and AD in the honeymoon phase make an even remotely risky comes-with-baggage hire like him.

I like the idea of breaking the bank and setting a new precedent by offering Venables $2.5 - 3 million and a co-HC title, I just know that's a pipe dream.

I'm trying to think of more "household name" DCs out there and there aren't many any more, at least career DCs. I genuinely hope its not Chavis, he's been average at best the last 6-8 years with high level defensive talent that we can't get here.

Can't imagine Chavis. Morris appears to be a high energy guy, and by all appearances, Chavis is the antithesis of that. Do not want, especially if he's a lazy recruiter.

No.. on Chavis. How many times did we see 3rd and Chavis through the years?

His D couldn't stop so many teams...

Don't get the Chavis love. Hogs used to beat him at LSU and he was pretty avgerage at Aggie, both stops with talent way above our historical averages. He took Aggie gig to pad his retirement acct.

Let's make one rule:

No more Big10 coaches. Ever.

What about Bud Foster? CM was quoted as saying the best defensive coordinator in college football. I know it's a pipe dream but tell me why not?

so, since he said guys he played against, i figured it would have to be someone who gave his offense fits. Obvious candidates would be FSU, Georgia Tech, South Carolina while he was at Clemson or maybe TCU while at SMU

DC's for each of those would be Charles Kelly(FSU), Ted Roof(Georgia Tech, but he's a GT alum), Lorenzo Ward (now at Louisville, but was at S. Carolina when Chad played him) or Chad Glasgow (TCU)

another option is offering to double Kevin Steele's pay.
Surely Auburn wont want to shell out more money after paying Gus a gazillion dollars

The sailing opportunities, and the melt would be glorious.

I thought about Steele as well, just don't know enough about him to make much of a judgement on his fit here and if he'd even want to be DC at UofA after being in the HC hunt. He may not want to make a move only 2 years after going to AU unless it's for HC somewhere.

Glasgow was also another thought, working under Patterson has to be a hell of a learning experience.

His brother works at Auburn and between his time there and Bama he's close to having full state retirement.

I'm assuming the state retirement is for healthcare benefits as with the salary of these coaches you wouldn't think they are doing it for the money.

Ellis Johnson went back to South Carolina for the same reason.

He said he is going to hire the best DC in the country, that means if he was to bring Robb back he would say he thinks he's the best DC in the country for example, not that its a big name splash hire.

What’s the ABSOLUTE best option if we can’t get Venables? Serious question.

These #’s are a bit meaningless without comparative offenses competed against.
