He is average. As an offensive coordinator he is good but as a head coach, he is Nutt level.

no he's not lol
You don't do what he did at Tech and Wazzu without being a good coach

He is a good coach who is out of place/Out of time.
During this day and age, he will absolutely cause some havoc with his coaching, mouth, and weird ways. He will win some incredible games, and lose the fans still by losing some stupidly.
He doesnt have his type of players yet either!

We haven't even seen him as a coordinator since the 90s.
He's not a bad coach, but he's an inconsistent coach. I didn't want him not because I think he wouldn't beat Alabama here, but because I thought he'd beat Alabama, finish strong, have us "on the right track," and then open the next season with a loss to Rice. There's no continuity with a Mike Leach team, each year is an entirely different roll of the dice. Leach's 20 years of HC experience have shown us that he is better than what we've had, but not as good as what we need. Maybe he's what MSU needs. Or maybe Mullen has actually elevated MSU to a place past the long term need for a guy like Leach. But either way, I'd rather have rolled the dice on Pittman, because we at least didn't know for sure that he was going to be frustrating. He had the allure of possibility. And this is coming from a guy who did not want Pittman as our HC.
Leach was below Drinkwitz on my radar. He still is.

This is very true. There's actually quite a bit of transition State needs to go through. People just got their hopes up after LSU, and thought maybe he was some kind of wizard who bypassed all of that.
I think he's going to be better than Joe Moorhead, they still got their upgrade.

What type of players is he gonna get? He said pre season this was the most talented team he's ever coached

It may be. Maybe that was just a coach giving lip service. I don't think they're really suited to his offense.

I don't see leach recruiting lights out in the SEC. it's gonna be interesting but he's not exactly known to recruit well. he's a schemer who should be getting the most outta what he's got. I don't think he's doing that right now though.

Well for one thing he needs his own players who will deal with his craziness and deal with it rather than pitch biotch fits.
He has to change the culture, then he needs a Qback who is more suited to his style of play as well. Doesnt have it....

He is a good coach in the eyes of fans at Tech and Washington State. But he is an average coach with no conference tiles in the eyes of other fans or other schools who passed him over.
He isn't a bad coach but in my opinion a good coach is someone who finally over a certain period of time, wins a conference title no matter the school. You do have exceptions but that depends on what a defition of a good coach is.
Hayden Fry is a good example of someone taking over an Iowa program that had 19 consecutive losing seasons and won multiple conference titles at a school with no winning history. He is in the college hall of fame.
Bill Synder took over a Kansas State program that was on the vege of folding up. But he won the Big 12 twice and has nine seasons with 10 or more wins. He is the college hall of fame.
Mike Leach didn't take over a program that wasn't nearly as bad as Iowa or Kansas State. Texas Tech has some history. Yet he didn't do anything that any other average coach couldn't do.
I believe Sam Pittman is a good coach considering the circumstances he is in. But he doesn't have the long term proof yet that other coaches have done over a long period of time. But he is a much better fit here than Leach could ever be.
Leach is all flash but no thunder and Sam brings a toughness to this team that has been lacking since the Petrino days.

how many years does that take? seems like 4 years for a competent team is a long time.

whats wrong with his current qb? doesn't seem like hes lacking the arm or footwork. leach also picked him as a transfer himself it's not like he's a moorehead or mullen recruit.
