Startup to Serve Up Chicken Strips Cultivated From Cells in Lab
‘Clean meat’ developers say it avoids towering costs of feeding, caring for livestock; Tyson takes note

Mother of God!!!!

On one hand you get drug infused chicken, the other hand you get chicken grown in a lab

Sweet, subscription only link.

Can you at least give us a hint of what it says?

Exactly. Hell, if that lab chicken tastes better I may have to set up a chemistry set in my living room.

You do realize that in 20 years, if you want actual meat it's almost always going to be vat grown. You're a lot more likely to get an algae based protein alternative designed to taste and feel like meat.

Fine by me. I'm guessing it'll be cheaper and more nutritionally efficient at that point.

This is inevitable. The rate at which the world is growing vs the food supply we have is unsustainable.

I'm all for vat grown meats. Less damaging to the environment and once we get all the kinks worked out it will probably be cheaper.

I will cheerfully let the organic fans pay 8 bucks or more a pound for chicken.

It just seems so creepy - kinda like cars that drive themselves. I'm not against either per se but I'm gonna let others be the guinea pigs first (perhaps vat grown guinea pigs?).

They've actually been doing a lot of research in this subject. One of my friends encouraged me to try a product called "Beyond Meat". There's no soy, and they use pea protein and some other vegetable products to replicate the feel and taste of a burger. I could barely tell it wasn't a burger, and had I not known initially, I probably wouldn't really have noticed.

Then why not just eat a burger? I don't get it.

Lets boycott food X.. then make an alternative that's as close to X as possible.

Because it will become more cost/space effective to produce the substitute. Raising cattle is rough on the environment and really inefficient at producing food.

Better sources of protein are needed given that fisheries are facing serious problems with the declining oxygen levels in the oceans.

All kidding aside, the only people who don't take climate change seriously are religious nuts, complete idiots and people who will be dead within a decade. Don't bitch about it "not being settled" or "being a chinese hoax". Just figure out which of those three categories you fall into :)

This wasn't any kind of boycott. I normally wouldn't eat that product because it's more expensive than eating a burger. The point was more that I was surprised at how much like beef it tasted. If it became cheaper than a burger, I would have no qualms about buying it though.
