I honestly think the most trusted arms right now outside of Hagen are Wood, Gaeckle, Foutch, and Faherty. I think Molina has just about worked his way fully back into the circle of trust and we’ll keep matching Hewlett up against lefties.

Tygart, McEntire, and Bybee are probably the next layer. Will go to them but the leash is short or will go to them to try and eat up innings in a blowout.

Then you’ve got Dossett and Coil. Starting to really scrape the bottom of the barrel.

And if we see Frank or Carter, things are going very good or very bad.

What's crazy is even those bottom of the barrel guys have the potential to throw up a crazy stat line for a couple innings. They have insane talent just have yet to harness it. Who knows what could happen when all the pressure comes pouring on

Souza - 3/21 for .143
Diggs - 6/49 for .122

Just telling us what we already know…. But Diggs hitting .122 on so many at bats is absolutely killing us.

Been saying this for a while now, but while everyone has been focused on Diggs’ struggles (understandably so), Souza has quietly become our worst hitter.

He’s been an absolute trainwreck since the Ole Miss series, and is 3-36 (.083) with 18 K’s in SEC play since the start of the Alabama series. That was nearly 2 months ago. It’s one thing to get pitched well (or in Diggs case be too patient and pressing because you’re in disadvantage counts), but Souza has a lot of swinging strikes and just swings over the top of the ball. He also doesn't ever draw walks because he’s so undisciplined at the plate.

I get the sense that DVH doesn’t trust him at the plate, which is why we’ve been seeing a lot more of Helfrick at the DH spot.

Yep, it sucks because I thought he was going to be lightening in a bottle earlier in the season. He's got insane potential, but he's gotta figure out how to be a college-level hitter from a discipline perspective.

He could be, but he never got consistent reps like Diggs has. DVH is loyal to his veterans almost to a fault. DVH was doing matchup based lineups for the whole season. Give Souza a whole season of ABs and I bet he will be the best hitter on the team next year.

Souza will be a big beneficiary of summer ball. Hopefully he goes to the Cape.

Helfrick too.

Looking back at the draft

quote:

Right-handed pitcher signee Gabe Gaeckle was also selected by the Reds in the 20th round, though he told HawgBeat's Kevin Bohannon that he still intends to make it to campus.

Included in that group were some of MLB Pipeline's top-250 draft prospects. It's understood that pitchers Adam Hachman (No. 101), Hunter Dietz (No. 141) and Gaeckle (No. 159) have the intentions to play for the Razorbacks. Top-250 position players not selected in the draft include catcher Ryder Helfrick (205) and shortstop Nolan Souza (222), who posted via Instagram he intends to make it to campus.

Other top-250 signees not drafted include pitchers Colin Fisher (139) and Tate McGuire (183).

What an insane class. Hachman never pitching and Dietz basically not as well definitely hurt some given they were higher prospects than Gaeckle who has been unreal. The odds one of them would have been major contributing factors are high.

Helfrick and Souza will be studs next year.

Is it crazy to think we may be a better overall team next year than this?

Getting Hachman, Dietz, and Fisher back will be huge for next season's rotation along with Gaeckle. That's a solid core along with Gage Wood for next year's bullpen. Hopefully, Hachman stays and doesn't transfer.

As far as better next year, it really depends on the offense getting going nd not being a dud like it has been the last couple of years.

I'm really hoping Nate Thompson does not return.

It's hard to say with transfers in and out. I'd imagine we'd get a very high end pitcher again and another strong bat or two.

We will be loaded regardless and arguably have more depth.

Helfrick, Souza, Aloy next year may be nasty.

Thoughts on who starts Friday?

What do we do in the outfield besides Holt? Seems like Diggs is in whether we like it or not but for goodness sakes, can we move him to the 8 or 9 spot in the lineup? Who do yall think starts in LF?

Also call me crazy but what do yall think about McLaughlin batting Leadoff? He’s got the highest OBP on the team. His SLG isn’t really overly impressive. He’s behind Aloy, Stovall, JSL, White, and Holt in Slugging %. Not exactly a speedster but if he starts the game off with a walk… I’ll take it.

Believe Wood is starting, and I'd like to see Jones in LF for the power against crappy arms.

Thank you! I’ve been wanting McLaughlin to lead off for a while. He has the most walks on the team by far (almost 20 more than the next highest), and doesn’t strike out a ton.

A 1-2-3 of McLaughlin, Holt, and Stovall can manufacture some early traffic on the basepaths.

Then Aloy can hit into a double play and chase them off.

Far be it from DVH to play small ball.

I’m not sure why anyone is melting over this.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, Tygart hasn’t been someone we can reliably count on much at all this season, and his command issues have gotten worse the last few months.

For Tygart, the delta between his season ERA (3.94) and his SEC-only ERA (5.40) is pretty significant, whereas Molina’s is pretty consistent (4.04 // 4.50).

Tygart also hit an insane number of batters (15), issued the most walks (36), had the most wild pitches (7 — more than double anyone else on staff), had the fewest strikeouts of the rotation (69), and had the highest opposing BA (.200).

People seem to forget that when we made Omaha in 2022, Tygart was basically unusable by the end of the regular season and didn’t see much meaningful action in the postseason. He got absolutely shelled in his limited appearances in Stillwater, and was hot trash in Omaha (faced 2 batters in the 9th against Ole Miss and plunked both of them, then got bailed out by Morris).
