Saban left the college ranks and did coach DB's and was a DC for a handful of years. Don't know how great he was at that but probably pretty decent. His time as a HC wasn't that stellar. Pretty obvious that his niche is college coaching though.

I just want someone who can generate a pass rush. I don't care if they're bagging groceries right now.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema with a statement announcing DL coach Rory Segrest won't be retained.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas has fired defensive line coach Rory Segrest, according to a statement released Saturday.
“After reviewing the 2016 season and starting the transition to a new defense, I have decided to go in a different direction with our defensive line coach position," Razorbacks head coach Bret Bielema said. "I want to thank Rory for his hard work and contributions on defense and special teams over the last three years. I wish he and his family nothing but the best in the future.”

Official now

I'm hearing that Segrest is for sure out, will be announced soon but not within the next day or two. Also saying that Hargreaves is another one that's on the way out but it's not nearly as certain and/or hurried as Segrest. Partridge is 100% in the mix and will most likely appear somewhere on our staff, and supposedly we'll have 2 LB coaches.

It's speculated that Segrest is having a hard time finding a new team to latch on to, which is why it's taking a little longer. He WILL be let go if he's not employed somewhere else by a certain date, which is why he's not out recruiting. Apparently it's bad enough that they're not even letting him go out on visits pretending like he's not being fired like most coaches do. This makes me think that those locker room and behind the scenes problems amongst the defensive staff are mostly involving Segrest (and Hargreaves to a lesser degree).

ETA: apparently Hargreaves isn't being forced out as much as he would be leaving by choice. He likes it here as far as the team goes but there's something behind the scenes going on non-football related. Sounds like they're weighing their options and seeking a replacement, but if that shouldn't happen in a timely manner they're fine with him staying another season.

It also sounds like "theyll be trying something different with the defensive staff." Whether that refers to the 2 LB coaches or something else is up in the air. I like where this is going though.

You're welcome, people.

NSD was the roundabout cutoff date for Segrest, hence the extremely rare firing by CBB instead of him "finding a new team."

Packers assistant Jerry Montgomery expected to interview for defensive line job at Arkansas. Montgomery played for Bret Bielema at Iowa.

Not Partridge or Montgomery

I'm STILL not hearing anything regarding Montgomery and haven't all along, so who knows if there's legs to anything being thrown out there right now.

I do still expect Partridge to join the staff in some manner. I wasn't under the impression it would be a true DL coach from the jump, possibly a more vague "defensive assistant" or a non-on the field roll that would still allow for recruiting?

Well I think we have to pay a large buyout for him. Also he loses a large portion of money for taking a job. You may be right as I am sure there are loopholes to this.

His buyout is about $1.1mil from FAU unless he takes another coaching job, then it drops to $200k owed to him. There are ways around this and ways to supplement his pay to compensate.

That being said, sources are often wrong or have a way of mixing their own wishes/opinions into the truth. Everything I hear I take at face value until I have a reason not to.
