If we got Barry switzer in the 70s does our history as a program look different?

State talent between Oklahoma and Arkansas are pretty similar and both have had to rely heavily on Texas recruits. Before switzer Oklahoma was good but they weren't the powerhouse that we know them as yoday. Considering the 60s we had we were at about the same level as a program. How different would we look if we had grabbed him up after broyles stepped down?

Not really because Broyles just could not step away from the program even after he retired. There is no great shortage of coaches we could have hired or did hire and then ran off because Broyles had to interfere.

Great coach and wonderful at building an athletic department. But we could have hired Bear Bryant and Broyles would have driven him off before too long. Broyles is both our biggest blessing and curse for that time period.

Our mistake was hiring Hatfield over Jimmy Johnson. Even then, Hatfield only sucked in bowl games. The fact that we haven't gotten a hire right since then has haunted us our entire SEC existence. Arguably, Petrino was a "right" hire, but due to his nature, that could be incorrect. Also, we'll never know for sure since he only got four years here.

I believe this is why we're a 7-win school. Not because we CAN'T do any better, it's because we hire dud coaches. Nutt we kept for fricking ever. If Bielema gets fired, he's going to be here nearly as long as Nutt. It's hard for me to believe our average win expectancy is 100% legit when we kept Houston Nutt for an entire decade. We could probably reasonably expect 8 or 9 wins on an average year if we could find a coach as good as Petrino who could stick around awhile.

They were great decades before Switzer.

Bud Wilkinson was pretty much unbeatable when he was at OU. He literally didn't lose a conference game for 12 consecutive years and won 3 NCs in the process.

I think if we had gotten Switzer... we would have been the cautionary tale of the early 80's.. not SMU.

Did we still join the SEC in this scenario? Because if so, then no it wouldn't be any different.

Also, OU is about 3-3.5 hours closer to the Dallas metro area than us. Flip our location with them and our histories would probably be completely different.

The better question is why didn't Arkansas join the big 8 in the 70's? It probably comes down to them liking the name big 8 and not big 9

If we hire Switzer, JJ, or keep Holtz I think we potentially become Nebraska of the 90s.
