Quality control coaches didn't exist in the capacity they do to day before Saban implemented them at Bama.
Ford was hired by Broyles to be a consultant to the football team and staff during Crowe's final season.
After Broyles fired Crowe and eventually hired Ford the first person from the staff that Ford fired was one Houston Nutt.

If it were only one bad season, he would still be at Louisville, but of course there was more too it than just a bad win/loss record one year.
His staff was dwindling down to sons and son in laws filling assistant positions.
If he would be willing to an OC he could make non power 5 HC money while being surrounded with people who could recruit.
