If bama doesn't shoot themselves in the foot, I'm convinced the score would have looked close to Michigan vs Rutgers. They were man handling us.

Of course they have a badass running QB being guided by lane kiffin and steve sarkisian..... Seriously, frick bama. I'm thinking the last time those two were in razorback stadium was when USC beat the brakes off Nutts team?

I don't understand how our run defense got so much worse when we returned basically everyone. Doesn't make any sense. We can hold Derrick Henry under 100 yards but then give up 400 in the first half the next year?

Well we know we have some personnel issues, a lack of team speed at LB for example.

I do think we have a schematic problem as well. Only using the D Line to generate a pass rush can work. If you have great talent across the board on the D Line.

But we have just good talent there and it isn't helped by our SOP of having our secondary play a good 7 or so yards off the wide outs. Its hard to generate a solid pass rush when the QB has a plethora of wide open targets to dump the ball off to in space. Then, when the line gets worn down, a QB can sit back and bomb away to his heart's content.

Also with our secondary playing so far back they are in Benton county that usually means we have 6 men in the box to defend against the run. With our LBs not being very fleet of foot a single missed tackle or bad read can lead to a big run.

Instead of hiding our weaknesses we are putting them in position to be exploited and teams have figured out what we are doing on defense and how to exploit that.

Here's an infuriating thing.

All sorts of talk about how Bama pressured Austin and forced him into mistakes. They pressured him 70% of his dropbacks.

However, we refuse to blitz or bring pressure because we're so chicken shite of our DB's getting toasted.

All the teams we play bring pressure against us, but we play what is basically prevent defense.

I didn't post much about this game other than if we had a prayer to beat the spread because I knew what we were up against and it'd have taken a perfectly planned and played game to be in it w/ Alabama. We did neither.

We run ancient style quarters quarters and 2 safety high Tampa 2 zone on defense. New offenses are designed to destroy these through formation, route concepts, etc.

Next and probably most important. Josh Liddell is the worst safety I have ever seen. Also no dre greenlaw means we are now FOR SURE the same defense we had last year. Scoota will benefit from the playing time but we will suck because of it.

1. do we know why?
2. what defense should we be running?

What are your thoughts about Agim being bulked up and moved inside? I was thinking about this last night. Everyone else that was recruiting him were projecting him as a DE. Did we make a mistake there with him?

of course. Top 20 player in the country as a Strong Side DE.

naaaaaaaaaaaahhhh we'll make him a NG.

I've been saying for at least a year that I thought Agim would be our goal-line RB. Given his size, speed and agility. So far we sure could have used in the redzone.

I was calling this at the end of last year, but look at our recruiting for DE'S. We are fricked at a premium position. We have recruited essentially 0 in 2-3 years. The Marshall kid was 275 coming in, will bulk up and move inside.tj Smith. Now inside

We basically have fricked up and recruited a ton of 3-4 DE. Which is a undersized quick DT in a 4-3. We have 0 and I do mean 0 DE'S in the wings for next year. I see beanum and that guy who was JUCO that isn't playing this year. We will play those 2 as starters and then whoever we get this year in recruiting. Also ramsey a converted LB. Then you have bell who is at TE (I got railed on HiV for complaining that we needed this guy to stay at DE for next year, but NOOOO the coaches know best. The mfer isn't even playing at TE and he would auto start in the 2 deep at DE next year due to lack of bodies.)

I thought agim was gonna be a DE also. Then he got here and bulked up fast. So my only hope is he is the next and better philon. That or they make him lose weight.

Oh, you're talking about the same defensive scheme that we had in 2014 that finished 10th in the country in total defense, right?

If we had the talent to run it, and have the #10 defense in the country, I don't think we're having this conversation. If we can't sustain the talent, it's adapt or perish. Guess which side we're on now? I know all about slow starts, and our 2011 season, but we looked like a practice squad.

Even if we start to gel, and put together a win streak, we are still the team that can't get it's shite together for A&M and Bama. Lord help us if we can't get our shite together. I'm looking at recruiting and Coordinators (more recruiting). Fix it, or get fixed. Bert talks about finding a place he can settle in for the long haul. I hope he stays, but I also hope Jeff Long has communicated what that will take.

Bert at his presser:

“We have to take a hard look at what we are asking [defensive] guys to do. Maybe we are asking them to do something they physically can't do.”

I think Robb Smith deserves some blame but mainly from what he is doing Monday-Friday. It wasn't so much the play calling that was bad but the horrible tackling. Which is still his job to coach.

More on the defense from Whole Hog LINK

quote:

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas held Jalen Hurts to 20 yards on eight carries last week in a 45-30 loss to No. 1 Alabama. Unfortunately, leaks sprung in many other places for coordinator Robb Smith's defense.
“You get what you emphasize,” Smith said Monday as he reviewed a ghoulish first-half performance against the Crimson Tide. The Hogs gave up 396 yards on 34 first-half snaps.

“We have to be smart what we emphasize, be smart with the plan.”

The quarterback run had been the killer for most of the season. Hurts did score two touchdowns in the first half, both on short outside runs.

But it was the long runs by running backs Damien Harris and Joshua Jacobs that did the bulk of the damage. Harris had a 57-yard gallop while rushing for 104 yards in the first half. Jacobs had a 56-yarder in the first half.
Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema, a former defensive coordinator, said the plan had been evaluated with some modifications. Bielema was disappointed in the way the Hogs “set the edge” in the first half against Alabama. It was better in the second half.

“We didn't line up in the right spots,” Bielema said on Monday. “But I've had a nice conversation with Robb on what to do philosophically. We want to get in the right spots.

“Our expectation (this year) was that we would play better. The reality is what we see on film. It's easy to see what teams are doing to us on film. I do have a defensive background. If I have to, I'll become involved.”

Do the Hogs have SEC caliber speed? Could that be the problem with big plays allowed by both Texas A&M and Alabama? “No,” Bielema said. “We have more SEC caliber athletes.”

Bielema said one of the answers is to get Santos Ramirez on the field as a third safety. He's missed most of the last two weeks with a leg bruise. He played briefly against Alabama and that left Josh Liddell and De'Andre Coley to play the bulk of the game without a break.
“Santos wanted to try to go, but he couldn't,” Bielema said. “Then it got down to two safeties.

“One of the things we did Saturday is have a couple of safeties here on recruiting visits. We need more bigger guys at that position.

“Josh prepared well but what we need to do is have him playing two-thirds of the time. A couple of times we had bad angles (in the secondary) and we did have missed tackles.”

Smith said pursuit was an issue. Playing with better speed is an issue, too, as the Hogs prepare for Ole Miss on Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m.

“We will to put them in better position to play faster,” Smith said. “Every week, we try to do that.”
Playing with better pursuit will be a main focus in practice this week.

“That's central to everything we do, from A to Z,” Smith said. “Our players play well when we play fast. We have to find ways for them to play fast.”

Weakside linebacker Dre Greenlaw was out after the first two Alabama possessions. He underwent surgery for a broken foot. It's similar to an injury sustained in high school on the other foot. Bielema said the injury will sideline Greenlaw from four to six weeks. That's a better scenario than after the game when he said it was a season-ending injury.

Smith said true freshman De'Jon “Scoota” Harris and junior Dwayne Eugene will battle for the starting spot this week in practice. The depth chart lists them as “or” after both played against the Tide.

“We will take it day by day,” Smith said. “We will prepare both to be starters.”

Khalia Hackett, on the scout team the last three weeks, could be back in the picture. “Khalia has responded and it's all hands on deck,” Smith said, noting Josh Williams, Josh Harris and Randy Ramsey are also in the picture for playing time at linebacker as added depth is sought to help Brooks Ellis.

Bielema said it may be that the Hogs have tried to play too many in the defensive front, thought to be a strength coming into the season.

“The bottom line, we gave up too many yards,” Bielema said. “We had a couple of mis-alignment situations and a good team took advantage. We will play some guys a little more. A guy like Taiwan Johnson will play more.”

It's pretty damn obvious he needs to be involved. We. don't. tackle. Defenses MUST tackle
