In any event, I'm happy with our team. And with our new coach.
They most likely won't win any titles this season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them come a lot closer than people are expecting. If they continue to play defense at this level, with this amount of effort, they're going to win a lot of games.
If Mike had stayed? I think it would have been another first weekend exit of the NCAAt. There is zero doubt that Arkansas made a clear upgrade in coaching talent and I say that as a big fan of Anderson. I couldn't be happier about the direction the program is headed in.
In fact, I had said in the predict the record thread that I figured these guys would win 22 games. I think that was a conservative estimate looking back at it. These guys may be good for 25 wins.

If they were playing like shite it would be Mike's fault of course.
He should get credit for recruiting the talent on this team. This thread is dumb as frick anyway, we’re all behind Musselman and Mike is doing fine at St. John’s. All parties are better off.

I agree with every word in your post, Stonehog.
It could be argued that our defense wouldn't be nearly as good as it is now if not for the talent Anderson brought in. He recruited players to play tempo, full court press. Now that they're not running up and down the floor on literally every play, they're more active in half court defense.

You know, I don't typically follow any teams other than Arkansas, but I'll be interested to see how he does at St. John's. I think it was the perfect place for him to land. He will be recruiting Brooklyn. "The basketball capital of the world."
He's not gonna have a hard time finding long, athletic players like he wants and St. John's has a terrific history to draw from.
I think Anderson will build a very strong team there. I'm happy for him.

Love me some Mike Anderson but I feel like the current evolution of the game is really hard on his style. Pressing ball handlers and forcing mistakes is hard when 4 or 5 guys can bring the ball up, same for 3 point defense. Taking chances and leaving guys open looks for 3 is tough when in todays game lots of teams have numerous guys on the floor who can shoot from downtown. Wearing down the other team is also difficult when there are TV time outs, reviews, constant stoppages. Im not sure 40 minutes of Hell or The Fastest 40 will ever be as effective again unless the rules or styles change.

I mean, he's one of just a handful of coaches active who haven't ever had a losing season. He took Missouri to a temporary #1 ranking.
Sure, the style of play has been hamstrung with some of the rule changes, but there were plenty of times while he was here that his team forced 20+ turnovers a game.
Hell, he should have beaten the eventual national champs in the second round of the tournament just a few years back.
Mike's system still works, IMO. But it isn't ever going to work like it did in the mid 90s. That 94-96 team we had was one of the better college basketball teams of all time, IMO.

Are you not watching the same games I am? This roster of players is playing defense at levels never seen at the UofA before.
That is how this is a great roster. Because they have great ball players.
Is this a joke?

quote:Except he had arguably more talent and a lot of the same players on this roster last year and we didn't even make the tournament. I understand the sentiment but let's not just ignore that Mike had his shot with an even better roster last year with many of the same key pieces and was nowhere near as effective. We could also talk until we're blue in the face about all of the elite talent that left our borders under his watch, but it's water under the bridge.
He should get credit for recruiting the talent on this team.
I agree the thread is dumb, though. It doesn't need to be constantly pointed out that Muss is a better coach. It's obvious to anyone watching.
We should all be grateful to Mike for righting tFlagship when it had gone WAY off course and leave it at that. Hope he has great success in New York.

Highly doubt it. I believe Mike would have had us in the NCAAt
That’s fricking stupid. We would have gotten our asses kicked last night and would have been lucky to win 17 games with mike. 16-16 would have been the most likely record.

That’s called good coaching and scouting. Something MA didn’t believe in.

I have to credit Mike for recruiting some really good players.
But I have to credit Muss for developing these players and for creating a game plan to help them succeed.
Mike had similar if not better talent last year and missed the tournament. Muss had worse talent every year at Nevada and went to the tournament 3/4 years.
Without Muss these guys would still be trapping 60 feet from the basket and giving up wide open dunks and threes. Now we're frustrating teams and forcing low percentage, contested shots and you see the results.

mike had our program respectable and got some talent in the door. his coaching never took us over the hump.
Muss recruits and seems to coach at higher level than mike. the detailed preparation is what gets us a win. going in with a game plan and playing fundamentals well.
you can still tell we're not excellent at running this offense. the passes to nowhere are where expectations got out of line and someone misread the situation. still some of that to clean up but we're making progress.

Not here to crap on Mike. Think he brought solidity and consistency to Arkansas but Musselman may take us back to where we used to be with Nolan.

Forgot to add that one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle for this team has been Jimmy Whitt who left because of Mike and came back because of Muss.
Without Whitt I don't think this roster has a chance to make the tournament.
