Ron Holland, Duncanville High School (TX), 2023 – A local Duncanville product, Holland was one of the most established players in the gym. As a five-star prospect, he’s already a very likely McDonald’s All-American. Nevertheless, he not only came to play, but played the right way. Holland is typically at his best in the open floor, and that continued to be the case here, but there were productive signs in half-court breakdown drills as well. He was a willing ball-mover with extra passes around the rim and a clean spot-up shooting threat, while also providing verbal leadership on both ends of the floor.

All that stands between five-star wing Ron Holland and a commitment are an Oct. 10 official visit to UCLA and an Oct. 29 an unofficial visit to Texas for the Longhorns’ charity exhibition basketball game against Arkansas. Once Holland checks those two things off his to-do list, he intends to move quickly toward a decision.

“I don’t have a decision day yet, but I think I’ll have a good idea of where I'm going by the end of October and I’ll be ready to announce,” Holland said on Saturday.

Texas, Arkansas, UCLA, Kentucky and the NBA G League are thought to be the serious players in the battle for Holland’s letter of intent. And while the Longhorns and Razorbacks seem to hold an edge for now, UCLA and Kentucky both are taking the month of October to make late pushes.

“I’m excited to get back out to UCLA,” Holland said. “I liked the first visit a lot. This time, I’m going to get to watch practice and see what they’re really about. I need to see that so if I pick UCLA, I know i” in a good spot.

“I’m talking to Kentucky a lot lately. I’m not going to be able to make it to Big Blue Madness, so I probably won’t get to visit again before I decide.”

The highest-ranked senior in attendance at the Wootten 150 Camp over the weekend at Fieldhouse USA in Mansfield, Texas, five-star Ron Holland put together a dominant camp performance on both ends of the floor. He won the one-on-one competition, had his team in the finals of the three-on-three and basically did what he wanted when he wanted.

Ranked No. 12 overall by 247Sports, the 6-foot-8 forward at Duncanville (Texas) High is down to a final group of four college programs -- Arkansas, Kentucky, Texas and UCLA -- and the G League. For now, the plan is to wait until the spring to make his college choice.

“Me and my mom had a long, deep and detailed conversation about that," Holland told 247Sports. "We decided that just in case anything happened, because you know anything can happen, I wouldn’t be stuck or having to figure things back out.”

Some might think that choosing to wait might add stress to what is often considered to be a stressful process of picking a school (or the pros). Holland doesn't feel any stress and despite already experiencing incredible success during his high school career, he's got big goals for his last year.

“There’s actually not any (stress)," said Holland. "People say that the recruiting process gets you stressed out, but my mom and my people that I have in my little circle, they take care of all of the stress so that they can make sure that I’m enjoying my senior year.

“I want us to be better than any team that has ever walked through Duncanville, that’s my mindset. We’ve had great teams, great players, we’ve gotten people in the NBA that come through, but it’s our turn now and I feel like I’ve got a good voice, a good leading role and that everybody respects me and I respect everybody there and we can get this thing done.”

Of course, making a decision is important and while he's saying that he'll take his time, Holland is taking steps that would allow him to decide sooner if he wanted. He's going to take a second trip to UCLA on October 10th and he'll head back down to Austin at the end of the month when Texas hosts Arkansas for an exhibition game. He discussed each of his college options.

quote:

Arkansas: “They are saying that they’ve got the NBA level stuff. They break their players down statistically like NBA coaches do. At their facility they train like NBA players, and they also recover like NBA players and that also goes for any other college I have. But their big message to me is that they can get me prepared for the NBA.”

quote:

Multiple times during his interview with 247Sports, Holland stressed that while his ultimate goal is to make the NBA and that a large part of his decision will be based on development, that he's ultimately responsible for putting in the work and winning matters to him. Now it's just a matter of making the best possible choice.

“I have a great five options," said Holland. "Ultimately it is up to me, but it is going to be about where I will have my best experience and where they will put me in the best position to be that dude that I’m trying to be. You have to know who you are at the end of the day and I’m trying to go be myself and be that high energy guy that tries to bring everybody up together.”

WHO LOOKED LIKE THE BIGGEST MCDONALD’S GAME LOCK?

quote:

Bossi: I think the obvious answer here is Ron Holland. I’m on the voting committee and we won’t begin the process for a while but his body of work as not only a talent, but a certified winning player, speaks for itself. What I loved about his play this weekend is that he really had nothing to gain in terms of reputation by showing up to play. But Holland is a competitor, and he wasn’t going to pass up a chance to compete. He was dominant on both ends, showed some personality and while nothing is promised, he looks like a pretty safe bet to emerge as a Burger Boy this winter. Whether he ends up at Arkansas, Kentucky, Texas, UCLA or the G League, he’s got a lot to work with.

Finkelstein: Holland was probably a McDonald’s All-American lock before this weekend, but if anyone had any doubts, they should be gone now. He won the one-one-one segment while showing his versatile individual offense, including underrated shooting ability. He was in the finals of the three-on-three, where I thought his passing really stood out. He showed good leadership and energy throughout the two days and thrived in transition, as most have come to expect. Overall, I left with the same thought I had after his stint with USA Basketball this summer, that he’s a likely top ten prospect in the class.

quote:

WHICH NON-SENIOR CAUGHT YOUR EYE?

quote:

Bossi: He didn’t get to play for the entire weekend because his high school team was also playing in some preseason events, but I sure would have liked to have been able to watch Dink Pate for the entire weekend. It isn’t as if Pate is some off the radar newcomer or anything. He’s already ranked No. 28 in the class of 2024 and has 20+ high major offers. The question is just how good can he be? I think he’s got the physical tools and natural skill base to make another leap and with a little more focus and consistency who knows just how good he can be.

Jenkins: It just always seemed as if Landren Blocker was at the right place at the right time. The brother of Arkansas pledge Layden Blocker, Landren was the king of making something happen above the rim this weekend. He got out on the break and had a few highlight finishes that certainly drew the attention of spectators in attendance. His athleticism and strong build allow him to be effective on the defensive side of the ball and to compete with taller physical opponents on the glass. Whether it was in transition, on defense, or in a fifty-fifty scenario, Blocker's nose for the ball was constantly on display.

quote:

Annor Boateng was on the receiving end of a massive ranking bump in Rivals’ last update, and the class-of-2024 guard spent the weekend at the Wootten150 Camp proving it was well deserved. The Arkansas-based standout now sits at No. 13 in the Rivals150 and was one of the most effective players at the event. He showed the ability to contribute in a litany of ways, not the least of which is getting to his spots with ease and scoring through contact.

Following the final day of camp, Boateng chatted with Rivals about where his recruitment currently stands.

quote:

ON WHERE THINGS STAND WITH IN-STATE ARKANSAS

"They are really big on recruiting players froM Arkansas, so they like me. They always hit me up. The whole staff has my number, and they all text me here and there. They send me updates about the team and everything."

ON IF HE KNOWS ARKANSAS COMMIT LAYDEN BLOCKER

"I know him a little bit. I used to play against him when he went to Little Rock Christian. I’m actually pretty cool with both him and his brother (Landren Blocker).”

quote:

RIVALS REACTION: Boateng is nowhere near finished receiving offers, and it’s not insane to think blue bloods will be involved as his game continues to involve. For now, however, Arkansas and LSU have to like where they stand. It’s much too early to venture any sort of guess on where the five-star will land, however.

LINK

quote:

AS ADVERTISED: ANNOR BOATENG

quote:

WHAT HE DID: Despite being just a junior and recently emerging as a five-star prospect, Boateng often looked like the best guard on the floor over the weekend. He’s well-versed in using his strong upper body to get to his spots and finish through contact. He also showed off a developing jumper that keeps defenders honest. He has the size and fluidity to guard 1 through 3 and has already developed a high basketball IQ. He helped lead his team to the camp’s championship, acting as the lynchpin for the offense. Boateng recently jumped up to No. 13 in the Rivals150 and looked the part of a top 15 prospect all weekend.

RECRUITMENT: According to Boatang, LSU, Oklahoma, Auburn, Arkansas and Missouri are most involved, but he is likely to collect more offers this winter. He says he plans to take October visits to Auburn and LSU.

quote:

ONE-ON-ONE CHAMP: RON HOLLAND

quote:

WHAT HE DID: One-on-one basketball may not matter much when it comes to scouting or projecting basketball players, but Holland won the camp tournament so it should be noted. That said, his performance went beyond that. Holland remains one of the best transition players in this class and is a matchup nightmare for most opponents. He handles the ball well for his size and has become more creative when it comes to finishing in traffic. He continues to work to become a better shooter and when that clicks his upside is as high as anyone’s.

RECRUITMENT: Holland will likely land at Texas or Arkansas, but UCLA is also very much in the mix. He is set to visit the Bruins on Oct. 29 and announce a commitment shortly thereafter. The NBA G-League is also in play.

Four-star forward Zayden High announced Monday that he is down to a final list of five schools. Arkansas, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, and Villanova all made the cut for the 6-foot-9 stretch four-man out of Spring Branch (Texas).

Since the middle of June, High has taken official visits to Michigan, North Carolina, and Villanova, while he has been to Austin for an unofficial visit to Texas. An Arkansas visit is also potentially “in the works.”

quote:

Arkansas: “They were one of the first couple of schools to offer me. They saw the potential in me early. Eric Musselman has been good to my family and I. We have not gone on a visit there. I think we have a visit in the works so I am trying to get up there. I cannot say too much about them but they came on a home visit and showed me a powerpoint of Jaylin Williams’ role on the team and how many professionals they have produced. Obviously, I want to play in the NBA so they showed me NBA guys who have came through their school."

quote:

Now that he is down to five schools, High says he will make his decision once he gets a sense that he is comfortable with one program.

“I am honestly going off of feeling,” High said. “I am kind of going with the flow. I would not say there is a set date of when I will announce anything.”

When making his decision, High said he will choose a school with a great coaching staff that will care for him and his family on and off the court.

“I want to be coached, pushed, and loved,” High said. “I also want to win and help my team get to the national championship.”

One of the spring’s biggest stockrisers, High is ranked No. 55 overall in the 247Sports Top150 Player Rankings for the 2023 class.

Seems we’ve cooled a bit on Zayden High. I think if we wanted him we would already have him committed.

I’m wondering do we take Landren Blocker, Dink Pate, Jase Richardson and Boateng in the same class?

Ron Holland hopes to have mind made up by month's end

quote:

One of the most in-demand 2023 prospects left on the board, five-star forward Ron Holland, says he’ll have a solid idea of where he’ll attend college before Halloween. That said, he’s not tipping his hand just yet.

Rivals recently caught up with the Texas-based star to discuss the final stretch of his recruitment and where each team in the hunt to land his letter of intent stands.

quote:

ON A DECISION DATE

“I don’t know about a decision day yet, but I should have a good idea of where I’m going, probably sometime in October.”

ON WHAT'S LEFT TO EXPLORE

“I go to UCLA on Oct. 10 and I’m going to Texas vs. Arkansas (charity game in Austin) on the 29th.”

quote:

ON ARKANSAS

"They have a great coaching staff and a great group of guys. They're going to be really good this year. Their pitch to me is that they do things at the NBA level. They have an NBA facility and do everything like the NBA does it."

ON IF KNOWING PLAYERS ON THE RAZORBACKS' ROSTER HELPS THEM

“Definitely. I played against those dudes my whole life and I played with Anthony Black my junior year, so it’s good they’re there. Everything is comfortable.”

quote:

RIVALS' REACTION
Arkansas feels like the team to beat by a slight margin here, but it’s impossible to know what change Holland’s upcoming UCLA visit may have on the situation. The Razorbacks should feel decent about where they stand, but it’s not time to start counting chickens by any stretch. Kentucky is a real player. UCLA and Texas are capable of becoming serious threats in short order depending on how things break.

Top-20 Annor Boateng has three visits in mind

quote:

Annor Boateng is the No. 16 player in the updated 2024 On3 150. On3’s ranking is ahead of the industry-standard On3 Consensus, which has the 6-foot-5 wing at No. 26.

I try to get most of my baskets inside,” Boateng told On3. “I try to be an inside-out player. So when I get my layups or mids, then I’ll try to move out to the threes. And basically, the point is really to get fouled on a layup attempt and go to the free throw line, get to like your shot form down, and feel more comfortable moving outside. I’ve improved my jump shot and handle a lot this summer. I kept putting in a lot of work, and the game got simple for me.

“I try to model myself after Anthony Edwards, who is also an inside-out player. Being able to attack the basket at my size is a deadly combo because you can’t really guard that.”

With a big summer on the Adidas 3SSB 16u Circuit with the Arkansas Hawks program, where he averaged 19.4 points this summer. The four-star wing was also invited to back-to-back Team USA training camps. On3 caught up with Annor Boateng at the recent Wootten Top 150 Cam to talk about the current state of his recruitment.

“I hear a lot from Missouri, LSU, Arkansas, and Auburn,” Boateng said. “But I have not been on any visits yet, just like team camps and elite camps. But I am trying to get an official set to go to Missouri and Auburn. I want to look at LSU too.”

quote:

Boateng talks Arkansas
“When I went there for camp,” Boateng said. “I got to see the academic facility. Academics are a big thing for me and my family; we are academics first. So, seeing their academic facilities were great. They are all about helping their players they have a lot of tutors and help at all times.

Basically, they said it’s impossible to fail unless you just don’t apply yourself because there’s always gonna be help there for you. So it’s little stuff like that. It was eye-opening.”

quote:

In his words
“I’ll be looking at a school that is focused,” Boateng said. “Really, focused on improvement and development. And then a good academic support system so I can truly focus on two things (school and basketball) at once. I want a place that will help me improve to get to where I want to go in life, whether that is the next level of basketball or even job-wise for life after basketball.

“Location won’t really be a factor to me. I could honestly care less about the location or the weather. A school’s play style will matter a lot because you just can’t fit into every style. So maybe like a four-out type system. But the playing style will probably be a determining factor for me.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – After a two-year hiatus, the USA Basketball Junior National Team Minicamp is back this weekend as 60 of the top high school players in the country have converged on the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.

Players arrived on Friday and spent Saturday morning in workshops focused on topics including mental health and NCAA eligibility, before taking the court Saturday afternoon.

It began with the underclassmen in session one, before the juniors and seniors in attendance took the court in the nightcap.

While no college coaches are permitted to attend, there’s still plenty at stake. NBA scouts are in the building all weekend as too are voters and decision-makers for the McDonald’s All-American Game and Nike Hoop Summit among others.

Class of 2023

quote:

Layden Blocker, 6’3”, Sunrise Christian (KS) – The Arkansas commit was all over the rims on Saturday night, showing off his trademark athleticism to throw down big dunks every time he was able to get loose in the open floor. Blocker also impressed on the defensive end as well, showing his ability to pressure the ball and create offense from his defense. Not only was he the most dynamic open floor-guard in the field on Saturday, but he also set the tone with just how hard he played.

quote:

Class of 2024

quote:

Annor Boateng, 6’5”, Little Rock Central (AR) – One of the more positionless players in the camp, Boateng is built more like a forward with his strong body and willingness to be physical. He got the chance to show off his offensive versatility here too though. First, he had good hands and touch that were an asset in several different situations. His jumper also looked underrated with a clean release and soft ball. Defensively, there are tools in place that should allow him to be versatile and multi-positional as well.

The younger brother of Arkansas commit Layden Blocker, Landren Blocker has occupied a front row seat to his sibling’s national recruitment for years. His time to blaze his own trail is here, however, as a number of major programs are starting to offer the class-of-2024 guard.

Blocker recently chatted with Rivals about where things stand and which schools and which schools are in the mix. He also discussed his desire to possibly play alongside his brother at the college level.

quote:

“Central Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tulane, Arkansas, Missouri … there's more but I'm forgetting some. I feel like I have really strong relationships with UCA and Arkansas in my home state. Also, Missouri. I have a relationship with Coach [David] Nutt from Missouri. I like him a lot.”

quote:

ON HOW WATCHING HIS BROTHER’S RECRUITMENT HELPED HIM

“I got to see a lot of how things go and watch my dad critique him a lot, I also got to go on some visits with him and see what college coaches say. It was nice getting to kind of experience the environment and all that. It helped me try to understand and make myself ready.”

ON WANTING TO PLAY ALONGSIDE HIS BROTHER IN COLLEGE

“I’ve always wanted to play with my brother. We never had the chance to play on the same high school team. If the tie comes, and we have the chance, I’d love to. If it’s the best fit, then it’s a no-brainer, but it has to be the best fit.”

ON HIS CONVERSATIONS WITH ARKANSAS

“They just tell me to keep improving and working on little things, like my shot and being a leader.”

ON WHAT PART OF HIS GAME HE IS WORKING TO IMPROVE

“My outside shot and my defensive intensity and energy.”

quote:

RIVALS REACTION: The 6-foot-5 Blocker has good length and is quickly developing from a skill standpoint. How his recruitment will unfold hinges largely on how he continues to evolve this season, but it seems as though a number of high-major programs are already in pursuit. His offer list should expand in the coming months.

David Castillo is a familiar face on the USA Basketball scene. A gold medal winner at the U16 division this summer, the 6-foot-2 combination guard out of Bartlesville (Okla.) looked at ease scoring the rock from the perimeter and making the right decisions with the ball this past weekend.

On the recruiting trail, Castillo has yet to set a date for any fall official visits. However, he told 247Sports that Oklahoma State will be the first official he plans on scheduing when he gets the chance.

"They have been recruiting me since I was in eighth grade," Castillo said. "They have been at my doorstep visiting me the most. The staff has been taking care of me and I appreciate them for that."

Castillo says Arkansas, Florida, Gonzaga, Kansas, LSU, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma are some of the schools recruiting him the hardest. He has been to Arkansas, Kansas, LSU, and Oklahoma for visits and he discussed his thoughts on each program with 247Sports:

quote:

Arkansas: "It is an NBA-style team. I am excited to see what they do with their freshmen this year. Anthony Black is my guy. I talk to him a lot. I love the campus and I love the coaching staff because of how hard they push their players."

quote:

Castillo is no stranger to taking visits. With his first official visit date taking place this fall, he will look for a program where the coaches have the most confident in him making an immediate impact.

"I am looking at how much time they take out to come and see me," Castillo said. "That plays a big role in addition to how they want to use me. I want to play as a freshman and have the freedom to make plays and lead a team."

Rated a four-star prospect, Castillo is ranked No. 25 overall in the 247Sports Top150 Player Rankings for the national junior class.

USA Basketball: Blocker, McCain, Carr lead the upperclassmen

quote:

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – The USA Basketball Junior National Team Minicamp resumed on Sunday with two sessions, for both the underclassmen and upperclassmen, before Sunday evening’s conclusion.

There was lots of discussion this weekend about whether the format and setting of the mini-camp was a good evaluation setting. To be clear, that is obviously not the intended purpose. The purpose is, presumably, to develop a culture and system within USA Basketball that can help lay the groundwork for success in various FIBA games and simultaneously serve the individual athletes and their families.

However, I still believe it is one of the very best evaluation settings we have access to all year long. While not all of the play is five-on-five, the drills and competitive breakdowns simulate actions that players are going to see at future levels. Evaluators get to see who can make reads and understand defensive coverages. The vast majority of these players are typically the primary option on their respective teams. Here, we get to see who can adapt to less volume and freedom, while maintaining their efficiency. Similarly, we get to see whose physical tools – size, length, leaping ability, quickness, power – pop in a setting where they are only competing against the best of the best.

Those variables can be very different than what we get to assess during the high school or grassroots seasons, but they are critical in projecting who can translate their game to the next level.

With that context in mind, these were some of the biggest take-aways in the classes of 2023 and 2024.

quote:

The Seniors

There were a handful of the elder statesmen who managed to impress over the course of the weekend. AJ Johnson was up and down, but his highs were very impressive. Aden Holloway emerged as the top shooter in the camp to no one's surprise. Jeremy Fears was the most reliable true point guard while showing off his evolving athleticism. Ron Holland and Stephon Castle both had steady buzz about their translatable two-way games. OTE’s Tyler Smith was most impressive when he was buying into being a run-and-jump big man, with good hands and a strong build to match.

The three players in the class of 2023 that helped themselves the most this week though were Layden Blocker, Jared McCain, and Coen Carr.

Blocker and Carr emerged right away on Saturday, not just because they were probably the most explosive overall athletes in the field, but because they also both set the tone with how hard they were willing to play. Blocker maintained his dominance on Sunday. The Arkansas commit was making plays defensively, creating pace in the open floor, and finishing hard above the rim with both hands. He made a couple nice passes when in attack mode as well, getting the defense to collapse before spraying out to shooters. The fact that he is young for his grade, and doesn’t turn 18 until next summer, only adds to the intrigue.

quote:

The Juniors

Vyctorius Miller showed why he’s such an intriguing long-term prospect. His potential might exceed his production right now, and obviously that will ultimately have to change, but there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic. He’s ultra-fluid, has good wing size, plenty of offensive tools to develop, and is just starting to fill-out his frame. In short, he’s going to require some patience, but he could very well be one of those prospects that just puts it all together late.

Tahaad Pettiford, Jamari Phillips, and David Castillo headlined the best 2024 guards. Pettiford was playing at a very high level on Saturday, showing off his quickness, tight handle, shot-making ability, and even bounce at the rim. Phillips got off to a good start on day one as well and was able to sustain it throughout the weekend, showing not only the shot-making he is known for, but quality passing and on-ball defense as well. Castillo too is often known for his shot-making, but he always seems to strike a good balance in USA Basketball settings, and embrace more of a true point guard mentality.

Well there was some doubt after he started scheduling some visits but after seeing him come up for the game yesterday I think most doubt has left.

The reason I worded it that way was he has faked us out before on the timing of his commitment.

Definitely seems like our expected elite class is crumbling right before our eyes. Hopefully we can circle back to those we passed on earlier.
