Surprising, yet great to hear. There were a few clips of him making a play or two, but if that's how he held it down all weekend then we're sitting pretty. Never would have guessed it with how he approached the ball like a foreign object when it was hit to him earlier this year.
quote:I said something to this effect in the SEC stats only thread on tRant. We completely flipped strengths once conference play started. The young arms have been absolute dawgs.
We were reliant on offense earlier in the season while pitching and defense were woeful. Conversely, pitching and defense have been pretty good the last two weekends, especially this past weekend against Tennessee.

Hogs are getting some baserunners but keep stranding them.
3-3, bottom of the 7th.
UCA has given up no walks and have hit one batter.

seems a bit weak tonight.
Not sure if it is the opponent, or just a funky night.
Pitching is mediocre....

Eh, it was pretty good until Coil gave up the 3 run homer to tie it.

Hogs are the beneficiaries of some gifts from UCA’s fielding in the 7th. Absolutely crazy inning.
Diggs hits a mile high popup, UCA’s CF loses it in the night sky, and Diggs winds up with a double on what should have been the 2nd out.
Cali then hits a hard grounder that eats up the 3B.
Slavens hits a chopper that makes the second baseman hesitate, think about stepping on 2nd, then throw late to 1st and Slavens is safe. Diggs never hits the brakes rounding 3rd and scores. 4-3 Hogs.
Coll gets hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Polk walks to bring in a run. 5-3 Hogs.
Slavens scores on a passed ball that hits off the umpire’s foot and bounces back into the field. 6-3 Hogs.
Josenberger strikes out to end the inning.
6-3 Hogs to the 8th.

As someone who was clamoring for Jayson Jones to crack the lineup, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed that he’s not made the most of his opportunities.
In his last 4 games he’s 1 for 10 with 4 strikeouts, including 0-2 with 2 K’s last night. His average was in the mid .300s, now it’s down to .257. In that stretch he’s also been pinch hit for twice, though sometimes with pinch hits it’s tough to delineate whether it’s a righty/lefty matchup or due to struggles.
I expect him to progress and be a key piece of next year’s team, but he’s probably solidified himself this season as firmly a midweek player and backup to Cali (who’s broken out of his early season hitting slump and also really started fielding the ball well), as well as a situational right handed PH option along with Coll.

I hope Slavens is getting a useful degree.

He is who is he is at this point.
Slavens in SEC games last year: .216 / .232 / .412
Slavens in SEC games this year: .214 / .311 / .490
I wish he’d develop some better plate discipline and work into advantage counts more, but he’s a first pitch swinger who’s going to work into 0-2 or 1-2 counts far more often than not.
